Modulation Of Drug Metabolism By Food Restiction, Paul Kupen Su Nov 1985

Modulation Of Drug Metabolism By Food Restiction, Paul Kupen Su

Doctoral Dissertations

The effects of the level and duration of feed restriction on the in vitro activities of hepatic drug metabolizing enzyme system were examined in male weanling Sprague Dawley rats fed ad libitum or feed restricted at 15%, 30% and 45% for a period of one to five weeks (Experiment I). Increasing levels and duration of feed restriction resulted in significant progressive increases in hepatic microsomal protein, cytochrome P-450 content and the in vitro activities of microsomal aniline hydroxylase. p-chloro-methly-aniline(PCMA)N- demethylase and p-nitrophenol UDP-glucuronyl transferase activities were unaltered by the feed restriction while cytochrome c reductase activity was significantly ...

How To Compare Fuel And Electricity Costs For Home Heating, Steven L. Folkman Oct 1985

How To Compare Fuel And Electricity Costs For Home Heating, Steven L. Folkman

All Archived Publications

Selecting the least expensive energy source for heating a building can be a confusing task. The confusion usually is caused by the units used to measure energy consumption and the efficiencies of the device used to convert the energy source into heat. This document provides typical information which will aid in comparison of different energy sources.

Predictors Of Life Satisfaction Among Young Adults From Low-Income, Rural Areas Of Southern Appalachia, Stephan Maxwell Wilson Aug 1985

Predictors Of Life Satisfaction Among Young Adults From Low-Income, Rural Areas Of Southern Appalachia, Stephan Maxwell Wilson

Doctoral Dissertations

A person's quality of life has been assumed by some researchers to be related to material and achieved status or to the material conditions of life by other researchers. Individuals' perception of the quality of their lives, however, is an experience of satisfaction. Therefore, researchers have begun to examine how individuals perceive the quality of their lives based upon individuals' internal comparisons of their own expectations and aspirations (i.e., internal referents) as predictors of life satisfaction. These internal referents may not be tied to mainstream American standards or values. Most life satisfaction studies, to date, have concentrated on ...

Effects Of Cadmium, Calcium, Age And Parity On Bone Mineral, Density And Strength In Female Rats, Beverley F. Hammond Jun 1985

Effects Of Cadmium, Calcium, Age And Parity On Bone Mineral, Density And Strength In Female Rats, Beverley F. Hammond

Doctoral Dissertations

Weanling female rats were fed diets containing one of three levels of Ca (0.3, 0.6 or 0.9%) and one of four levels of Cd (0, 1, 5 or 10 ppm) in the drinking water. One half of each group was bred first as adolescents (55 days) and the other half as mature (110 days) females. Approximately 10 animals from each group were sacrificed after the first pregnancy and the remaining animals after the fourth pregnancy. Reproductive performance, plasma and bone Ca and P and bone density and strength were measured.

After the first pregnancy, offspring of dams ...

A Study Of Fine Structure Development Of Poly(Ethylene Terephthalate) In High Speed Spinning By Using A Pneumatic Drawdown Device, Chi-Chung Bai Jun 1985

A Study Of Fine Structure Development Of Poly(Ethylene Terephthalate) In High Speed Spinning By Using A Pneumatic Drawdown Device, Chi-Chung Bai

Doctoral Dissertations

High speed melt spinning of linear, branched, and high molecular weight poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) polymers using a pneumatic drawdown device was carried out in this study. Characterization of the structure of final spun fibers of each polymer and the structure development along the spinline for different mass throughputs and take-up velocities were studied.

The final spun fibers were characterized with various techniques: birefringence, density, wide angle x-ray scattering (WAXS), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), shrinkage, and tensile testing. A filament cutting technique was utilized and on-line temperature and birefringence measurements were performed to study the PET structure development along the ...

Household Production Of Food, Food Expenditures And Reported Adequacy Of Food , Carol Bennett Volker Jan 1985

Household Production Of Food, Food Expenditures And Reported Adequacy Of Food , Carol Bennett Volker

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This study examines relationships between household food production activities and (1) household expenditures for food, and (2) the household's assessment of the adequacy of their food. The source of the data is the 1977-1978 USDA Household Food Consumption Survey, which includes 14,930 households in the 48 conterminous states; Two different measures of household food production are used. The first, primary food production, is the number of activities engaged in that produced goods that could later be used in meal preparation and consumption. These activities include growing various fruits and vegetables, catching fish, and preserving various foods. The second ...

The Effect Of A Curriculum Unit On Death And Dying On The Ability Of Dietetic Students To Counsel Seriously Ill Patients , Mary Jane Oakland Jan 1985

The Effect Of A Curriculum Unit On Death And Dying On The Ability Of Dietetic Students To Counsel Seriously Ill Patients , Mary Jane Oakland

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A curriculum unit on death and dying was developed to meet the needs of dietetic students who are beginning their clinical experiences. The impact of this unit on the students' understanding of the grief process, their attitudes toward death and working with the dying, and their ability to counsel seriously ill patients was evaluated. The unit contained lecture outlines on understanding the grief process and prevention of professional burnout; and audiovisual materials were prepared for instructional use;The subjects for this study was 47 junior university students in three Coordinated Undergraduate Programs in dietetics. Demographic data were collected on age ...

Utilization And Effectiveness Of Multidisciplinary Teams In Educating Special Needs Students , Candice Ann Spencer-Dobson Jan 1985

Utilization And Effectiveness Of Multidisciplinary Teams In Educating Special Needs Students , Candice Ann Spencer-Dobson

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Two studies were conducted to assess the utilization and effectiveness of multidisciplinary teams (MDTs). The first assessed the use of MDTs in providing services to mentally handicapped (MH) and learning disabled (LD) students; the second examined factors that contributed to MDT effectiveness. Also investigated were team composition, courses into which MH and LD students were mainstreamed and selected demographic variables;A random sample of 300 school districts in three midwestern states was used. The first study had 222 responses, and the second had 218 responses;Frequencies, percentages, means and Chi-square tests of independence were used to analyze data in the ...
