Metaphor Ii: Understanding Dramatic Form In The Transportation Systems Of Metaphor, Daniel Larner Jul 2004

Metaphor Ii: Understanding Dramatic Form In The Transportation Systems Of Metaphor, Daniel Larner

Fairhaven Faculty Publications

This paper is a continuation of an investigation into the essence of metaphor. I will argue here that dramatic action seems to epitomize that essence and intensify it. Further, I will argue that the world of tragicomedy is an ancient, almost genetic metaphor for the course of human events and the way of the world. It is a form of perception, a way of knowing. The vitality of contemporary tragicomedy, and the analogy between dramatic action and the metaphors of physics show us how fundamental this view has come to be.

A Study Of George S. Kaufman's Metatheatrics, Nancy Alease Jarrell Jun 2004

A Study Of George S. Kaufman's Metatheatrics, Nancy Alease Jarrell

Theses and Dissertations

Known for his comedic plays, George S. Kaufman became one of the most successful playwrights in American theatre history. Part of his success stems from his metatheatrical writing techniques, which he used by incorporating people from his life into his plays and by writing about the business he experienced first hand. To date, no sources link Kaufman and the metatheatrics of his work. Therefore, this thesis highlights these links and explores how far Kaufman took his metatheatrical viewpoints, why he chose to use this method, and what statements he made by using these techniques. In order to prove this thesis ...

Anton In Show Business, Otterbein University Theatre And Dance Department Jun 2004

Anton In Show Business, Otterbein University Theatre And Dance Department

2004 Summer Theatre

This madcap comedy follows three actresses across the footlights, down the rabbit hole, and into a strangely familiar Wonderland that looks a lot like American theatre – the resemblance is uncanny! As these women pursue their dream of performing Chekhov in Texas, they’re whisked through a maelstrom of “good ideas” that offer unique solutions to the Three Sisters’ need to have life’s deeper purpose revealed. In the tradition of great backstage comedies, Anton in Show Business conveys the joys, pains, and absurdities of “putting on a play” at the turn of the century.

La Crisis Teatral De Los Años Veinte En España, Mar Rebollo Calzada

Teatro: Revista de Estudios Culturales / A Journal of Cultural Studies

In this paper the author examines a practically unknown aspect of the polemic about posibilismo between Alfonso Sastre and Antonio Buero Vallejo in 1960: the censor's criterion.

Stripping To The Undercoat: A Review And Reflections On A Piece Of Organization Theatre, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark, Iain Mangham

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In this article, we review one 'tailor-made play', one piece of organization theatre called Varnishing the Truth. We then reflect on the questions we asked of ourselves while watching this performance and reviewing the video of it: how does this activity relate to its claimed theoretical foundations (Boal's forum theatre)? Is forum theatre an appropriate model for organization theatre? Can 'things be made to move' by an activity such as the one to which we were an audience? In the process of answering these questions, we emphasize the reductive adoption of radical techniques (that is, Boal's forum theatre ...

Marivaux (1688-1742) the author of the play on which this delightful chamber musical is based, was a commissioned playwright for the Comedie Italienne, a troupe of exiled Italian actors who performed Commedia dell' Arte inspired comedies in Paris. Marivaux wrote one play a year for this company over a period of 20 years, all of them dealing with characters who discover they are in love, but have difficulty expressing their feelings. Although the action of this piece takes place in ancient Greece, you will discover that the setting and costumes are distinctly mid-1700s. It was Marivaux's practice to dress ...

Antihero: Jung And The Art Of Storytelling, Amanda G. Bratton '04

Honors Projects

It was Sigmund Freud who first promoted the idea of universal symbols by observing the recurring symbols found in dreams. It was his belief that the interpretation of these symbols was a link to the subconscious and that they were the result of the expression or repression of sexual energy that was common to all individuals. Based upon this theory Karl lung formulated his own theories about universal symbols stating the belief that they derived from a 'collective unconscious' that was inherent in the psyche of all individuals. Through the observation of dream symbolism and storytelling practices it became evident ...
