This study is aimed at estimating the magnitude of direct government payments required for retiring excess cropland under various supply control programs which maximize efficiency of crop production and land use in 1965 for the United States. Costs are estimated for eight simulated farm programs. Six of these farm programs are derived from an interregional linear programming model which minimizes crop production costs for a given level of total output. The remaining two programs are alterations of two programming solutions. After costs for each of the simulated programs are computed, costs for each program are compared with costs of supply ...

CARD Reports

The basic idea of the conference on Structural Changes in Commercial Agriculture was planted in the spring of 1964 by Earl 0. Heady. He outlined for the North Central Farm Management Research Committee his concern about the kind and amount of response to both current and prospective structural changes in the commercial farm firm. Many changes represent adjustments to technological and other innovations originating in marketing, research, and educational agencies serving farmers.

The nation is still in the midst of an unprecedented upward trend in prosperity and economic growth. It has already attained a level of national and per capita income which would have seemed unattainable only three decades ago. But the end is not yet iri sight and American society has defined substantiative future goals accordingly. These are goals in general which suggest opportunity for all individuals and groups to share equitably in participation and gain from this advance. If they are to be attained, these goals also require an appraisal of the nation' s policies in respect to their contribution ...
