An Analysis Of The Academic Success Achieved By Five Freshman Cohorts Through A Community College Developmental Education Program., Nancy K. Gray-Barnett

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The challenge of underprepared students' entering America's colleges and universities is not new. Because of their "open door" policies, community colleges are more likely to enroll students who are not college prepared. This retrospective study focused on the performance of students who had completed required developmental education courses compared to the performance of students without developmental requirements. The study examined developmental education success measures for five cohorts of first-time degree-seeking freshmen each tracked for a six-year period enrolled at Walters State Community College located in Tennessee.

The success measures compared included grade point averages earned in college-level mathematics and ...

The Assessment Of Tennessee Community College Roles In Business Incubator Development As Perceived By Administrators And Tenants., Garry Grau

Unite For Success: Creating Business And Community College Partnerships For Economic Development, Linda Serra Hagedorn Mar 2001

Unite For Success: Creating Business And Community College Partnerships For Economic Development, Linda Serra Hagedorn

Linda Serra Hagedorn

While community colleges have historically been a source of training for many people, the latest trend is a drift from their vocational focus to one of a more scholarly focus: transfer to four-year institutions. At the same time, business and industry are demanding more highly-trained workers as many employment opportunities remain open due to a lack of appropriately trained individuals. This white paper posits a confluence of the missions and needs of community colleges and local businesses and describes scenarios where long-term united efforts will assist local residents to engage the jobs and opportunities in Los Angeles and to strengthen ...

Andragogy: The Foundation For Its Theory, Research And Practice Linkage, John A. Henschke Edd Jan 2001

Andragogy: The Foundation For Its Theory, Research And Practice Linkage, John A. Henschke Edd

IACE Hall of Fame Repository

Although andragogy became popularized in the 1970's and 1980's in the USA through the work of Malcolm Knowles, its original introduction into the USA was in 1926 by E.C. Lindeman, and again in 1927 by E. C. Lindeman and M. L. Anderson. However, the oldest known published document using the concept was authored by a German -- Alexander Kapp, in 1833. Much of the published literature in recent times has focused on the popularized use of the term, reflecting either a wholesale support of Knowles' version of andragogy, or a "debunking" for the reason of what some call ...

The Outstanding Community College President: A Case Study Of Four Presidents , Stanley Olin Vittetoe Jan 2001

The Outstanding Community College President: A Case Study Of Four Presidents , Stanley Olin Vittetoe

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this qualitative study was to discover how outstanding community college presidents conceptualize their leadership practices and behaviors and what experiences they believe have prepared them for the presidency. It also sought to learn how their strategic constituencies evaluated the presidents. Purposeful sampling was used to select four community college presidents from a group of presidents identified as outstanding using a peer nomination process in a previous study by C. H. McFarlin (1997).;Personal interviews were conducted with each president and representatives of their critical constituencies: faculty, administrators, and the governing board. In addition, at each institution, the ...

Iowa's Community College Transfer Students, 1996-2000: Demographics, Graduation, And Retention Rates , Ann Marie Fields Jan 2001

Iowa's Community College Transfer Students, 1996-2000: Demographics, Graduation, And Retention Rates , Ann Marie Fields

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This study compares Iowa community college (CC) transfer students who transferred to one of Iowa's three Regent universities in the fall of 1996 to students who started at one of the Iowa Regent universities in 1994 and who were still attending such university in the fall of 1996 (referred to as non-transfer, or NT, students). In previous educational literature, these students have been referred to as "native" students. To be culturally sensitive, this study identifies these students as "non-transfer students" or NT students. Demographic comparisons are made according to age, gender, ACT scores, and the number of credits either ...

Nontraditional Students' Learning And Developmental Experiences At Two-Year Institutions: An Assessment Of Hispanic/Latino(A) Students' Experiences At Selected Community Colleges In Iowa , Jaime Hernandez Mijangos Jan 2001

Nontraditional Students' Learning And Developmental Experiences At Two-Year Institutions: An Assessment Of Hispanic/Latino(A) Students' Experiences At Selected Community Colleges In Iowa , Jaime Hernandez Mijangos

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Despite the latest substantial increase in Hispanic/Latino(a) students enrollment in Higher Education institutions, more than 20% since 1993 at two-year and four-year colleges and universities and an increased enrollment of 4.7% in community colleges during a one-year period (1996--1997), issues of retention, transfer, and graduation are still the main focus of educational researchers, practitioners, and policy makers. Iowa community colleges have followed similar enrollment trends in the last decade or so when considering the growth of nontraditional students (Hispanic/Latino(a)s among them) entering such two-year institutions. As any other ethnic minority student group, Hispanic/Latino ...

Navigating The Currents Of Change, Barbara Hill, Madeleine Green, Peter D. Eckel

GSE Publications

Colleges and universities are constantly undergoing change of some sort. Each new academic year brings computer software upgrades, fresh scheduling issues, new courses, and an influx of faculty and staff members.

But some institutional change is more ambitious, penetrating into the fabric of the institution. Many call this change "transformational"—meaning that it affects culture, structures, policies, attitudes, and behaviors.
