Assessing Undergraduate Fashion History Research Via Content Analysis, Justine De Young Jan 2020

Assessing Undergraduate Fashion History Research Via Content Analysis, Justine De Young

Art History Pedagogy & Practice

Undergraduate art history students are often asked to write research essays on specific artworks, but that research is rarely considered publishable or reliable. This article analyzes undergraduate student essays on fashion history to determine whether the research produced can be considered reliable according to generally accepted art historical standards. It employs content analysis to make those determinations in addition to the instructor's own standards and those governing the Fashion History Timeline, an open-access hub of fashion history research. The article investigates the impact of a multi-stage writing and revision process on student writing outcomes and on student grades. Finally ...

In this research study, young middle schoolers engaged in a stimulating workshop that seamlessly merged fashion with technology and electrical engineering. Dance Of Exile: The Sakharoffs’ Visual Performances In Montevideo (1935–1948), Pablo Munoz Ponzo May 2019

Dance Of Exile: The Sakharoffs’ Visual Performances In Montevideo (1935–1948), Pablo Munoz Ponzo

All Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This thesis explores the life-work chronology of the dancers and choreographers Clotilde von Derp (whose surname then was Sakharoff) and Alexander Sakharoff, who were exiled in Montevideo, Uruguay, and Buenos Aires, Argentina, between 1941 and 1948. During their stay in the Rio de la Plata region, the Sakharoffs stirred up the art scene by performing extremely detailed dances with great attention to costume design. This thesis begins with a review of the reception of the dancers’ performances by the artistic and cultural circles in Montevideo, arguing that the Sakharoffs’ “queer” trajectory resonated with the Uruguayan artistic community, influencing the creation ...

Alternative Futures: The Creative Reconsideration Of Fashion Objects, Kathryn Roberts Feb 2018

Alternative Futures: The Creative Reconsideration Of Fashion Objects, Kathryn Roberts

All Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This project is the beginning of what I intend to be a larger, evolving work that seeks to marry the theoretical with the practical when considering fashion objects that have “served their purpose”. The object at the project’s focal point: a worn out pair of blue jeans. My particular focus on jeans is based on the fact that they, alongside the t-shirt, are one of the most ubiquitous and commonly owned pieces of clothing for people all over the world. This wardrobe staple transcends age, race, and class, as it occupies an iconic status that has made them invulnerable ...

“Creating A Virtual Retail Store Using The Sims4™ Programs In A Visual Merchandising Course”, April Elisha Stanley, Corissa Hite, Jennifer Wood

International Textile and Apparel Association (ITAA) Annual Conference Proceedings

SnapFashun, a plugin software used in conjunction with Adobe Illustrator (SnapFashun, 2017), was previously used in a visual merchandising course to create a final project: a digital retail store. Due to technological problems and student frustrations, an alternative was chosen: The Sims4™ programs. The expectation was the change in technology would permit students to focus on applications of visual merchandising concepts and result in a more engaged, creative final project. YouTube videos and online guides aided in learning the software for The Sims4™ programs. The outcome was a digital retail store that permitted increased engagement, greater creativity, and the application ...

Art And Symbolism: The Technique Of Applying Hidden Meaning And Communicating Specific Ideas Through Art, Andrea C. Macbean Dec 2013

Art And Symbolism: The Technique Of Applying Hidden Meaning And Communicating Specific Ideas Through Art, Andrea C. Macbean

Senior Honors Theses

Symbolism is an artistic style frequently used in the arts. Through the course of art history, it was its own artistic movement as well. The incorporation of specific symbols, shapes, colors, or identifiable images communicates to the viewer an intended message or statement. Frequently, symbolism appears to be hidden or initially unperceived by the intended audience. In some works, symbolism is so abstract that it needs explanation or clarification to be understood completely by the viewer. This thesis will analyze a few techniques of symbolism that can be incorporated in a work of art to communicate truth, entice thought, point ...
