Sire Evaluation From Five-Month Daughter Records, L. Dale Van Vleck Jan 1962

Sire Evaluation From Five-Month Daughter Records, L. Dale Van Vleck

Faculty Papers and Publications in Animal Science

The chief advantages of sire evaluation based on five-month daughter records are: 1. Genetic progress is inversely proportional to the turnover rate in testing bulls so that if this interval is shortened by 10%, the rate of genetic progress will be increased by 11%. The turnover period can be shortened with the use of 5-month records from about 50 months to 45 months—a decrease of 10% in time. 2. Genetic progress is also related to how many top bulls are saved and how many poor ones are culled out of all those sampled. In other words, the more bulls ...

Effect Of Levels Of Meat And Bone Scraps On Growth Rate And Feed Efficiency Of Growing-Finishing Swine, E. R. Peo, Jr., D. B. Hudman Jan 1962

Effect Of Levels Of Meat And Bone Scraps On Growth Rate And Feed Efficiency Of Growing-Finishing Swine, E. R. Peo, Jr., D. B. Hudman

Faculty Papers and Publications in Animal Science

Many investigations have shown that soybean meal when properly supplemented can replace meat and bone scraps as a major source of protein in swine rations (Lepley et al., 1950; Terrill et al., 1954; Rohlf, 1954; Meade and Hanson, 1957; Meade et al., 1958; Becker et al., 1960). The importance of this finding is emphasized by the work of Bloss et al. (1953), Terrill et al. (1954), Meade and Teter (1957) and Becker and Jensen (1961) who reported a significant depression in growth rate and feed efficiency of swine fed rations containing relatively high levels of meat and bone scraps.

Studies On Parorchis Acanthus (Trematoda: Digenea) As A Biological Control For The Southern Oyster Drill, Thais Haemastoma, Nelson R. Cooley Jan 1962

Studies On Parorchis Acanthus (Trematoda: Digenea) As A Biological Control For The Southern Oyster Drill, Thais Haemastoma, Nelson R. Cooley

US Fish & Wildlife Publications

Events in the attack on the southern oyster drill, Thais haemastoma, by miracidia of the digenetic trematode, Parorchis acanthus, are described.

Infection rates in wild drill populations of various Gulf Coast localities from Florida to Texas were low, but intensity of infection in individual drills was high and caused castration. Infection rates in laboratory experiments were high, but intensities were low.

Pathology of natural infections in drills is described. The infection lasts at least two years, possibly even for life.

Natural infection rates of juvenile herring gulls (Larus argentatus) , ring-billed gulls (L. delawarensis), and juvenile laughing gulls (L. atricilla) are ...

Oyster Mortality Studies In Virginia: Ill. Epizootiology Of A Disease Caused By Haplosporidium Costale Wood And Andrews, Jay D. Andrews, Johon L. Wood, H. Dickson Hoese

VIMS Articles

A short, sharp eplzootic disease of oysters on Seaside of Eastern Shore, Virginia, has been associated with a new pathogen, Haplosporidium costale Wood and Andrews. Native oysters in trays have shown closely timed May-June losses for three consecutive years. Losses at other seasons were small. May-June losses ranged from 12 to 14 percent in 1959 to 36 to 44 percent in 1960. James River oysters moved to Seaside showed higher losses than natives after a year of acclimation. Oysters in Bayside creeks revealed late summer losses caused by Dermocystidimn marinmn Mackin, Owens, and Collier rather than May-June deaths.

The new ...

Grazing To Control Pasture Composition, R A. Bettenay Jan 1962

Grazing To Control Pasture Composition, R A. Bettenay

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

APART from grazing management, there are a number of means by which the farmer can influence pasture composition.

With the exception of grazing, all of these processes involve recurring costs, so it is important to exert the utmost possible control through the grazing animal.
