Differences In Bachelors Degree Attainment: Are College Degrees A Function Of Habitus?, Colin S. Mccaleb

Dissertations

This study sought evidence that Pierre Bourdieu's habitus influences college graduation and college transferring patterns. Hypothesizing that low socio-economic students have to change their habitus in the elitist environment of higher education, two research questions were advanced to explore this phenomenon, the first asking if there was evidence consistent with the idea that habitus influenced graduation rates, the second question asking if there was evidence consistent with the idea that habitus influenced transferring patterns. Under each research question, several hypotheses were tested using descriptive statistics, analysis of variance, Chi square tests of independence, and logistic regressions. Income and civic ...

Community College Partnerships With Business And Industry, Maryann Sharpley Lavendar

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to describe, analyze and interpret the expectations and outcomes of industry partnerships with community colleges to determine their value, emerging themes that have contributed to their success or demise, and whether the goals initially set forth in establishing these partnerships was achieved. This study is based upon resource dependency theory, which proposed that if government and state funding given in support of community college education was diminishing, then the need is to better understand the value of and how community college and industry partnerships are working toward continuation. Resource dependency theory revolves around the ...

Illinois Public Community College Department Chair Roles And Role Conflict, Kristine M. Young Jan 2007

Illinois Public Community College Department Chair Roles And Role Conflict, Kristine M. Young

Vice President for Academic Services Scholarship

This research had two purposes: to determine community college department chair roles and to determine whether role conflict exists for the status of Illinois public community college department chair. The research was divided into two phases. In Phase I, community college department chair role factors were determined. Using ratings of importance reported by a sample of Illinois public community college department chairs on a modified version of Carroll and Gmelch’s (1992) department chair duty questionnaire, principal components analysis was employed to determine an underlying factor structure. Five factors were determined and interpreted as department chair roles: Department Leader, Resource ...

IACE Hall of Fame Repository

More than 225 major works published in English from national and international sources on andragogy are presented here, in order to provide a clear and understandable, international foundation for the linkage between the research, theory and practice of andragogy and its application to Adult Education and Human Resource Development. Six themes have emerged that provide a foundation for the linkage. The evolution of the term: historical antecedents shaping the concept; comparison of American and European understanding; popularizing and sustaining the American and world-wide concept; practical applications; and theory, research, and definition.

Grocery Store Politics: Leading The Rural Community College, Pamela L. Eddy Jan 2007

Grocery Store Politics: Leading The Rural Community College, Pamela L. Eddy

Articles

Rural America is characterized by decreasing populations, increasing poverty, limited economic growth, and limited access to cultural events. The context of the rural environment makes leading colleges in these locations different than in larger, more urban regions. The research reported here investigated the experience of rural community college leaders to determine more about the phenomenon of how they constructed their leadership given their rural context. Findings indicate less anonymity for rural community college leaders, a reliance on relationship building to accomplish goals, and a smaller local peer network to aid in reflecting upon the duties of the president.

As current leaders take their leave, it is essential to ensure there are qualified persons stepping forward to continue leading the colleges. Leadership development programs must be in place to assure there are trained leaders to continue the tradition of the community colleges.;The purpose of this study was to describe the impact of two existing leadership development programs on the community college system and its employees in Iowa. Assessing Writing Through Reflection: A Qualitative Inquiry, Eden F. Pearson Jan 2007

Assessing Writing Through Reflection: A Qualitative Inquiry, Eden F. Pearson

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Writing is a challenge to teach and difficult to assess. However, in this era of accountability, college-level writing must be assessed. The problem addressed in this case study was whether the writing ability of community college students could be authentically assessed. The purpose of this study was to seek to understand the nature of reflection in writing assessment. The experiences of first-year composition instructors, first-year composition students, and trained portfolio readers who participated in a new, holistically-scored portfolio course evaluation program at an urban, Midwestern community college were explored. The assessment required first-year composition students to submit a reflective letter ...

The Influence Of Organizational And Governance Structures On The Frequency Of Management Skill Utilization Of Community College Chief Executive Officers In The United States, Timothy R. Oxley

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Community colleges are purported to be in the midst of a leadership crisis due to the impending retirements of chief executive officers (CEOs) and senior administrators over the next several years. Concurrently, the demands upon CEOs to effectively and efficiently manage their institutions are more critical now in an effort to balance the demands placed upon them by public policy and institutional stakeholders. The purpose of this research was to examine the influence of institutional context, governance and organizational structures, on the frequency with which CEOs utilized certain management skills. The study population was community college CEOs as identified by ...

The Challenges Of The Community College Presidency In The New Millennium: Pathways, Preparation, Competencies, And Leadership Programs Needed To Survive, Christopher A. Duree

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Many of the community college presidents, upper-level administrators, and faculty, who began their careers during the advent of the community colleges in the 1960's and 1970's, are nearing the end of their careers. In a survey conducted by the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) in 2001, community college presidents responded that 45% planned to retire by 2007 (Shults, 2001). In a similar study, Weisman and Vaughan (2002) found that 79% of the presidents surveyed intended to retire by 2012. The amount of history, experience and expertise that will be lost with their retirement is immeasurable.;In April ...

And finally, the study investigated whether or not faculty perceived if their participation in learning communities affected their stand-alone classes and other college responsibilities such as committee work. This qualitative inquiry ...

Intimate Partner Violence Among Male And Female U.S. Community College Students, Shakiera Benson Jan 2007

Intimate Partner Violence Among Male And Female U.S. Community College Students, Shakiera Benson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Intimate partner violence affects a significant portion of college-aged individuals, but researchers know little about how the intersection of age, race, class, and gender influence intimate partner violence among community college students in the United States. In this quantitative correlational study, I examined the relationship between intimate partner violence and gender, race, age, class, marital status, and past abuse among community college students using the intersectionality theory. I used the Abusive Behavior Inventory and a demographic survey to collect data via a convenience sample of the target population of men (n = 220) and women (n = 330) attending a community college ...
