This study's primary purpose was to identify student, instructor, and program factors associated with student success in the Associate Degree Nursing program at North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC). Involving one class, the research utilized quantitative and qualitative components;The quantitative study used two instruments. The purpose was to evaluate developmental course effectiveness by comparing three groups of students in terms of the following: cumulative grade point average; total credits earned; goal attainment for certificate, degree, and transfer; certificate earned; and degree earned. Problem. This study sought to develop a tool to identify the nonsuccessful, at-risk community-college student for correct placement, monitoring, and retention. A comparison in academic achievement of at-risk, remediated students with nonremedial students in a first college-level mathematics class (Intermediate Algebra 101) was also studied.

Method. The ex post facto study sought to determine to what extent the successful and nonsuccessful at-risk mathematics students (n = 358) differ on ASSET test scores, criterion referenced pretest scores, mathematics attitude scores, attendance profile, race, gender, and demographic variables. The data on strategic planning were collected using a questionnaire developed by this investigator and validated by a panel of 15 national experts. The Relationship Between The Attitudes Of Directors And Instructors And Student Ratings In Remedial And Developmental Studies In Tennessee's Community Colleges, Carolyn H. Brown

The purpose of this study was to determine if a relationship existed between the attitudes of remedial and developmental directors and instructors and student ratings. A population of 230 full-time directors and instructors and 3,269 remedial students were surveyed in the Fall of 1990. The return rate was 95% for the directors and instructors with the student rate dependent upon instructors administering the instruments. This study examines students with diagnosed writing deficiencies who persisted (Group II, n = 350) and provided evidence of mastery of the subject matter in a "Mastery Learning" remedial English course designed after the Keller plan of Personalized System of Instruction (PSI) at Kalamazoo Valley Community College.
