The Effect Of Dietary Sulfur On The Metabolism Of Long Chain Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids, Mei Fung Chen Aug 1988

The Effect Of Dietary Sulfur On The Metabolism Of Long Chain Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids, Mei Fung Chen

Doctoral Dissertations

The test hypothesis of this investigation was that methionine-supplemented diets could possibly interfere with the metabolism of polyunsaturated fatty acids, thereby altering the biosynthesis of the active metabolites, prostanoids, and the profiles of tissue phospholipids. The postulated mechanism of action for this dietary regimen would be to increase the tissue concentration of the active methyl donor, S-Adenosyl-methionine (SAM) which is also called an activated methionine. SAM is a potent inhibitor of the cycloaxygenase enzyme which is important for the synthesis of biologically active prostanoids.

The results demonstrated that liver microsomes from rats fed the methionine-supplemented diet had a statistically significant ...

A Relationship Between Vitamin B12, Folate, Ascorbic Acid, And Mercury Metabolism, Nancy Elizabeth Zorn Aug 1988

A Relationship Between Vitamin B12, Folate, Ascorbic Acid, And Mercury Metabolism, Nancy Elizabeth Zorn

Masters Theses

The effect of megadoses of vitamin B12, folate, and vitamin C on the in vivo methylation of mercuric chloride was studied in guinea pigs. The incorporation of high levels of vitamin B12, folate, and vitamin C resulted in a decrease in both inorganic mercury and methylmercury concentrations in all tissues except the lung and heart compared to controls. However, percent methylmercury levels tended to increase with vitamin treatments.

The addition of megadoses of vitamin B12 fed either singularly or in combination with the other vitamins resulted in increased methylmercury concentrations in the liver, spleen, and kidney tissues ...

Earth Sheltered Housing In Warren County, Kentucky: Description Of Housing Units & Determinants Of Residents' Satisfaction, Peggy Wallace May 1988

Earth Sheltered Housing In Warren County, Kentucky: Description Of Housing Units & Determinants Of Residents' Satisfaction, Peggy Wallace

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The known population of earth sheltered houses in Warren County, Kentucky were studied (a) to document building materials and techniques utilized, (b) to describe the residents demographically and document their attitudes regarding satisfaction with earth sheltered housing, and (c) to determine reasons for building and resources utilized in financing and planning, as well as problems encountered in regard to the earth sheltered house.

Data on 21 housing units were collected through personal interviews. Data analysis was accomplished using contingency tables, chi-squares, Pearson's product-moment correlation, and multiple stepwise regression.

The earth sheltered house found to provide residents with high satisfaction ...

Maternal Behavior And Child Competence , Janet Nieuwsma Melby Jan 1988

Maternal Behavior And Child Competence , Janet Nieuwsma Melby

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Changes in maternal behavior associated with changes in the age of the child; relationships among maternal behavior, child competence, and family social status; and prediction of child competence using objective and subjective assessments of mothers and children were the focus of the longitudinal research. Fifty-two mothers and their first-born children were assessed when the children were 3, and 4 years old. Forty-eight of the dyads also were assessed when the children were 5 years old. Maternal affective and directive behaviors occurring in a video-recorded mother-child problem-solving situation at assessment Yrs 1 and 2 were observed using the Parent-Child Interaction Code ...

Financial Management Competencies Of Money Managers: Bases For Household Net Worth And Satisfaction , Patricia Mahoney Titus Jan 1988

Financial Management Competencies Of Money Managers: Bases For Household Net Worth And Satisfaction , Patricia Mahoney Titus

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This study was designed to examine the relationships between the financial management competencies of household money managers and the financial well-being of the household. Money managers in 123 households in central Iowa were interviewed during fall 1986. The interview schedule had questions related to financial management knowledge, planning and implementing practices, satisfaction with the household's financial situation, net income, assets and liabilities. A path analysis model of a systems approach to family resource management was tested. Further, analyses of covariance were computed to determine the effect of knowledge on money manager's behaviors and outputs; The typical household money ...

An Analysis Of The Impacts Of Household Size And Composition On Food Expenditure In Haiti , Deepa Majumdar Jan 1988

An Analysis Of The Impacts Of Household Size And Composition On Food Expenditure In Haiti , Deepa Majumdar

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

In this study, the problem of malnutrition in Haiti is examined from a food expenditure perspective. Using data from the Haiti household consumer expenditure survey, first a tabular analysis is done to describe the food expenditure patterns. Then, the effects of household size and composition, and total expenditure on food expenditures are examined by estimating Engel relationships. Household composition is introduced in the general and specific scales, and household size effects models. Income elasticities and weights for six age-sex categories are calculated from the parameter estimates. The empirical findings are used to describe the impacts of household size and composition ...
