Are Teacher Education Programs Failing The Nation’S Urban Schools? A Closer Look At Pre-Service Teachers’ Beliefs About Working With Inner-City Students, Servet Celik Oct 2012

Are Teacher Education Programs Failing The Nation’S Urban Schools? A Closer Look At Pre-Service Teachers’ Beliefs About Working With Inner-City Students, Servet Celik

Servet Celik

To address the issue of pre-service teachers being under-prepared for work in multicultural and impoverished environments in America’s urban schools, teacher education programs have taken steps to improve diversity-oriented curricula and provide relevant fieldwork experience. However, research indicates that a large proportion of teacher candidates still do not have the necessary skills to deal with students from divergent upbringings. This interpretive study investigated the beliefs of pre-service teachers about urban students and how well their teacher education programs are addressing the issues of working in inner-city schools. The results revealed that, although some progress has been made, a significant ...

Evolving more than thirty years ago, the Diagnosis Related Groups (DRGs) covers a wide variety of applications that impact all health care segments throughout the United States. The DRGs are a patient classification scheme originally developed as a means of relating the type of patients a hospital treats (i.e., casemix) to the costs incurred by the hospitals.

The DRG terminology has experienced evolutionary growth through later generations: Major Comorbidities and Complications (MCC), Comorbidities and Complications (CC) and All Patient Refined Diagnosis Related Groups (APR DRG). This process directly impacts the reimbursement or payment re-distribution by Medicare and Medicaid.

Designing Professional Development For Better Pedagogy: A Higher Education Experience In Pakistan, Imran Anjum Chaudary, Shahida Imran

Imran Anjum Chaudary

The mission of the Designing Professional Development for Better Pedagogy is to make a contribution to the understanding of Pakistani professional development in tertiary and higher education sectors. The inspiration for this book came from a research project on teacher development conducted by us in 2009 at the Melbourne Graduate school of Education, the University of Melbourne, Australia. This ethnographic case study, conducted in 2011, not only refreshes the results of our previous research, but also moves the debate forward by analysing the problems and practices of Pakistani professional development, cataloguing the voices of tertiary/higher education teachers, introducing a ...

The Impact Of Analyzing Correct Versus Incorrect Student Work Samples On Students’ Mathematical Proficiency, Lauren Jeneva Moseley Apr 2012

The Impact Of Analyzing Correct Versus Incorrect Student Work Samples On Students’ Mathematical Proficiency, Lauren Jeneva Moseley

Lauren Jeneva Moseley

The purpose of this study is to determine if any gains in mathematical understanding differ if calculus learners analyze correct or incorrect student work samples and to investigate students’ perceptions of the effect of analyzing student work samples on their understanding of mathematical concepts. Calculus students will be assigned to two groups: one group analyzing correct student work samples and one group analyzing incorrect student work samples. What difference, if any, exists between groups in determining correct solutions to problems similar to the work samples analyzed? What difference, if any, exists between groups in whether they replicate errors similar to ...

The Arabic Language: A Sociolinguistic Study, Ahlam Alfouaim

Ahlam Alfouaim

It is very true that bilingualism boosts ones’ cognitive skills and increases ones’ executive system. A bilingual brain has the privileges to process languages and, sometimes, code switch unconsciously. Many bilingual speakers including ESL learners focus only on understanding and analyzing the target language, leaving behind understanding and embracing their own native language. The need to make a conscious sense of how we speak our native language, how others speak it, and how it is different or similar to other language varieties, is somehow misinterpreted. In other word, understanding ones’ mother tongue is vital for the progress of acquiring a ...

The Critical Language Awareness Impact On Language Variation, Ahlam Alfouaim

Ahlam Alfouaim

The ideology of Critical Language Awareness is an integral part of any successful language education system. This area of specialization has played an important role in the development of sociolinguistics study. CLA expands substantially over a wide range of factors including language acquisition and variety, as well as human identity factors. Before diving into critical language awareness studies and its wide practices, the definition of CLA, according to Fiarcough, includes “how language conventions and language practices are invested with power relations and ideological process which people are often unaware of” (205). That is, language is not only a mean of ...

Assessing Nets-T Performance In Teacher Candidates: Exploring The Wayfind Teacher Assessment, Savilla I. Banister

Savilla I Banister

To effectively integrate digital technologies in K–12 schools, teachers must be provided with undergraduate experiences that strongly support these integration resources and strategies. The National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers (NETS•T) provide a framework for teacher candidates and inservice teachers to identify their accomplishments in this realm. Using the NETS•T to deliver undergraduate teacher education curriculum, and requiring teacher candidates to document their abilities related to the NETS•T can support meaningful development for the candidates. This study examines the use of the Wayfind Teacher Assessment as a tool for determining the proficiencies of teacher candidates in ...

Humane Literacy And Formal Educators, Stephanie Itle-Clark Dec 2011

Humane Literacy And Formal Educators, Stephanie Itle-Clark

Stephanie Itle-Clark, Ed.D., CHES

Formal educators (those with formal education degrees versus informal educators who may work in shelters or nature centers) in the K-12 system are tasked with facilitating academic, character, and social and emotional learning in the classroom. As part of this learning, the teaching of critical thinking revolving around and reinforcement of “kindness . . . care and compassion towards” people, animals, and the environment and the interconnection among the three can work to prevent needless suffering and create community building attitudes (Selby, 1995, p. 7). Based upon knowledge of state mandates involving humane education, the Humane Literacy Coalition (HLC) was formed to study ...
