Despite the latest substantial increase in Hispanic/Latino(a) students enrollment in Higher Education institutions, more than 20% since 1993 at two-year and four-year colleges and universities and an increased enrollment of 4.7% in community colleges during a one-year period (1996--1997), issues of retention, transfer, and graduation are still the main focus of educational researchers, practitioners, and policy makers. The purpose of this qualitative study was to discover how outstanding community college presidents conceptualize their leadership practices and behaviors and what experiences they believe have prepared them for the presidency. It also sought to learn how their strategic constituencies evaluated the presidents. Purposeful sampling was used to select four community college presidents from a group of presidents identified as outstanding using a peer nomination process in a previous study by C. H. This study compares Iowa community college (CC) transfer students who transferred to one of Iowa's three Regent universities in the fall of 1996 to students who started at one of the Iowa Regent universities in 1994 and who were still attending such university in the fall of 1996 (referred to as non-transfer, or NT, students). In previous educational literature, these students have been referred to as "native" students.
