Revitalización Económica: The Change of Chilean Economic Principles in the 1970s

Socio-economic policy reforms of the 1970s had a profound impact on Chilean society. These reforms were highly controversial and sharply debated both nationally and internationally. My project investigates the impact of foreign interventions on Chile’s economy and society. These interventions resulted in a rise in economic activity and, at the same time, produced substantial social unrest. Despite social instability and human rights violations, these economic interventions forged the framework for a stable economic future. At the center of these economic reforms stood the 'Chicago Boys' and their program ...

Languages and Literature Undergraduate Student Works

Importance of Spanish Education in Montana

Currently, in the United States, Spanish speaking English language learners are the largest growing population. This includes large numbers of families and individuals from El Salvador, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Mexico, most of whom reside in Texas, California, Arizona, Florida, and New Jersey. So why is Spanish education important in Montana? Most students taking Spanish classes in high school will take the recommended two years and never look back. With this in mind, it is the responsibility of the teacher to help form well-rounded, respectful individuals with the time they have.

Learning another language ...

Part Of Her: An Exploration Of The Bodily Boundaries Between Parent And Child And The Limits Of Personhood In Lina Meruane’S Sangre En El Ojo, Sawnie Smith

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

Lina Meruane (1970-) is a contemporary Chilean author whose novels began to captivate at the turn of the twenty-first century. Her works are replete with unsettling meditations on the fragility of human flesh. And the promise of illness—its infectious potential—clings to the air in her literary worlds, such as those found in Fruta podrida (2007) and Sangre en el ojo (2012). This latter novel in particular serves as a vivid example of Meruane’s talent for writing sickly atmospheres. It is a novel saturated with bodily imagery, such as disembodied eyes, parasitic embraces, and grim sexual foreplay. All ...

Pilot Study Of Empathy In Bilingual Adults, Libby Moberg May 2019

Pilot Study Of Empathy In Bilingual Adults, Libby Moberg

Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects

Empathy is of critical public health importance due to its association with relationship satisfaction and well-being (Davis & Oathout, 1987; Davis, 1983). There is growing evidence that bilingual individuals may have higher levels of empathy (Javor, 2016). One potential mechanism for this relationship is that bilingual individuals tend to have higher levels of executive functioning (Costa et al, 2008), which is linked to higher empathy because individuals are able to more easily adopt others’ perspectives. Previous studies examining this question have largely relied on self-report questionnaires assessing empathy as a general tendency (i.e., trait). No studies have examined differences in the empathic ...

Working Lives: Artistic Solidarity In Revolutionary Peru (1960–1980), Jose R. Chavarry

All Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation examines the discourses and experiences of cultural work as a form of intellectual and artistic solidarity in Peru during the 1960s and 1970s. Amid the broader Latin American and global spirit of revolution, anti-imperialism and Third World liberation, in Peru these decades saw a radical transformation in society where rural and urban masses rose against a traditional political and socioeconomic system that maintained colonial structures of domination and oppression of marginalized populations. In an attempt to rein in this desborde popular, as it became known, the nationalist and populist Revolutionary Government of the Armed Forces and a consolidating ...

Una enunciación intersticial: la poética del destierro de Carlos de Rokha

The era of the Chilean vanguard, in early twentieth century, is currently experiencing a resurgence of interest and study. In particular, the popular uprisings of 1938 and significant advancement of women in cultural and social terms are pivotal, yet it was also the stage of state-sanctioned repression and violence, and in the ensuing decades, persecution of activists and marginalized individuals. My study of the work of the surrealist poet, Carlos de Rokha (1920-1962), highlights the close relationship in the creation of the literary canon with the definition of a ...

Revisiting Juchitán: Witnessing An Indigenous Mexico Within The Latin American Archive, Michelle G. De La Cruz

All Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Throughout archives of photographic collections, as one discovers the focused, artistic selective process of images that become part of a photographer’s collection, one must venture further and ask: will these choices be decisively remembered by an individual or collective audience or actively be dismissed, misunderstood, and denied presence? For my master’s thesis, I will be analyzing Mexican photographer Graciela Iturbide’s photobook, Juchitán de las Mujeres, a photo-collection of the women-empowered indigenous society in Oaxaca, Mexico which erupted during Latin American photography’s prime in the 20th century, turning away from a deeply exoticized past and towards a ...

