Seawater was collected and filtered for microbiome and bacterioplankton sequencing and analyses at various depths during two planned DEEPEND cruise expeditions to the GOM. Filters were stored and then processed for total environmental genomic DNA according to standard methods (see earthmicrobiome.org). 16S rRNA amplicon libraries covering the V4 hypervariable region was generated with universal PCR primers and then sequenced on an Illumina MiSeq DNA sequencing platform. Bioinformatics analyses in QIIME and R was used to quality filter and assess microbial community diversity and taxonomic composition. These baseline characterizations track alpha and beta diversity at different depths ranging from 0 ...

Hardbottom Mapping And Community Characterization Of The West-Central Florida Gulf Coast, December 2011 - June 2016, Brian K. Walker, Rene Baumstark, Sean Keenan, Cory Ames

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Datasets

The continental shelf off Florida’s west coast is a mosaic of fish habitats including seagrass beds and carbonate reef outcroppings (hard bottom) classified by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) as Essential Fish Habitat. Habitat maps and community baseline data, however, are nonexistent for a majority of the region. This collaborative effort between Nova Southeastern University, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, NMFS and other scientists will characterize and map continental shelf seagrass and hard bottom habitats in nearshore areas fished by many recreational fishermen. Objectives include: 1) map hard bottom and seagrass beds using various data types including ...

Passive Warming Reduces Stress And Shifts Reproductive Effort In The Antarctic Moss, Polytrichastrum Alpinum, Erin E. Shortlidge, Sarah M. Eppley, Hans Kohler, Todd N. Rosenstiel, Gustavo E. Zúñiga, Angélica Casanova-Katny

Todd N. Rosenstiel

Background and Aims: The Western Antarctic Peninsula is one of the most rapidly warming regions on Earth, and many biotic communities inhabiting this dynamic region are responding to these well-documented climatic shifts. Yet some of the most prevalent organisms of terrestrial Antarctica, the mosses, and their responses to warming have been relatively overlooked and understudied. In this research, the impacts of 6 years of passive warming were investigated using open top chambers (OTCs), on moss communities of Fildes Peninsula, King George Island, Antarctica.

Methods: The effects of experimental passive warming on the morphology, sexual reproductive effort and stress physiology of ...

Frozen Brain Atlas, Natalie Andrea Builes, Dominick Joseph Casciato, Samantha Taylor Bergoine, Robert Speth

Robert Speth

The Frozen Brain Atlas provides students, educators, and scientists with a tool to further explore the architecture of the brain. Current brain atlases allow users to navigate sectioned brain tissue using histological staining; however, they fail to capture naturally visible structures post sectioning. Through immediate post sectioning image collection, the natural contrast of the brain reveals unique structural details that are rarely seen by traditional staining procedures. By utilizing indexing and interactive labeling, the Nova Southeastern University Frozen Brain Atlas will allow identification of brain regions when used as a correlative tool for modalities including receptor autoradiography, immunofluorescence, and other ...

The Effects Of Ethanol On Diverse Components Of Choice In The Rat: Reward Discrimination, Preference And Relative Valuation, Howard C. Cromwell, Justin J. Mcgraw, Luke Zona Jun 2017

The Effects Of Ethanol On Diverse Components Of Choice In The Rat: Reward Discrimination, Preference And Relative Valuation, Howard C. Cromwell, Justin J. Mcgraw, Luke Zona

Howard Casey Cromwell

Alcohol consumption impairs judgment and choice. How alcohol alters these crucial processes is primarily unknown. Choice can be fractionated into different components including reward discrimination, preference and relative valuation that can function together or in isolation depending upon diverse factors including choice context. We examined the diverse components and contextual effects by analyzing the effects of alcohol drinking on choice behavior in a task with a reduced level of temporal and spatial constraints. Rats were trained to drink 10% ethanol during 6 weeks of behavior testing using a combined sucrose-fade and two-bottle free-choice procedure. Two different sucrose pellet outcomes (e ...

Multiple Opening Closing Net Environmental Sensing System (Mocness) Instrument Data For Cruise Dp05 R/V Point Sur In-Situ Deep Seawater And Associated Fauna, May 1-11, 2017, Viosca Knoll Gom, Gray Lawson, Travis Richards

DEEPEND Datasets

The Multiple Opening Closing Net and Environmental Sensing System(s) (MOCNESS) deployed during the DEEPEND field program collects data (e.g., pressure, temperature, conductivity, volume filtered, horizontal and vertical velocity, latitude, and longitude) from several sensors while the instrument is in use. These data help characterize the environment and assess the orientation and speed of the MOCNESS. The flow and net angle can be used to calculate the volume of water filtered for each net. The biological data and ship data collected during this cruise are available in GRIIDC datasets R4.x257.226:0005 and R4.x257.226:0014 respectively.

