Radical Social Ecology As Deep Pragmatism: A Call To The Abolition Of Systemic Dissonance And The Minimization Of Entropic Chaos, Arielle Brender May 2018

Radical Social Ecology As Deep Pragmatism: A Call To The Abolition Of Systemic Dissonance And The Minimization Of Entropic Chaos, Arielle Brender

Student Theses 2015-Present

This paper aims to shed light on the dissonance caused by the superimposition of Dominant Human Systems on Natural Systems. I highlight the synthetic nature of Dominant Human Systems as egoic and linguistic phenomenon manufactured by a mere portion of the human population, which renders them inherently oppressive unto peoples and landscapes whose wisdom were barred from the design process. In pursuing a radical pragmatic approach to mending the simultaneous oppression and destruction of the human being and the earth, I highlight the necessity of minimizing entropic chaos caused by excess energy expenditure, an essential feature of systems that aim ...

Agricultural Information Needs And Food Access In The Stann Creek District Of Belize, Sam E. Harris, Donna L. Graham

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

The purpose of this study was to describe agricultural information sources available to farmers and to describe food access and availability for the people of Dangriga, Stann Creek, Belize. This study used descriptive survey research methods with convenience sampling of the general public (n=22) and of farmers (n = 38) in the summer of 2017. Farmers use a variety of agricultural information sources with the extension service cited most often, followed by friends and fellow farmers. Weather, lack of information, pests, and inadequate access to capital were of primary concern for farmers. Face-to-face meetings were used most often by extension ...

The Vitamin B Content Of Vegetables, Margaret C. House, P. Mabel Nelson, E. S. Haber May 2017

The Vitamin B Content Of Vegetables, Margaret C. House, P. Mabel Nelson, E. S. Haber

Research Bulletin (Iowa Agriculture and Home Economics Experiment Station)

Statistical treatment of the data presented leads to the following conclusions:

1. The cortex of the carrot contains more vitamin B than the xylem and the periderm more than the cortex.

2. Within the limitations imposed by the small number of animals and the variability of each group, the data show that lettuce, kohlrabi and tomatoes, when grown under glass, are as potent in vitamin B as when grown in the direct sunlight. However, more data are necessary for positive proof.

3. Kohlrabi is a relatively good source of vitamin B.

4. A storage period of five months, under the ...

School Gardens: Cultivating A Child’S Nutritional Habits, Environmental Knowledge, And Sustainability Practices, Jeffrey Meltzer Jan 2015

School Gardens: Cultivating A Child’S Nutritional Habits, Environmental Knowledge, And Sustainability Practices, Jeffrey Meltzer

Honors Theses

School gardens have existed since the late nineteenth century and today are becoming increasingly popular in many parts of the world, including where I studied in Maine and Australia (AUS). Multiple organizations support school gardens in Maine, including the Maine School Garden Network, which has over 125 registered school gardens. In AUS, the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation primarily supports the school garden movement and has over 800 registered school gardens. While many researchers have studied school gardens, few have compared two countries, focused on environmental sustainability, or investigated Maine in particular. This thesis combines information from literature reviews, and ...

The Home Lawn, H. L. Lantz, L. C. Grove, E. P. Sylwester Apr 1946

The Home Lawn, H. L. Lantz, L. C. Grove, E. P. Sylwester

Bulletin P

A well-graded, fresh, green lawn is the first requirement for the home grounds planting. A fine lawn gives the family physical comfort. We often get our most satisfying relaxation on a soft, cool, well-kept lawn. Every family can have a good lawn by following the simple directions given in this bulletin.

You reap what you put into the lawn at the beginning. A properly made lawn will cost you less money to maintain. It is very important that thought be given to the proposed lawn area from the standpoint of soil drainage, organic matter content and fertility. Above all, start ...

Preservation Of Fruits And Vegetables By Freezing In Refrigerated Locker Plants, H. H. Plagge, Belle Lowe Jun 1942

Preservation Of Fruits And Vegetables By Freezing In Refrigerated Locker Plants, H. H. Plagge, Belle Lowe

Bulletin P

The purpose of this bulletin is to provide authentic information on the selection, preparation and utilization of fruits and vegetables preserved under frozen food locker systems in Iowa. The recommendations are based on investigations under locker plant conditions conducted over a period of 4 years by the Iowa Agricultural Experiment Station. In order that the products would be comparable to those obtained by using ordinary household equipment, preparation and processing was done on a small scale in a kitchen laboratory to simulate home conditions.2 Careful attention was given to details of necessary measures preparatory to freezing as well as ...

House Plants, J. B. Wingert Jul 1940

House Plants, J. B. Wingert

Bulletin P

Growing plants indoors serves at least three purposes. It satisfies a common desire to have growing plants the year around. It provides an interesting and challenging hobby for those who attempt to grow an extensive collection of pot plants. House plants also can play a definite part in interior decoration when varieties are carefully chosen, well grown and properly placed. Regardless of purpose, there are relatively few homes that do not include at least one house plant.

House plants vary widely in their ability to thrive under certain house conditions. One objective of this bulletin is to point out the ...
