Living With Tiny Aliens: The Image Of God For The Anthropocene [Table Of Contents], Adam Pryor

Astrobiology is changing how we understand meaningful human existence. As astrobiologically aware human beings, we must confront our deepened anxiety arising in the face of our own contingency—realizing how deeply tethered we are to the moments this pale blue dot exists in the universe. At the same time, our astrobiological awareness is opening a horizon to the exciting possibility of understanding our humanity in relation not only to a planet burgeoning with life, but a cosmos pregnant with living-possibilities.

Touching upon both these issues, this work provides an approach to astrobiological humanities: helping figure expressive modes by which human ...

Spiritual Gifts, Pastoring, And Gender: An Ongoing Dialogue, Boubakar Sanou Aug 2019

Spiritual Gifts, Pastoring, And Gender: An Ongoing Dialogue, Boubakar Sanou

Boubakar Sanou

"in Joel 2:28-29, god promises an innovation regarding how he will make his Spirit available in the last days ... god promises to give his Spirit and gifts without discrimination to both genders (“your sons and daughters,” and “both men and women”), young and old, from all walks of life, races, and social strata. in Acts 2:16-21, the apostle Peter quotes Joel 2:28-32 to assert that the equal filling of the Spirit for the 120 disciples (among whom were women, cf. Acts 1:14) was an element of the fulfillment of god’s promise through the prophet Joel ...

Ethnicity, Tribalism And Racism: A Global Challenge For The Christian Church And Its Mission, Boubakar Sanou

Boubakar Sanou

"Ethnic, tribal, and racial differences have been successfully used either to build up or tear down communities and neighborhoods. the purpose of this paper is to explore issues related to ethnicity, tribalism, and racism and the consequent challenge they pose to the christian church in general. Because mission always involves the crossing of ethnic and cultural boundaries, it is important that the issues related to ethnicity, tribalism, and racism be addressed and put into the biblical perspective."

Biblical Foundations Of Christian Leadership: Part 1, Stanley E. Patterson Phd Aug 2019

Biblical Foundations Of Christian Leadership: Part 1, Stanley E. Patterson Phd

Stanley E. Patterson

The Biblical foundations of leadership begin to be laid in the first chapter of Genesis and conclude with the declaration of a kingly leadership position (Rev. 1:5, 6) for God’s people in Revelation. These books and those in between reveal the deeds and misdeeds of leaders throughout. We see the massive deterioration of leadership behavior in the rebellion of Lucifer against God, but we also observe the incredible demonstration of leadership in the descent of the Messiah into the greatness of transformational service. The model demonstrated by Christ is a model of service. The followers of Jesus are ...

Beyond The Barriers Of Discipline And Culture, Erich Baumgartner Aug 2019

Beyond The Barriers Of Discipline And Culture, Erich Baumgartner

Erich Baumgartner

"culture sometimes prevents us from appreciating the very gifts offered to us, at least at first. in one place i learned a dimension of friendship that my culture does not allow me to experience easily. it happened when i was teaching Leadership Development to teachers and administrators of religious organizations in India. the first thing i noticed was their eagerness to learn in the classroom and their desire to share the beauty of their city and cultural sites with me. i enjoyed both, the classroom and the time outside the classroom. But i was unprepared for a gesture of friendship ...

The God Dimension In Leadership, Erich Baumgartner Aug 2019

The God Dimension In Leadership, Erich Baumgartner

Erich Baumgartner

One of the most challenging insights of the servant leadership approach for christian leaders is the fact that god himself chose to approach humanity that way. Christian theology has long maintained that who god is determines how he acts. Jesus dying on the cross for humanity reminds us of the inexhaustible mystery that by his very nature god is a servant. the nature of god—more specifically his Trinitarian nature—is the central paradigm of thought in this issue of JACL. Does God’s Trinitarian nature have anything to say to Christian leaders about leadership? Get ready for some meaty ...

Thirsting For God, Jon L. Dybdahl, Petr Cincala Aug 2019

Thirsting For God, Jon L. Dybdahl, Petr Cincala

Petr Činčala

"For a lot of people, particularly in Western culture, what is commonly seen are business and managerial forms of leadership. there is nothing wrong with that, but christian leadership is different. Leadership is something that needs to be practiced. Leadership needs to have a reflective side. A christian leader must take time to think, consider, and have a period of quietness rather than just making quick decisions. A christian leader must be reflective and learn to listen to god. this is a key part of spirituality."