Vocalización O Desconsonantización, Orlando Alba

All Faculty Publications

Providing Social Services To Latino Immigrants - A Theological Perspective, Olivia Mahon Apr 2019

Providing Social Services To Latino Immigrants - A Theological Perspective, Olivia Mahon

Carroll College Student Undergraduate Research Festival

Each year, thousands of people immigrate to the United States, and many are from various Latin American countries. The motivation for leaving their home is a result of economic burdens, violence, corruption and much more. For many, the experience of immigration is one filled with challenges and dire circumstances. Many families arrive in the United States with nothing. These communities are in need of support, often provided by social workers. However the diverse backgrounds and the extensive set of challenges these people face hinder social workers’ abilities to provide the necessary services. The present research looks at the approach of ...

Perception Or Reality? U.S. Portrayals Of Latino Immigrants Versus Latino Immigrant Literature, Mariah Swenson Apr 2019

Perception Or Reality? U.S. Portrayals Of Latino Immigrants Versus Latino Immigrant Literature, Mariah Swenson

Carroll College Student Undergraduate Research Festival

The United States and Latin America share about a 1,954 mile long border, and the U.S. is home to millions of Latino immigrants, the descendants of Latino immigrants and Latinos who have watched the border move around them. The primary discourse around Latinos living in the United States is typically created by non-Latinos, and this one-sided discussion has created a certain perspective, and often a critical prejudice, toward multiple generations of Latinos. This research presentation will explore the juxtaposition of socio-cultural identities constructed by Latinos about themselves and those identities constructed for them by others.

A Pilgrim’S Progress For The Digital, Post-Human(Ist) Age?: Social And Religious Allegory In Russell Banks’S Lost Memory Of Skin, David J. Buehrer Dr.

South East Coastal Conference on Languages & Literatures (SECCLL)

In Lost Memory of Skin (2011), his twelfth novel, Russell Banks continues his exploration of the dark underbelly of American society—in this instance, the moral wilderness of a group of convicted sex offenders exiled to living beneath a concrete causeway in the south Florida city of Calusa, a fictionalized Miami. Banks, who has long been “our premier chronicler of the doomed and forgotten American male” (Schulman 8), focuses in Lost on a twenty-two-year-old parolee referred to throughout only as “The Kid.” While guilty and duly convicted of propositioning an underage girl online for sex, The Kid is still presented ...

Realismo Y Exasperación: Un Estudio De Los Personajes Femeninos En La Pata De La Sota Y La Nona De Roberto Cossa, Mariana Pensa

South East Coastal Conference on Languages & Literatures (SECCLL)

How To Attract African American College Students To Study Spanish: A Model For Virginia State University, Erika M. Neal

Virginias Collegiate Honors Council Conference

Being culturally aware and able to communicate with people from different regions of the world is one of the most critical skills a student of color can obtain during their educational career. Not only will a student’s perspective of the world be altered, but their market value will skyrocket by 5-10% on average according to Forbes. Being bilingual or multilingual is a skill that can be applied to any career field in today’s society. Unfortunately, many African American students have had little to no exposure to foreign languages and cultures specifically Spanish. Even for those who have had ...

El Crimen Institucional, Hannah Anderson Apr 2019

El Crimen Institucional, Hannah Anderson

Global Tides

From the beginning of human civilization, various levels of society have been clearly stratified. Larger, stronger groups, those with more resources and might, have been able to wield power over the alternate side of the spectrum. In modern society, we are able to see this through institutionalized crime. Through this research, the Chilean dictatorship in the late twentieth century will be analyzed from society’s literary and cinematic response. Through the film No directed by Pablo Larraín, and Ramón Díaz Eterovic’s novel La ciudad está triste, we can begin to understand the perspective of the institution through the lens ...