Repeated Exposure To Methamphetamine Induces Sex-Dependent Hypersensitivity To Ischemic Injury In The Adult Rat Heart, Boyd R. Rorabaugh, Sarah L. Seeley, Thorne S. Stoops, Manoranjan S. D’Souza

Pharmacy Faculty Scholarship

BACKGROUND: We previously reported that adult female, but not male rats that were prenatally exposed to methamphetamine exhibit myocardial hypersensitivity to ischemic injury. However, it is unknown whether hypersensitivity to ischemic injury develops when rats are exposed to methamphetamine during adulthood. The goal of this study was to determine whether methamphetamine exposure during adulthood sensitizes the heart to ischemic injury. METHODS: Adult male and female rats received daily injections of methamphetamine (5 mg/kg) or saline for 10 days. Their hearts were isolated on day 11 and subjected to a 20 min ischemic insult on a Langendorff isolated heart apparatus ...

Soil Type More Than Precipitation Determines Fine-Root Abundance In Savannas Of Kruger National Park, South Africa, Andrew Kulmatiski, Sydney R.C. Sprouse, Karen H. Beard May 2017

Soil Type More Than Precipitation Determines Fine-Root Abundance In Savannas Of Kruger National Park, South Africa, Andrew Kulmatiski, Sydney R.C. Sprouse, Karen H. Beard

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Aims Our aim was to examine how soil type and precipitation affect fine-root abundance in savanna ecosystems across Kruger National Park (KNP), South Africa. Methods Fine-root distributions were measured in four sites that represent the natural factorial combination of soil types (basalt-derived clay or granite-derived sand) and precipitation regimes [wet (~750 mm mean annual precipitation) or dry (~500 mm mean annual precipitation)] that occur in KNP. Root area and biomass (at soil depths of 0–75 cm) were estimated from measurements of root number, length and width in images from minirhizotron tubes at each site. Measurements were made during one ...

DEEPEND Datasets

The deep sea ecosystem is believed to contain the highest biomass of fish in the oceans. However, the taxonomic diversity in this ecosystem is incompletely described and likely to be vastly underestimated. DNA sequence data (barcodes) have become a key tool to discover hidden biodiversity. We generated mitochondrial DNA barcode datasets based on the Cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) gene from deep sea fishes. These data were analyzed using phylogenetic and statistical methods to reveal cryptic species and make taxonomic linkages between adult fishes and their early life stages. These datasets were generated from fishes collected in the Northern Gulf ...

Susceptibility Of Chlamydia Trachomatis To The Excipient Hydroxy-Ethylcellulose: Ph And Concentration Dependence Of Antimicrobial Activity, Ali A. Abdul-Sater, David M. Ojcius, M. P. Meyer Apr 2017

Susceptibility Of Chlamydia Trachomatis To The Excipient Hydroxy-Ethylcellulose: Ph And Concentration Dependence Of Antimicrobial Activity, Ali A. Abdul-Sater, David M. Ojcius, M. P. Meyer

David M. Ojcius

Hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) is used as a neutral excipient in microbicides used against sexually transmitted pathogens. However, HEC inhibits the infection of cervical epithelial cells by Chlamydia trachomatis at pH 5 in a concentration-dependent manner. At pH 7, infection is inversely dependent on the concentration of HEC, possibly due to pH-dependent calcium sequestration.

Chlorophyll Concentration And Optical Absorption Spectra Of Particulate And Dissolved Material, Collected At Several Depths On Deepend Cruises Dp03 And Dp04 From January-December 2016, Chuanmin Hu, Jenifer Cannizzaro, David English Mar 2017

Chlorophyll Concentration And Optical Absorption Spectra Of Particulate And Dissolved Material, Collected At Several Depths On Deepend Cruises Dp03 And Dp04 From January-December 2016, Chuanmin Hu, Jenifer Cannizzaro, David English

DEEPEND Datasets

The optical absorption spectra from seawater’s particulate and dissolved components can be used to compute the penetration of light to various depths, estimate the proportion of living to non-living particulate matter, assess photosynthetic light availability and the type of phytoplankton present, and the validate of satellite or airborne ocean color measurements. Chlorophyll and phaeopigment concentrations are often used to estimate the amount of phytoplankton present, and to allow extrapolation of in situ fluorometric measurements. Water was collected using a CTD rosette near the surface and from several depths at each sampling station occupied by the DEEPEND cruises DP03 & DP04 (see GRIIDC dataset R4.x257.226:0012 and R4.x257.226:0013). A variable amount (l) of this water was filtered through glass-fiber filter pads. The filter pads were stored for subsequent analysis. Some of the filtrate was passed through an additional nylon membrane (0.2 µm) filter, and also retained for shore based analysis. Optical absorption of the particulate material on the filter pads was determined on shore, using the quantitative filter technique (Yentsch, 1962; Kiefer ...

The Need For Better Measurement And Employee Engagement To Advance A Circular Economy: Lessons From Biogen Zero Waste Journey, Vesela R. Veleva, Gavin Bodkin, Svetlana Todorova

Vesela Veleva

The movement toward “zero waste” and circular economy has recently gained traction as an alternative to the dominant “take-make-waste” model of production and as a viable approach for addressing climate change. Business plays a key role in this transition and a growing number of companies are establishing waste reduction goals, such as “zero waste to landfill” as part of their sustainability commitments. This study however, suggests that companies’ efforts presently are inadequate to support such a transition; companies lack effective sustainability indicators to measure progress, identify opportunities, and engage employees. While the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines provide standardized indicators ...