African Christian Leadership: Realities, Opportunities, And Impact, David K. Penno Aug 2019

African Christian Leadership: Realities, Opportunities, And Impact, David K. Penno

David Penno

"African Christian Leadership is a well-organized, well-written report on some very significant research about leaders and the practice of leadership in the African church. The methodology allowed the researcher to hear from a broad spectrum of African Christians. One criticism of the study could be that a sample of church leaders and members in majority Muslim countries of North Africa were not included in the study, but this might be understandable due to the already vast scope of the project. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in leadership in the Christian context, and especially as practiced ...

Cultivating Inclusive And Peaceful Communities: Multi-Faith Sources Of Inspiration, Mary Dana Hinton Aug 2019

Cultivating Inclusive And Peaceful Communities: Multi-Faith Sources Of Inspiration, Mary Dana Hinton

The Journal of Social Encounters

Leaders, educators, clergy and laypeople engaged in the work of peacemaking must acknowledge the powerful role religion can play in the peacebuilding effort. However, we cannot limit our peacebuilding conversation to religious communities. Educational institutions also have a uniquely compelling role to play in the work of peacebuilding. This essay reviews why and how educational institutions must engage in this work; explores emerging best practices in this area; and concludes with a call to action.

Importantly, the essay highlights the importance, power and capacity of interfaith dialogue and education to support peacebuilding. Interfaith education and dialogue is not a call ...

“The People Of Aram Shall Go Into Exile”: Practical And Theological Dilemmas Of Middle Eastern Churches Since The Beginning Of The Syrian War, Wilbert Van Saane Aug 2019

“The People Of Aram Shall Go Into Exile”: Practical And Theological Dilemmas Of Middle Eastern Churches Since The Beginning Of The Syrian War, Wilbert Van Saane

The Journal of Social Encounters

This paper discusses the way in which Christian churches in the Middle East have responded to the Syrian War. It signals some practical and theological dilemmas that these churches have faced since the conflict in Syria broke out. The description of these dilemmas is primarily based on interviews with a representative sample of church leaders. Analysis of these dilemmas sheds light on the way the churches of the Middle East have contributed to peaceful resolutions of the Syrian conflict, or failed to do so. Before going into the practical and theological dilemmas of the churches, the article provides a short ...

Foundations For Muslim-Christian Dialogue And Peacemaking: Ideas About God, Faith, And Prayer, Jon Armajani Aug 2019

Foundations For Muslim-Christian Dialogue And Peacemaking: Ideas About God, Faith, And Prayer, Jon Armajani

The Journal of Social Encounters

In this essay, I discuss God, faith, and sacred texts (including the Bible, Quran, and Hadith), and some ways that they constitute foundations for peacemaking between Christians and Muslims. The essay presents my personal, ethnic, and religious background in order to contextualize the ideas which the essay analyzes, and then describes three Christian theological approaches to non-Christian religions. Those approaches are particularist (or exclusivist), inclusivist, and pluralist. The essay discusses the historical background and significance of Vatican II, which took place between 1962 and 1965, and Nostra Aetate, published in 1965. The essay then analyzes three theological principles which undergird ...

The Witness Of The Old Testament To Christ In Romans 3:21b, James D. Mitchell Aug 2019

The Witness Of The Old Testament To Christ In Romans 3:21b, James D. Mitchell

Diligence: Journal of the Liberty University Online Religion Capstone in Research and Scholarship

In Romans 3:21b, Paul argues that the Old Testament testifies to the work of Christ in manifesting the righteousness of God apart from the law. Paul's intention is to explain that the Old Testament teaches that God's righteousness if given by faith, not by works of the law, and this points to the future work of Christ. Thus, in manifesting the righteousness of God 'apart from the law' Christ accomplishes righteousness for those who have faith. In this way, there is continuity between the Gospel of Christ and the teaching of the Old Testament about achieving righteousness.

A Forgotten Light: Rediscovering The Illuminating Power Of The Holy Spirit, Veronica H. Powers Aug 2019

A Forgotten Light: Rediscovering The Illuminating Power Of The Holy Spirit, Veronica H. Powers

Diligence: Journal of the Liberty University Online Religion Capstone in Research and Scholarship

The individualistic culture of the 21st Century has seeped into the fabric of God’s people and Christianity has been reduced to an abstract mechanism whereby individuals can plug into God’s grace whenever they want God to make them feel better about their own lives. As such, Christianity has been privatized to individual renewal and, in the same way, the Holy Spirit has been restricted to the same privatization and is thus merely seen as the means by which this renewal takes place in the individual alone. Unfortunately, this privatization of Christianity results in a watered-down Biblical message ...
