Impact Of Chain Architecture On The Thickness Dependence Of Physical Aging Rate Of Thin Polystyrene Films, Gregory Brown, Elizabeth Lewis, Bryan D. Vogt Jan 2020

Impact Of Chain Architecture On The Thickness Dependence Of Physical Aging Rate Of Thin Polystyrene Films, Gregory Brown, Elizabeth Lewis, Bryan D. Vogt

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The dynamics of polymer thin films have been demonstrated to be significantly altered from the bulk, but the origins of such differences are not well defined. In this work, we seek to understand the differences in the structural dynamics (or physical aging) of polystyrene (PS) through branching and other well defined architectures (comb and centipede). The aging dynamics of ultrathin films (< 30 nm) differ from relatively thick films (100-150nm) with linear PS thin films aging more rapidly than the relatively “bulk-like” thick films. Ellipsometric measurements are used to characterize the physical aging rate of the films. The change in film thickness and refractive index as the films are held below the glass transition temperature (Tg) provides a simple measure of the physical aging. In this study, four different architectures (linear, comb, 4 arm star, and centipede) will be investigated. For each PS architecture, the aging rate will be determined for film thickness ranging ...

Prevention Of Harmful Algal Blooms By The Mitigation Of Phosphorus Nutrient Loading Via Filtration By Steel Wool And Activated Carbon, Samantha Zidd, Sara Kidd, Ronald Simpson Jan 2020

Prevention Of Harmful Algal Blooms By The Mitigation Of Phosphorus Nutrient Loading Via Filtration By Steel Wool And Activated Carbon, Samantha Zidd, Sara Kidd, Ronald Simpson

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) are a devastating ecological and economic consequence of the abundance of nutrient-rich agricultural runoff entering aquatic ecosystems (Baker et al. 2014). Bioavailable phosphorus from synthetic fertilizers is one of the major nutrients contributing to this global issue. Preliminary studies indicate that dissolved phosphorus can be removed from an aqueous environment when passed through a composite mixture of granular steel wool particles and activated carbon (Erickson, Gulliver, and Weiss (2007). Further research was conducted using higher quality concentration measurements to determine what grades of steel wool (0000, 000, 00) and types of activated carbon (GAC, PAC, EAC ...

Where We Are With Enterprise Architecture, Leila Halawi, Richard Mccarthy, James Farah Dec 2019

Where We Are With Enterprise Architecture, Leila Halawi, Richard Mccarthy, James Farah

Publications

Enterprise architecture has been continuously developing since the mid-1980s. Although there is now 35 years of research and use, there is still a lack consistent definitions and standards. This is apparent in the proliferation of so many different enterprise architecture frameworks. Despite the significant body of research, there is a need for standardization of terminology based upon a meta-analysis of the literature. Enterprise architecture programs require commitment throughout an organization to be effective and must be perceived to add value. This research offers an initial basis for researchers who need to expand and continue this research topic with an actual ...

Isentropic Efficiency And Theoretical Analysis Of The Planetary Rotor Expander, Joseph L. James Aug 2019

Isentropic Efficiency And Theoretical Analysis Of The Planetary Rotor Expander, Joseph L. James

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Expanders allow pressurized fluids to undergo a pressure decrease in a controlled environment via volumetric growth to extract fluid energy. There are many types of expanders, and the objective of this thesis is to model the efficiencies of the planetary rotor expander (PRE), a century-old design undeveloped due to insufficient manufacturing capabilities (until recently). Geometric relationships are derived and mathematical models are generated to determine the efficiency of the PRE as a function of design variables. Two industrially relevant case studies show that, to maximize isentropic efficiency, the planetary rotor expander (PRE) rotational frequency is maximized and rotor geometry optimized.

Variable Friction Cladding Connection For Seismic Mitigation, Yongqiang Gong, Liang Cao, Simon Laflamme, James Ricles, Spencer Quiel, Douglas Taylor

Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering Publications

Cladding systems are conventionally designed to serve an architectural purpose and provide environmental protection for building occupants. Recent research has been conducted to enhance structural resiliency by leveraging cladding systems against man-made and natural hazards. The vast majority of the work includes the use of sacrificial cladding panels and energy dissipating connectors. These passive protection systems, though effective, have typically targeted a single hazard one-at-a-time because of their limited frequency bandwidths. A novel semi-active friction connection has been previously proposed by the authors to leverage the cladding motion for mitigating blast and wind hazards. This semi-active friction device, termed variable ...

Ethanol To Ethyl Acetate, Kerri Heuser, Vinson Liao, Neha Narain May 2019

Ethanol To Ethyl Acetate, Kerri Heuser, Vinson Liao, Neha Narain

Senior Design Reports (CBE)

Ethyl acetate is a specialty chemical with dominant use as a solvent, and total production exceeding 3.7MMT annually in 2017. Current production methods mainly utilize petrochemical-derived feedstocks of ethanol and acetic acid that undergo Fischer Esterification to produce ethyl acetate. This is traditionally considered to be an unsustainable process. A new startup company, Greenyug, based out of Santa Barbara, CA, has proposed a new design that solely utilizes fermentation ethanol, and, as a result, is considered sustainable. Greenyug describes (in accordance to US Patents US8562921B2, US9079851B2, and US9447018B2) a two-step reaction pathway that first partially dehydrogenates ethanol to acetaldehyde ...
