In the United States alone there are over 48 million cases of foodborne illness, with most of these cases deriving from food cooked in the home (Young 2016). Many themes have been assessed such as confidence, knowledge, habits, taste in food preferences, and societal/social influences (Young 2016). My project requires people to reflect on their plastic/paper bag usage and how that affects their surroundings. Additionally, this may lead to a person becoming more self-aware on their waste production and help them to think of responsible ways to decrease wastefulness, creating a sense of empowerment. The purpose of this research was to explore how participation in Fashion FUNdamentals (FF) shaped girls' interest and confidence in the STEM disciplines, their STEM learning, and their feelings about themselves. FF is a two-week, no-cost, summer program (M-F, 9 am-5 pm) targeting underserved adolescent girls aged 10-13 years. Fashion FUNdamentals is a unique STEM program insomuch as it frames STEM learning within the context of fashion and includes both technical and social programming. Concept mapping has been shown to be an effective learning tool to enhance student learning. Two concept map projects, one for a textiles course and one for a first-year fashion industry course, were developed to help students understand the connections between ideas and to assess their understanding of the course content. For a final project in the textiles course, students developed concept maps displaying textile components, serviceability characteristics, aesthetics, and the relationships between and among concepts. The purpose of this study was to identify how students perceived their interaction with historic items of dress influenced their learning in a 20th century fashion history course. Students in this study were enrolled in a 20th century fashion history course at a university in the Midwest United States. At the end of the semester, students wrote a reflection focused on how their interaction with artifacts throughout the semester influenced their learning.
