Identity In Flux: Gender Norms And The English Language In Today’S Ukraine, Melanie Carter Apr 2019

Identity In Flux: Gender Norms And The English Language In Today’S Ukraine, Melanie Carter

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Using two concepts, cultural capital and gender as a social practice, this thesis explores intersections of the English language and gender norms and attitudes in the identity of young people in today’s Ukraine. Unlike many previous studies that have focused primarily on university students or school-age children and often used quantitative methods, this thesis offers qualitative analysis of the interviews I conducted with adults, who chose to continue to learn English. The major findings are that there are two main intersections of language and gender in Ukraine. On the one hand, traditional gender norms lead men, more than women ...

Deconstructing Patriarchal War Narratives: State Mythmaking And Documentary Prose Of Svetlana Alexievich, Molly Charles Apr 2019

Deconstructing Patriarchal War Narratives: State Mythmaking And Documentary Prose Of Svetlana Alexievich, Molly Charles

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The focus of this thesis is Svetlana Alexievich’s role in shaping new forms of emplotment and a sense of post-Soviet authenticity. I focus on her two oral histories examining war experiences under socialism—War’s Unwomanly Face (U voiny ne zhenskoe litso) and Zinky Boys (Tsinkovye mal’chiki). Alexievich’s works provide alternative histories that differ from official narratives of events, especially as represented in film, which has been a key state tool for shaping collective memory both in Soviet times and in contemporary Russia. Hence, I compare Alexievich’s books with films about World War II and the ...

The Forgotten Beauty Of The Feminine: Elena Guro’S The Little Camels Of The Sky, Virginia Woolf’S The Waves, And The Holy Grail Of The “Woman’S Sentence”, Bailey Orr May 2018

The Forgotten Beauty Of The Feminine: Elena Guro’S The Little Camels Of The Sky, Virginia Woolf’S The Waves, And The Holy Grail Of The “Woman’S Sentence”, Bailey Orr

Undergraduate Honors Theses

In her seminal 1929 feminist essay “A Room of One’s Own,” Virginia Woolf bemoans the lack of a utopian “woman’s sentence” vis-à-vis the “men’s sentence” that has dominated literature and from which no woman writer has successfully managed to free herself. Indeed, the aforementioned quotes illustrate a yearning for a nonexistent, or long-forgotten, language that expresses the linguistically inexpressible. In my thesis, I propose that both the English novelist and essayist Virginia Woolf and the Russian poet and artist Elena Guro establish the optimal creative state as independent of the burden of masculine language. In their respective ...

Alternative Notions Of Dissent: Punk Rock’S Significance In The Soviet Union And East Germany, Gabrielle E. Hibbert Apr 2017

Alternative Notions Of Dissent: Punk Rock’S Significance In The Soviet Union And East Germany, Gabrielle E. Hibbert

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The punk movement arrived in the late 1970s in the United States and United Kingdom, creating non-traditional and experimental ways in which to produce music. As the movement grew it developed a foundational ideology geared towards a more inclusive civil society. With globalization, some scholars viewed the international movements as derivative from the founding American and British movements. However, its arrival in the Soviet Union and East Germany, two regions that faced mass social and political repression, serve as two counter models to the idea of the derivational international punk movement.

Taking on the foundational ideology of the American and ...

One State, One People, One Language: A Comparison Of Chinese And Soviet Langauge Policy In The 20th Century, Rachel Faith Apr 2014

One State, One People, One Language: A Comparison Of Chinese And Soviet Langauge Policy In The 20th Century, Rachel Faith

Undergraduate Honors Theses

In line with Michael Gorham’s argument in his monograph Speaking in Soviet Tongues that recent trends in the sociology of language have come to link language with issues of power and authority, this thesis argues that the cultural administrators in the Soviet Union and the PRC approached language culture and development with the intention of using it as a means of state building. A case study of the Mongolian language and its interaction with Soviet and Chinese policy shows this process in detail.

A Person Is Born: Stalinist Myth Of The Great Family In Film Genres Of The Thaw, Alexander V. Prokhorov

Arts & Sciences Book Chapters
