The Availability Of Phosphorus In Two Defluorinated Phosphates To Sheep As Determined By A Radioisotope Technique, Carlen Pippin Dec 1962

The Availability Of Phosphorus In Two Defluorinated Phosphates To Sheep As Determined By A Radioisotope Technique, Carlen Pippin

Masters Theses

[From the Introduction]

Phosphorus deficiency has limited livestock production since the beginning of recorded history. This is understandable in view of the essentiality of phosphorus to various life processes and of the problems of providing adequate amounts of available phosphorus in rations for livestock.

One of the best known functions of phosphorus is its importance in building bones and teeth. Also, it has an equally important function in every living cell of the body. It is essential for the utilization and metabolism of the other nutrients such as proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. Muscles cannot grow and divide, and cells cannot ...

Quantitative Study Of Growth Of Some Dairy Psychrophiles, Taher A. El-Farekh

Masters Theses

Summary and Conclusions:

Samples of pasteurized skim milk were steamed for 25 minutes at approximately 100° C. and inoculated with pure cultures of Pseudomonas fluorescens, A and B, at different levels, Pseudomonas fragi, Brevibacterium lipolyticum. The fifth culture was the normal flora of commercially pasteurized skim milk treated as a pure culture. All samples were stored at 4° C. Bacterial growth was determined using agar plates incubated at 25° C. for 3 days.

The generation time was calculated for all cultures which ranged from 5.55 hours for Pseudomonas fragi to 11.24 hours for Brevibacterium lipolyticum. The generation time ...

Group Grain Feeding Versus Individual Grain Feeding Of Lactating Dairy Cows, Earl Max Sudweeks May 1962

Group Grain Feeding Versus Individual Grain Feeding Of Lactating Dairy Cows, Earl Max Sudweeks

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Grain feeding is an important part of a dairy feeding program. Grain supplies energy in a concentrated form and when fed as a supplement to forage permits cows to maintain high levels of production. Also, if the forage is of low quality, additional protein and other nutrients can be supplied with the grain in a concentrate mix. By feeding a balanced concentrate mix, according to individual production, each cow receives the necessary nutrients for production. Dairy cows are usually fed grain individually.

During recent years dairy herds have increased in size and milking parlors have been developed in which to ...

Influence Of Age On Milk Production Of Holstein Cows In Utah, Marvin R. Green May 1962

Influence Of Age On Milk Production Of Holstein Cows In Utah, Marvin R. Green

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Production of dairy cows is influenced by many factors, among which are: genetics, nutrition, management, disease and age. Most of these factors can be modified to maintain a high level of production. Age, however, is beyond the influence of mankind; therefore, it is important to understand the effect of age on milk and butter-fat production.

A Study Of The Use Of The Hydrogen Peroxide-Catalase Treatment Of Milk In The Manufacture Of A Reduced Fat, Cheddar-Like Cheese, Lamar John Johnson May 1962

A Study Of The Use Of The Hydrogen Peroxide-Catalase Treatment Of Milk In The Manufacture Of A Reduced Fat, Cheddar-Like Cheese, Lamar John Johnson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Nutritionists, the medical profession, and the public in general have become increasingly interested in low fat food products. Cheddar cheese, as it is now made, has a high caloric value and therefore may be discriminated against in some diets. The production of a reduced fat cheddar-like cheese would be of importance to the cheese industry by providing a reduced fat, high protein product.

The chemical nature of the casein furnishes the foundation for the body and texture in cheese. The body and texture of typical cheddar cheese is influenced principally by its fat and moisture content.

The use of hydrogen ...

A Study Of The Effects Of Acidity On Shelf Life And Type Of Spoilage In Market Milk, Jagannath M. Kudale

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The addition of the Streptococcus lactis culture in the pasteurized milk was studied, in an attempt to find the effects of the culture in prolonging shelf life of the milk. Various concentrations of the culture were tried to find the optimum concentration that would give favorable effect on keeping quality of the milk. It was found that the addition of Streptococcus lactis culture at the rate of 0.0001 percent has shown promising effects in prolonging shelf life of the milk at the storage temperature of 40 F.

In addition to the above study, effects of added acid in the ...

The study had the following main objectives: 1) determine the level of utilization of the refuge by water fowl hunters including determining the factors which affect the utilization of various areas of the refuge, determining the factors and their influence on the kill composition in the various areas and the entire refuge, and obtaining quantitative and qualitative information on hunter population and the use ...

The Possibility Of The Existence Of Mimicry Between Two Species Of Southern Appalachian Salamanders, Lowell Preston Orr Mar 1962

The Possibility Of The Existence Of Mimicry Between Two Species Of Southern Appalachian Salamanders, Lowell Preston Orr

Doctoral Dissertations

A study was conducted in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to determine the validity of the mimicry hypothesis which has been proposed to explain the resemblance between red-cheeked color variants of Desmognathus ochrophaeus carolinensis and Plethodon jordani jordani, the red-cheeked salamander. Five basic rules of mimicry were tested in both field and laboratory approaches to the problem.

The color patterns of carolinensis were recorded in 587 individuals observed. Of this number, 25.7 per cent displayed some cheek coloration which included color variations of red to orange, yellow, and white. Red to orange cheek colors were found in 92 ...

The Tennessee Beef Performance Testing Program In Robertson County, Craig Watson Mar 1962

The Tennessee Beef Performance Testing Program In Robertson County, Craig Watson

Masters Theses

(From Introduction)

A program for the performance testing of beef cattle in Tennessee was instigated in 1956 by the Extension Animal Husbandry Department and the Animal Husbandry-Veterinary Science Department of The University of Tennessee. In various meetings over the state with the extension personnel, the members of the Robertson County Livestock Association and the Agriculture Extension Agent in Robertson County became interested in this production testing program. Since Robertson County is a growing beef cattle county, performance testing beef herds in the county to determine the rate of gain and the quality of calves that were produced seemed advisable. In ...

A Survey Of The Helminth Parasites Of Pheasants From Brown County, South Dakota, Donald E. Gilbertson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This paper presents a study of the helminth endoparasite of the Chinese or ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus). The digestive and respiratory tracts of 262 pheasants, all of which were collected in Brown County, South Dakota, were examined. Collections were ,made from January, 1961, through November of the same year. The problem was divided as follows: (1) locating and Identifying the helminth parasites, (2) relating parasitism to the age of the birds, (3) ascertaining the seasonal distribution of the parasites, and (4) determining what gross pathological changes were due to parasitism. Previous to this study, little or no literature was available ...
