Diverstiy Question, Howard Schaap Apr 2015

Diverstiy Question, Howard Schaap

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

"If I live in a small town, and all the people there are white, and I look around at my church and see that we’re all white—is that really a bad thing? Scripture’s vision from creation through Pentecost to the New Jerusalem is a diverse vision—it includes all tribes, nations, and languages and that inclusion is by design. But what do we do in small town Midwest churches about diversity?"

Music During The Reformation: Changing Times And Changing Minds, Carolyn S. Ticker Apr 2015

Music During The Reformation: Changing Times And Changing Minds, Carolyn S. Ticker

The Research and Scholarship Symposium (2013-2019)

As music developed throughout the early centuries its function changed according to the philosophies and principles governing the culture to which it belonged. This is readily apparent in the church, as one can trace the development of music in the worship service from the Medieval times to the Reformation and beyond. During the Protestant Reformation music’s role in the church changed. My presentation seeks to discover how music was used in the different branches of Protestantism of the time and how its usage compared with other sects; specifically I compared and contrasted what worship would have looked like in ...

The Interpretation Of Religious Liberty Of John Courtney Murray, S.J. And John Paul Ii, Gina K. Bugliosi Apr 2015

The Interpretation Of Religious Liberty Of John Courtney Murray, S.J. And John Paul Ii, Gina K. Bugliosi

School of Divinity Master’s Theses and Projects

This thesis looks at the perspectives of John Courtney Murray and John Paul II on the right to religious liberty particularly through their interpretations of the Second Vatican Council document “Declaration on Religious Liberty (Dignitatis Humanae) (1965).” By analyzing both Murray’s and John Paul II’s ecclesiologies, notion of the relationship between of freedom and truth, and church and state, the author explores whether or not the two thinkers interpretations of the right to religious liberty is differs fundamentally. In the end, the author concludes that too many ambiguities exist to make this claim.

The Relationship Between The Christian Music Industry And Church Worship Music, Julianne E. Ashbaugh Apr 2015

The Relationship Between The Christian Music Industry And Church Worship Music, Julianne E. Ashbaugh

Senior Honors Theses

Music has been used for millennia to worship God. Today the words worship and music are almost interchangeable in American Evangelical churches. Christian music has become a growing genre with its own radio stations, billboard charts and awards, and recording artists who exclusively sing Christian songs. Church music has also changed drastically in the past century. The musical portion of a church service used to consist of hymns led by a choir and music director who is accompanied by a piano or organ. Now many churches have a worship leader who plans and leads the musical portion of the church ...

Sustainable Church Planting: A Missional Approach, Brandon Hempel Mar 2015

Sustainable Church Planting: A Missional Approach, Brandon Hempel

Doctor of Ministry

In my experience with church planting today, there is a concern for its sustainability due to financial constraints, leadership burnout, and results. The purpose of this dissertation is to discuss the problems therein with traditional church planting and to also lay the foundations for a more sustainable church planting option through the vehicle of missional community. My intentions are for my local Wesleyan conference to benefit from this work as it has been constructed through the culmination of my research and study as well as my own practical ministry experiences as a church planting pastor. While church planting is not ...

Hartford Puritanism: Thomas Hooker, Samuel Stone, And Their Terrifying God, Baird L. Tipson Feb 2015

Hartford Puritanism: Thomas Hooker, Samuel Stone, And Their Terrifying God, Baird L. Tipson

Gettysburg College Faculty Books

Statues of Thomas Hooker and Samuel Stone grace downtown Hartford, Connecticut, but few residents are aware of the distinctive version of Puritanism that these founding ministers of Hartford's First Church carried into the Connecticut wilderness (or indeed that the city takes its name from Stone's English birthplace). Shaped by interpretations of the writings of Saint Augustine largely developed during the ministers' years at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, Hartford's church order diverged in significant ways from its counterpart in the churches of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

Hartford Puritanism argues for a new paradigm of New England Puritanism. Hartford's ...

Is The Church For Sinners Or Saints?, Neal Deroo

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

"Is church for people whose lives are already put-together, looking good and on the right path? Is church for saints—or for sinners like me?"

