Intergenerational Relationships Of Korean Older Adults And Implications For Their Health And Well-Being: Co-Residence And Grandchild Care, Jaeeon Yoo

This dissertation examines inter-generational families in the contemporary Korean cultural context and their connections with health and well-being. The dissertation is comprised of two studies. The first study investigates the changes in patriarchal kinship structure centered on the eldest son across periods and cohorts. The second study explores the association between caring for grandchildren and grandparents’ health over time.

This study investigated the social support network of pregnant (n=10) and parenting (n=22) teens recruited through local agencies. The support network was viewed both as support and as an agent of stress to adolescents. The pregnant and parenting teens' perceptions of motherhood and their attitudes toward being a parent were also studied. The teens had a variety of support types and support sources, but the two groups did not differ in those types and sources. This study investigated factors that influence parent-child communication on sexual topics and sought to determine if maternal teenage sexual experiences influence mothers' discussions with their adolescent children. Randomly selected mothers of children ages 10-14 years were mailed questionnaires. Using a list of sexual topics, respondents reported the frequency of discussions with their adolescent and completed a checklist of their own teenage sexual experiences. Correlational research design was used to rank and list sexual topics by frequency. The Relationship Of Decision-Making And Division Of Household Labor To Relationship Satisfaction, Tara Danielle Dekkers

The influence of the division of household labor and decision making on relationship satisfaction was examined. Equality in income and education between partners was also taken into consideration. Participants of this study consisted of 63 couples recruited from a community in the Midwest. The study used the Family Responsibility Index to measure the division of household labor, the Marital Decision Making Scale to measure decision-making, a subscale of the Dyadic Adjustment Scale to measure relationship satisfaction.
