Vector Competence Of Aedes Sierrensis And Culex Pipiens Complex (Diptera: Culicidae) For Dirofilaria Immitis (Spirurida: Onchocercidae) In Northern California, Jeffrey Allan Kurosaka Jan 2017

Vector Competence Of Aedes Sierrensis And Culex Pipiens Complex (Diptera: Culicidae) For Dirofilaria Immitis (Spirurida: Onchocercidae) In Northern California, Jeffrey Allan Kurosaka

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Dirofilaria immitis Leidy (dog heartworm) is a life-threatening parasite transmitted by mosquitoes to domestic dogs. Endemic in the eastern United States, cases have become more prevalent over the last few decades. While prevalence in California is generally low, Lake and San Joaquin Counties have reported rates comparable to the East Coast at 3.73% and 0.71%(CAPC 2017), respectively. Aedes sierrensis is thought to be responsible for transmission in California, but in some cases, it exists in inadequate quantities and temporal ranges to explain parasite activity. Based on Huang et al. (2013) and Tran (2016), bloodfeeding patterns, and other ...

The Biology Of Karyolysus Dilloni N. Sp. From Rana Aurora Draytoni : A Thesis ..., Wayne Aldo Sorsoli Jan 1961

The Biology Of Karyolysus Dilloni N. Sp. From Rana Aurora Draytoni : A Thesis ..., Wayne Aldo Sorsoli

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

While investigating various Amphibia of Central California for blood inhabiting parasites, the writer found a parasite in the blood of the Rod-legged Frog (Rana aurora draytoni) which exhibited the characteristics of Karyolysus, yet was different from any described; this same parasite had been previously observed by Dr. D. L. Lerhmann, Associate Professor of Zoology, University of the Pacific. In order to increase the knowledge of this form, further investigations were undertaken.

The first step was to determine the life cycle in the vertebrate host and, if possible, to find the invertebrate host and to elaborate the developmental stages in the ...

Observations On The Biology Of Schistocerca Venusta, David Allyn King Jan 1960

Observations On The Biology Of Schistocerca Venusta, David Allyn King

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Statement Qf the problem. The green valley grasshopper, Schistoceroa venusta Scudder, is one of the most common grasshoppers to be found in the San Joaquin Valley and environs. Despite the fact that the insect is commonplace, very little work has been done on its biology. It was the purpose of this study, therefore, to learn by field and laboratory observations of the life cycle and habits of Schistoceroa venusta.

Spermatogenesis In The Sand Crab Emerita Analoga : A Thesis ..., Mario Martin Menesini Jan 1954

Spermatogenesis In The Sand Crab Emerita Analoga : A Thesis ..., Mario Martin Menesini

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Crustacean spermatozoa are among the most peculiarly modified germ cells in the animal kingdom. Many of their striking cytological specializations may be observed in the sperm cells or Emerita analoga, the so-called sand crab. This animal has been used by the writer for studies on spermatogenesis and on spermatozoan behavior during the summer or 1951, 1952, and 1953 at the Pacific Marine Station.

Plankton Studies Of The Tomales Bay, California : A Thesis ..., Andrew William Mcclain Jan 1954

Plankton Studies Of The Tomales Bay, California : A Thesis ..., Andrew William Mcclain

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

These studies on the plankton of Tomales Bay were designed to determine the effects of such physical factors as tides, temperatures, salinities and sunshine on the quantities of various types of organisms, and to obtain a more comprehensive picture of estuarine life at the Pacific Marine Station. The studies were begun in the summer of 1948 and continued through the summer of 1953.

Although various studies have been conducted on different aspects of marine plankton, the only general treatments of the subject of which the writer is aware are those of Johnstone (1924), Ricketts and Calvin (1951), Sproaton (1949) and ...

Trypanosoma Barbari, A New Species From The Newt Triturus Torosus, Donald Lewis Lehmann Jan 1950

Trypanosoma Barbari, A New Species From The Newt Triturus Torosus, Donald Lewis Lehmann

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Whlle making studies of the parasites of fishes and amphibians at the Pacific Marine Station, Dillon Beach, California, during August, 1949, the writer encountered a hitherto unreported trypanasome from a female Triturus torosua. From the information obtained from the one smear, which was stained, the animal was presumed to be monomorphic, However, during February, 1950, a search was made expressly for the purpose of' obtaining specimens of this Pacific Coast newt, and of the eight animals examined six were parasitized. Contrary to the primary observations, evidence was accumulated which proved beyond any doubt that the flagellate is polymorphic and that ...

A Survey Of The Adult Trematodes From Fishes Of The Pacific Marine Station Area, William Franklin Johnson Jan 1949

A Survey Of The Adult Trematodes From Fishes Of The Pacific Marine Station Area, William Franklin Johnson

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

An effort is here made to assemble all of our knowledge of all adult trematodes which have been found in the fishes of the Pacific Marine Station Area. This includes publications, unpublished material such as graduate theses, and specimens herein described for the first time. It is hoped that this endeavor will facilitate further investigation in trematodology and that this paper will be an aid in identification of trematodes subsequently discovered.

A Study Of The Littoral Marine Isopod Crustacea Of The Dillon Beach Area : A Thesis ..., Robert James Menzies Jan 1948

A Study Of The Littoral Marine Isopod Crustacea Of The Dillon Beach Area : A Thesis ..., Robert James Menzies

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The primary purpose of this study was to provide accurate diagnoses of the littoral marine isopod crustacea in the Dillon Beach area. Such a purpose involved a much more complete study of the anatomy of the species represented in the fauna than was heretofore performed. Certain anatomical structures deemed by earlier writers as specifically diagnostic are demonstrated to be unreliable and in a great many instances other structures previously neither described or figured by American writers are considered of paramount importance in species identification. The number and magnitude of the changes proposed in this paper as illustrated in outline form ...
