The number of military-connected students enrolling in community colleges has increased dramatically in the past decade, and this trend is expected to continue. This research focused on examining factors that contribute to the academic success of community college students. How Community Colleges In Texas Prioritize Resources For Latino Men, Sarah L. Rodriguez-Jones, Kelty T. Garbee, Ryan A. Miller, Victor B. Saenz

This study explored how administrators at community colleges conceptualized change related to resource allocation and managing competing priorities to support targeted programming for Latino men. The study included the perspectives of 39 administrators from seven community colleges across Texas using concepts associated with institutional change to ground our analysis. Findings revealed that state and national initiatives, particularly those concerned with enhancing success for students of color, influenced how community college administrators approached change on their campuses. In addition, community college institutional mission, leadership, and a desire for data-informed resource management influenced the approach to resource allocation for Latino men.

However, there is very little known about the completion agenda in community college global counterparts outside of the United States. Many four-year institutions are experiencing increasing enrollment of students transferring from two-year institutions. While many institutions collect quantitative data that illustrate enrollment, retention, and graduation rates of transfer students, little is known about the transfer-student transition experience. For this qualitative assessment, 22 traditional-age students who transferred from a two-year community college to a four-year institution were interviewed. Specifically, this assessment looked at reasons why students first enrolled at the community college, the mechanics of the transfer process, and academic and social integration. Student responses provide insight into how institutions can better support the transition and success of transfer students.

Institutions were selected for the Documenting Effective Educational Practices (DEEP) study because they have higher than expected graduation rates and scores on the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). These institutions have been characterized in a number of ways, but, most important, it was presumed that faculty, students, administrators, and others engaged in a variety of institutional activities and practices that advanced learning.
