A Cross-Cultural Study Of Housing Adjustment Among Korean, Mexican, And American Households , Sehwa Yang Khil Jan 1991

A Cross-Cultural Study Of Housing Adjustment Among Korean, Mexican, And American Households , Sehwa Yang Khil

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation was to compare the housing adjustment propensities of Korean, Mexican, and American households. The theoretical framework was the Morris and Winter model of housing adjustment. Every household in every culture was assumed to perform a sequence of housing adjustment behaviors to attain desired housing. The purposes had been accomplished through an analysis of three data sets from different sources. Path analysis was employed for testing the empirical model, and the same procedures were performed individually with the three sets of data. There seemed to be some similarities in adjustment patterns between the Mexican and the ...

Single-Family Home Ownership Preferences In The Nonmetropolitan North-Central Region , Mary Ann Sward Jan 1991

Single-Family Home Ownership Preferences In The Nonmetropolitan North-Central Region , Mary Ann Sward

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the differences in stated housing preferences and norms among farm, rural-nonfarm, and small-town households with some assurance that the differences, if any, are not produced by systematic measurement error. The theoretical basis of the research is the housing adjustment model (Morris and Winter, 1978) but the specific form of the analysis is different because the purpose is focused on measurement. The housing adjustment model is based on the idea that norms and preferences influence housing behavior and thereby housing conditions. The measurement-error model, in contrast, is based on the idea that apparent ...

Becoming A First-Time Home Owner: An Analysis Of Household Life History Data , Jaesoon Cho Kim Jan 1987

Becoming A First-Time Home Owner: An Analysis Of Household Life History Data , Jaesoon Cho Kim

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation was to examine the determinants of becoming a first-time home owner through an analysis of event history data. The data, originally in the form of family and residential histories since household formation, were transformed into a yearly longitudinal form of record for each household's life and referred as marriage-year segments. The households who started with rental tenure were selected up to the first-time move to an owned dwelling or up to the time of the interview. Logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the data. The Morris and Winter housing adjustment theory was used ...

A Model Of Household Housing Adjustment: Confronting Analytical Issues , Marilyn M. Eichner Jan 1986

A Model Of Household Housing Adjustment: Confronting Analytical Issues , Marilyn M. Eichner

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A causal model of household housing adjustment is tested. The variables of interest are propensity to move, housing satisfaction, neighborhood satisfaction, housing deficits, and household characteristics. Ordinary least squares regression is used to test the model. The analytical techniques include scaling and recoding to improve the distributions of the variables. It was found that levels of propensity to move are highest for households with the lowest levels of housing satisfaction. Neighborhood satisfaction is not a determinant of propensity to move. Households that are most satisfied with their housing have high neighborhood satisfaction and few housing deficits. Curvilinear relationships are found ...

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the effect of change in economic condition on families in their middle years in the nine-state North Central Region of the United States during 1979-1982. The relationships between economic changes, reported income adequacy, symptoms of stress, and economizing behavior are studied. The Impact Of Wife's Employment On The Acquisition Of Home Ownership And The Accumulation Of Home Equity , Sharon M. Danes Jan 1986

The Impact Of Wife's Employment On The Acquisition Of Home Ownership And The Accumulation Of Home Equity , Sharon M. Danes

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The data for this study come from a longitudinal survey, the Panel Study of Income Dynamics. The subsample used in this study includes husband-wife families that remained intact and had the same household head from 1979 to 1983. Four models are tested. If the wife's average hourly earnings are high, there is a high probability that the family will own a house, have high home equity levels, and have a large increase in home equity levels between 1979 and 1983. The family's stage of the life cycle is a strong indicator of whether a family changes from nonowner ...

Household Production Of Food, Food Expenditures And Reported Adequacy Of Food , Carol Bennett Volker Jan 1985

Household Production Of Food, Food Expenditures And Reported Adequacy Of Food , Carol Bennett Volker

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This study examines relationships between household food production activities and (1) household expenditures for food, and (2) the household's assessment of the adequacy of their food. The source of the data is the 1977-1978 USDA Household Food Consumption Survey, which includes 14,930 households in the 48 conterminous states; Two different measures of household food production are used. The first, primary food production, is the number of activities engaged in that produced goods that could later be used in meal preparation and consumption. These activities include growing various fruits and vegetables, catching fish, and preserving various foods. The second ...
