Between 2011 and 2016, 84% of senior leaders in community colleges indicated retirement intentions and thereby exposed a need to provide better mentorship, training, and early selection of potential replacements for college executives. This study focused on building a profile of characteristics of community college (CC) athletics coaches in Iowa and on exploring the possible relationships among these characteristics. Using a mixed-method research design that incorporates SPSS quantitative analysis of a survey and seven semi-structured interviews, the research data draws a clearer picture of what these CC intercollegiate athletics coaches look like, what they do and go through in order to coach, and why they coach.

Nontraditional Students In Management And Accounting Programs: Investigating The Relationship Between Personality And Major Satisfaction In The Community College Setting, Brad Ward

High school students and working-age adults are frequently pressured by teachers, relatives, peers, employers, and state and federal governments to attend college for such reasons as obtaining new skills, increasing salary and prestige, and seeking new career opportunities (Baxter & Kavanagh, 2012; Calmes, 2014; Holcomb, 2008; Pringle, DuBose, & Yankey, 2010). Approximately 25% of these students drop out of school within the freshman year (ACT, 2013) due, in part, to a poor personality fit with their major (Jones & Jones, 2014). Consequently, attrition has become a costly problem for university administrators and taxpayers (American Institutes for Research, 2011). Personality is a predictor of academic success (Rosander & Backstrom, 2014; Tyagi & Bansal, 2010), and attrition may be reduced via proper personality screening. Personality psychologists agree that personality can be described by five, broad traits: extraversion, conscientiousness, agreeableness, neuroticism, and openness to experience (Hunt, 2007). Personality has also been linked to major satisfaction (Logue, Lounsbury, Gupta, & Leong, 2007), which, in turn, is linked to positive retention rates (Zhai, 2012). Few studies regarding personality and its relation to major satisfaction have been carried out on business programs, specifically the management and accounting disciplines (Lounsbury, Smith, Levy, Leong, & Gibson, 2009). Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate which of the Big Five traits relate to major satisfaction in the hopes of discovering a connection that will help university administrators to better improve retention rates. Furthermore, nontraditional student characteristics, such as gender, age, and work history, were examined to determine whether and to what degree each of these factors may influence trait development (Debast et al., 2014; Kovar, Ott, & Fisher, 2003; Scollon & Diener, 2006). First Year College Experience is a face-to-face three-credit college course that provided the subject for the current research. The current research was conducted at a small, Midwest community college. This course expanded the college’s existing one-credit hour course called College Success Skills. In the hope of amplifying the impact of the existing course, several learning modules and objectives were designed. The current quantitative, non-experimental research demonstrated that students passing the First Year College Experience course tended to have higher GPAs than students who did not take the course.

In this companion dissertation findings are reported of applied case study research on four community college organizational units that consistently meet or exceed standard performance measures. Ample prior evidence confirmed that performance extended significantly beyond what might be explained by available tangible resources alone. Twelve current funds revenue sources utilized by 212 community colleges in 11 Midwest states during the decade of the 1990s were analyzed, using data from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), available on the Internet. Comparisons were made by state as well as time, using the two-way analysis of variance. This study was conducted at Northwest Iowa Community College (NCC), located in Sheldon, Iowa. Northwest Iowa Community College serves a 4 1/2 county rural area. In December of 1992 NCC placed a seven million dollar bond issue before the voters. This referendum which needed a 60% plus one voter approval received a 36.41% approval.
