This study applies Critical Race Theory as a critical lens to gain a clearer understanding of highly racialized policies and teaching practices around international student engagement in US higher education. This qualitative study examined the incorporation of culturally responsive literacy instruction. The purpose was to explore teachers’ perception of effective culturally responsive literacy and instruction and ways in which the participants implemented culturally responsive literacy instruction. This study identified and explored three themes affecting three ways in which the participants incorporated culturally responsive literacy into their classrooms. The findings of this qualitative study align with literature on culturally responsive literacy instruction.

This article presents a different discourse to promote access to and equity in higher education by re-examining the value of for-profit education and its attractiveness to African-American students underserved by traditional institutions. The authors suggest that for-profit institutions face similar challenges to traditional schools in the matriculation of African-American students but to a larger degree. Although WBLOs are not new learning environments, understanding and clearly defining them is increasingly necessary. In Kentucky, WBLOs are part of the political discourse in post-secondary education. This dissertation focuses on a study of reading-into-writing strategies employed by students in two sections of first-year-composition (FYC) that were paired with a support course as part of an accelerated learning program (ALP) at a community college. Each FYC course was comprised of 11 students whom the college had deemed college-ready without the ALP course, and 11 students who were deemed at remedial levels in reading and / or writing and who were subsequently required to enroll in the ALP course. This qualitative study of informal teacher leaders used a phenomenological method of research to investigate the lived experiences of teachers who have led in schools without a formal title or position of leadership. One of the major roles of the flight supervisory control during flight training is that a trainee is guided to stay within acceptable range of flight performance parameters. Under the supervisory control during flight training, however, a trainee may perceive psychological stress. Quantitative Reasoning: A Guided Pathway From Two- To Four-Year Colleges, Eric Gaze

In this editorial, I place the Quantitative Reasoning (QR) movement within the national context of math pathways and the broader Guided Pathways initiative. Community colleges in particular are experiencing a radical re-envisioning of their math requirements. Thoughtful reflection on the communication and computation needs of their students for the 21st century has led to state-wide adoption of QR curricula as an alternative pathway to the traditional College Algebra route. These Guided Pathways have shown great promise in boosting graduation rates and addressing equity and the achievement gap for our most vulnerable, first-generation, low-income students.

This teaching strategy was developed in collaboration with a local community group who worked with university faculty on an event that involved raising funds for their scholarship award and bringing awareness to the university collection. The activity culminated in a fashion show featuring historic garments from the university collection rolled down a runway on a dress form, followed by an original apparel design that was inspired by the historic piece and made by a university student. Objective: Beyond understanding whether first-year student success interventions in community colleges are effective—for which there is mixed evidence in the literature—this study’s purpose was to uncover how they work to realize observed outcomes, including at times unanticipated undesirable outcomes.

Method: This qualitative multiple case study used cultural historical activity theory (CHAT) to unpack interactions and tensions among programmatic-level features and individual-level experiences and actions. We conducted classroom observation, document analysis, and interviews with instructors and students in four student success courses across diverse contexts.

The purpose of this dissertation was to investigate whether students who completed the accelerated learning program (ALP) in English at Butler Community College in fall 2016 perceived a three-part, structured approach to the course as having been a significant factor to their persistence and successful completion of the course. The purpose of this study was to explore the factors that promote or inhibit the reading achievement of elementary children. The participants for this study were administrators who were employed at eleven Title I schools in North Carolina. The study used a qualitative design and collected data by phone interviews with elementary administrators.