From Patristics To Postmodernity: Does A Message Still Exist?, Douglas Taylor Jan 2015

From Patristics To Postmodernity: Does A Message Still Exist?, Douglas Taylor

Other Graduate Scholarship

Dr. David Wheeler once advised that while not all are called to be an evangelist, all Christians are called to be evangelical. Although some may counter that postmodernity is waning, the question remains how one might be evangelical in a postmodern world. The concept that no metanarrative exists has been one of the pillars of postmodernity, and as such challenges the premise that Scripture contains an overarching story encompassing all of mankind. If Dr. Wheeler was correct, and all are called to be evangelical, then the question that would seem to require answering is how one might begin to address ...

A Strategic Marketing Plan For Community Ministries At The Toronto West Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Allan Roy Chichester Jan 2015

A Strategic Marketing Plan For Community Ministries At The Toronto West Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Allan Roy Chichester

Dissertation Projects DMin

Problem

The Toronto West Seventh-day Adventist Church is a large church that has a membership of 1,306, located in a very diverse urban community of Etobicoke North in Toronto, with variety in ethnicity, language, culture and religion. In the church’s neighborhood, there is a growing immigrant population that is currently in flux due to the constant demographic transition. This certainly poses a number of challenges for this church because there are so many varying ethnic and cultural groups that make ministering to this community very difficult. The church has tried to reach its neighbors by hosting community services ...

Women's Ordination: Why Not!?, Ray C. Roennfeldt Jan 2015

Women's Ordination: Why Not!?, Ray C. Roennfeldt

Administration and Research Book Chapters

The issue of ordination of women to ministry has been the cause of fierce debate within many Christian communions. For instance, the Anglican Church has struggled to come to terms with the issue, accepting female ordinands in some regions, but not in others. While Roman Catholicism officially holds to the view that it is inappropriate to ordain women to the priesthood, many within that faith communion would accept female priests. The US –based Southern Baptist Convention allowed ordination of women for a period, and then reversed its decision, thereby creating a continuing chaotic situation. Within Seventh-day Adventism, the debate over ...

A Program For Increasing Personal Reflection From A Biblical Perspective For Spiritual Growth At The Topeka Wanamaker Seventh-Day Adventist Church, George Mclain Goddard Jan 2015

A Program For Increasing Personal Reflection From A Biblical Perspective For Spiritual Growth At The Topeka Wanamaker Seventh-Day Adventist Church, George Mclain Goddard

Dissertation Projects DMin

Problem

Shortly after arriving as the new pastor of the Wanamaker church I noticed the appearance of spiritual immaturity and disunity among members and stress between members and leaders. People gave time and talent to the church, yet complained about each other’s actions. It seemed that misperceptions of self, others, and God among members blocked spiritual development toward the maturity and unity that Christ prayed for (John 17). The root of the problem seemed to be perceptual. A developmental program was needed that would be accessible to people across the broad spectrum of understanding and move them toward Christian ...

Hymn Lining: A Black Church Tradition With Roots In Europe, Cheryl A. Sampson Jan 2015

Hymn Lining: A Black Church Tradition With Roots In Europe, Cheryl A. Sampson

The Spectrum: A Scholars Day Journal

This paper attempts to explore the history of the sacred form of singing known as hymn-lining and to contribute to the debate surrounding its origin and influences on American music. Until recently, the segregation of our churches after emancipation made it very easy to forget that a tradition of the Black church was also a part of White churches as well. Hymn-lining was originally brought to Christians by Protestant churches in England to the colonies as early as the 16th century. At the same time, this sacred music form was also brought to Scotland. What is heard today in ...

An Investigation Of Adversity In Christian Living And Proposal For Discipleship Response, Christopher Payne Jan 2015

An Investigation Of Adversity In Christian Living And Proposal For Discipleship Response, Christopher Payne

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

With numerous ministries teaching a cultural gospel comprised of prosperity and pleasure, people have the impression that a saving faith limits personal hardships. Jesus taught his disciples the truth about hardship and how to struggle well and the Church is called to do likewise. This thesis will present five key biblical truths to equip Christians for growing their faith through personal struggle. Moreover, the project will give leaders a guide for discipling hurting church members. The author will research current and historical discipleship materials and models, examine current teachings on faith and struggle, explore relevant biblical teachings, and survey fifty ...
