Pragmatic Holiness In The Early Salvation Army: A Theology Of Holiness As Action, Terence Hale Dec 2018

Pragmatic Holiness In The Early Salvation Army: A Theology Of Holiness As Action, Terence Hale

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The notion of holiness and sanctification are central to most Protestant understandings and expressions of religious life. This thesis explores whether a pragmatic understanding of holiness, particularly in the Wesleyan-Arminian stream, can have a meaningful place in the postmodern world.

This thesis endeavours to establish a theological argument for a non-linear pragmatic understanding of holiness in the Wesleyan tradition. The theological argument is supplemented by a substantial case study of the early Salvation Army, focusing on its missiology and theology.

The argument presented is that a pragmatic understanding of sanctification, as seen in the theology and practice of the early ...

Can The Holy Grail Teach Us About Holiness?, Karen Knudson Apr 2018

Can The Holy Grail Teach Us About Holiness?, Karen Knudson

Scholar Week 2016 - present

In Malory's Tale of the Sankgreal, Galahad is presented as a knight who, as part of a magus tradition, is unique to history, with singular, supernatural traits as he completes the quest for the Holy Grail, but who, as part of another tradition, is also presented as a pilgrim in whose footsteps the earnest, Christian knight can follow and learn. Through the narrative of medieval romance, the pilgrim Galahad illuminates the path from practical wisdom, through disengagement with worldly realities, to ultimate union with Christ.

John Wesley’S Mission Of Spreading Scriptural Holiness: A Case Study In World Mission And Evangelism, Laurence W. Wood Jan 2018

John Wesley’S Mission Of Spreading Scriptural Holiness: A Case Study In World Mission And Evangelism, Laurence W. Wood

The Asbury Journal

A manual of discipline, called The Large Minutes, was given to all Methodist preachers when they joined John Wesley’s annual conference, containing this explanation: “God’s design in raising up the people called ‘Methodists’” was “to spread scriptural holiness over the land.” This paper will trace a narrow slice of the larger developing story of how John Wesley arrived at his distinction between justifying faith and full sanctifying grace. It will also serve as a case study to show that the call to justification by faith and a subsequent experience of sanctification by faith became the theme of his ...

A Wesleyan Missiological Perspective On Holiness Across Cultures, Marcus W. Dean Jan 2018

A Wesleyan Missiological Perspective On Holiness Across Cultures, Marcus W. Dean

The Asbury Journal

Missiology has focused on various aspects of contextualization and the importance of salvation, but has not dealt extensively with the biblical concept of holiness. From a Wesleyan perspective this paper looks at holiness from the lens of contextualization. A biblical support of contextualization is presented. Then the cultural factors of values—the dynamics of shame, guilt, and fear are explored— and purity are examined as starting points to contextualize the holiness message. While holiness is ultimately about ethical life and relationships, the message must be built upon culturally understandable concepts.

The Nature Of The Church's Mission In Light Of The Biblical Origin Of Social Holiness, Ban Seok Cho Jan 2018

The Nature Of The Church's Mission In Light Of The Biblical Origin Of Social Holiness, Ban Seok Cho

The Asbury Journal

This paper intends to find missiological implications that the biblical origin of social holiness has for the church’s mission. In order to accomplish this purpose, this paper, first, identifies the biblical origin of social holiness in the Old Testament narrative and its development in the New Testament narrative. Then, the relationship between the image of God in Genesis 1 and the development of social holiness in the biblical narrative will be discussed. Lastly, in light of the biblical origin of social holiness, missiological implications for the church’s mission are suggested. The thesis of this paper is that social ...

Cognitive And Emotional Processes Involved In The Experience Of Objects As Holy Or Transcendent, Lotte J. Pummerer Jan 2017

Cognitive And Emotional Processes Involved In The Experience Of Objects As Holy Or Transcendent, Lotte J. Pummerer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, attitudes about religion/spirituality have become more pluralistic (Pew Research Center, 2015a). At the same time, the number of individuals who identify themselves as nonreligious, atheist or agnostic are growing (Pew Research Center, 2015b), yet we are lacking words and research to describe their attributions of transcendence in language not bound to religious concepts. This study aims at examining both concepts – holiness and transcendence – in their similarities and differences through assessing cognitive and emotional processes involved in experiences of objects.

The study consisted of two parts with a total of 206 Christian and 52 nonreligious/atheistic/agnostic ...

Sanctification As Virtue And Mission: The Politics Of Holiness, Nathan Willowby Apr 2016

Sanctification As Virtue And Mission: The Politics Of Holiness, Nathan Willowby

Dissertations (2009 -)

This dissertation considers the political implications of the doctrine of holiness. I proceed by demonstrating the neglect of holiness in political theology, the viability of the holiness movement as an embodied witness of the political implications of the doctrine of holiness, and a biblical trajectory in Leviticus that extends into the New Testament. I describe this scriptural holiness as vocation for all of God’s people through personal formation and outward societal action to extend God’s holiness. With attention to the approaches of political theology and formation, I demonstrate that the holiness movement of the nineteenth century offers an ...

An Expansion Of Christian Holiness Using The Work Of Dallas Willard, Greg Ledbetter Jan 2016

An Expansion Of Christian Holiness Using The Work Of Dallas Willard, Greg Ledbetter

Doctor of Ministry Projects

The purpose of this project is to empower the Nazarene Church to build upon its current representation of Christian holiness into an understanding of transformation as understood by Dallas Willard so that a process of formation emerges. This project has been written in order to further stem a new conversation for the Nazarene Church regarding Christian holiness. The current dialogue can enable a guise of spiritual empowerment without bringing about the means needed for real transformation. The Church uses terms like “entire sanctification,” “growth in grace,” and “Christlikeness of Character” which lack explanation and a process of implementation.

This project ...

Renovatio: Martin Luther's Augustinian Theology Of Holiness (1515/16 And 1535-46), Phillip L. Anderas Oct 2015

Renovatio: Martin Luther's Augustinian Theology Of Holiness (1515/16 And 1535-46), Phillip L. Anderas

Dissertations (2009 -)

In this book I argue that much of mainstream Luther scholarship (and Lutheran theology) is quite wrong to think that Martin Luther downplayed, denied, derided, or just plain ignored “the holiness without which no one shall see the Lord” (Heb. 12:14). In fact, from the first inklings of his “Augustinian turn” c. 1514 to his death in 1546, Luther held and taught a robust theology of progressive renewal in holiness, carefully calibrated to the sober reality of residual sin and the astonishing gospel of grace in Jesus Christ. As it is set forth in the works that embody his ...
