Breeding Origins Of Northern Shovelers (Anas Clypeata) Wintering On The Great Salt Lake, Utah, Anthony J. Roberts, Michael R. Conover Sep 2014

Breeding Origins Of Northern Shovelers (Anas Clypeata) Wintering On The Great Salt Lake, Utah, Anthony J. Roberts, Michael R. Conover

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

The breeding origin and migratory connectivity of wintering birds are important to address how population changes on wintering areas are impacted by changes elsewhere in the birds’ annual cycle. In addition, identifying important point sources of nutrients used throughout the annual cycle can assist managers in identifying sources of toxins or pathogens. We used stable hydrogen isotope ratios to identify breeding locations of Northern Shovelers (Anas clypeata; henceforth shoveler) wintering at the Great Salt Lake (GSL), Utah. Stable-isotope likelihood-based assignment placed the largest number of shovelers collected during winter on the GSL as breeding in the western US and southern ...

Diet And Body Mass Of Ducks In The Presence Of Commercial Harvest Of Brine Shrimp Cysts In The Great Salt Lake, Utah, Anthony J. Roberts, Michael R. Conover Aug 2014

Diet And Body Mass Of Ducks In The Presence Of Commercial Harvest Of Brine Shrimp Cysts In The Great Salt Lake, Utah, Anthony J. Roberts, Michael R. Conover

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Commercial fisheries and waterbirds are often in competition for available resources and may affect each other through limiting available forage for birds or reducing harvest for commercial fisheries. Relatively little is known regarding the wintering population of waterfowl on the hypersaline Great Salt Lake (GSL), Utah, but mid-winter counts indicate waterfowl use the GSL during winter coinciding with a commercial harvest of brine shrimp (Artemia franciscana) cysts (i.e., eggs). We surveyed previously unmonitored pelagic regions of GSL to estimate total wintering populations of waterfowl and collected northern shoveler (Anas clypeata) and green-winged teal (Anas crecca) during 3 nonbreeding seasons ...

Role Of Benthic Substrate In Waterfowl Distribution On Great Salt Lake, Anthony J. Roberts, Michael R. Conover Jun 2014

Role Of Benthic Substrate In Waterfowl Distribution On Great Salt Lake, Anthony J. Roberts, Michael R. Conover

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Benthic substrate has a large impact on aquatic plant and invertebrate assemblages and likely directly or indirectly influences waterbird distributions. The association of birds with various substrates can be important in survey design or habitat management. Northern Shoveler (Anas clypeata), Common Goldeneye (Bucephala clangula), Eared Grebe (Podiceps nigricollis), Ring-billed Gull (Larus delawarensis) and California Gull (L. californicus) densities on the hypersaline Great Salt Lake, Utah, were estimated to determine the association of bird distributions with benthic substrates. Three of the four groups of species monitored had densities that varied by benthic substrate; gulls were the exception. Eared Grebes occurred at ...

A Partnership Approach To Protecting And Improving Water Quality In The Shellfish Watersheds Of Pierce County, Cindy Callahan, Erin Ewald, Barbara Ann Smolko, Ray Hanowell

Salish Sea Ecosystem Conference

Commercial shellfish growing is a significant economic driver on the Key Peninsula of Pierce County, Washington. In response to the downgrades of several shellfish areas in the 1990’s and early 2000’s and the establishment of Shellfish Protection Districts and Closure Response Plans, it was recognized that a more proactive approach was needed. In an effort to build cooperation and a partnership across Pierce County, and address bacterial contamination in the shellfish growing areas, a Pierce County Shellfish Partners Strategic Plan was developed and formalized in March of 2013. The partnership initially included Pierce County Surface Water Management (SWM ...

Increasing numbers of fat cells in adipose tissue are attributed to proliferation of preadipocytes or immature adipocytes in the early stages as well as adipogenic differentiation in the later stages of adipogenesis. Although both events are involved in the increase in fat cell numbers, they are contrary to each other in that the former requires cell cycle activity whereas the latter requires cell cycle withdrawal. Therefore, appropriate regulation of cell cycle inhibition is critical to adipogenesis.
To explore the important cell cycle inhibitors and study their expression in adipogenesis, a strategy was adopted that combined the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO ...

P-19 Hcnabc Operon Transcription Of Pseudomonas Putida Under Varying Iron And Oxygen Concentrations And Culture Age, Christine Lee

Honors Scholars & Undergraduate Research Poster Symposium Programs

The species Pseudomonas putida produces hydrogen cyanide (HCN) through the transcription of the hcnABC operon. The purpose of this experiment is to determine how the hcnABC operon is affected by varying levels of iron and oxygen, and age of bacteria culture. To test this, P. putida is grown under five conditions: the presence of iron, the absence of iron, with aeration, without aeration, and without iron and aeration. At 8, 18, and 30 hours, the cultures are assessed for HCN production and cell density. HCN production is measured via bioluminescence; light emission occurs whenever HCN is produced because the modified ...

Greater Sage-Grouse (Centrocercus Urophasianus) Hen Survival: Effects Of Raptors, Anthropogenic And Landscape Features, And Hen Behavior, Jonathan B. Dinkins, Michael R. Conover, Christopher P. Kirol, Jeffrey L. Beck, S. Nicole Frey

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Survival of breeding-age hens has been identified as the demographic rate with the greatest potential to influence population growth of Greater Sage-Grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus (Bonaparte, 1827); hereafter “Sage-Grouse”). During 2008–2011, we collected summer survival data from 427 Sage-Grouse hens in southern Wyoming, USA. We assessed the effects of raptor densities, anthropogenic features, landscape features, and Sage-Grouse hen behavior on Sage-Grouse hen survival. Survival of Sage-Grouse hens was positively associated with the proportion of big sagebrush (genus Artemisia L.) habitat within 0.27 km radius and road density and negatively associated with power-line density, proximity to forested habitat, and topographic ...

Communication About Attention Deficit Disorder During Pediatric Asthma Visits, Betsy Sleath, Sandra H. Sulzer, Delesha M. Carpenter, Catherine Slota, Christopher Gillette, Stephanie Davis

Kinesiology and Health Science Faculty Publications

The objectives of the study were to examine provider-family communication about attention deficit disorder during pediatric asthma visits. Children with asthma, aged 8 through 16 and their parents were recruited at five pediatric practices. All medical visits were audio-taped. There were 296 asthmatic children enrolled into the study and 67 of them also had attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). ADHD communication elements suggested by national guidelines were discussed infrequently. Providers were more likely to discuss, educate, and ask one or more questions about ADHD medications if the visit was non-asthma related. Providers included child input into the ADHD treatment regimen ...

We analyzed the CD4+ T-lymphocyte responses to dengue, West Nile, and yellow fever viruses 4 months after immunization of a volunteer with an experimental live-attenuated dengue virus type 1 vaccine (DEN-1 45AZ5). We examined bulk culture proliferation to noninfectious antigens, determined the precursor frequency of specific CD4+ T cells by limiting dilution, and established and analyzed CD4+ T-cell clones. Bulk culture proliferation was predominantly dengue virus type 1 specific with a lesser degree of cross-reactive responses to other dengue virus serotypes, West Nile virus, and yellow fever virus. Precursor frequency determination by limiting dilution in the presence of noninfectious dengue ...
