Rise Of The Reconcilers: Developing A Multiethnic And Reconciling Church Through The Equipping Of Cross Cultural And Justice-Oriented Disciple Makers, Efrem Smith

Doctor of Ministry Projects

The city of Sacramento is one of the most multicultural and multiethnic cities in the United States, and yet within the last year has been facing deep racial tensions. These tensions have risen in the aftermath of the shooting death of unarmed African American Stephon Clark, at the hands of two Sacramento police officers. What is taking place in Sacramento is just part of the broader divisiveness, polarization, and dehumanization plaguing the entire United States.

Demonizing rhetoric targeted towards Black and brown people connected to the social issues of immigration, racial profiling, and religion dominates social media. Women within the ...

The Rise Of The Part-Time Worship Leader In The Mid-Size Southern Baptist Church, Donald Oren Blakeney

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this paper is to explore the prevalence of part-time, bivocational, semi-retired and volunteer worship leaders within mid-size Southern Baptist church and the need for further training and education through a denominationally-driven mentor program. The known decline in attendance and financial giving that most Southern Baptist churches have experienced has affected the moneys available to fill staffing needs and thereby require a reassessment of staff positions; the percentage of the budget allocated for staffing and continuing education. Most of these part-time worship leaders are already educated in another field and cannot allot the resources for a return to ...

Lyrics In Congregational Song: A Biblical And Historical Survey, Michael May Apr 2019

Lyrics In Congregational Song: A Biblical And Historical Survey, Michael May

Senior Honors Theses

Is there a standard as to what constitutes biblical, God-honoring congregational song lyrics? In this paper, I will seek to address this question through a review of relevant biblical principles and positions of prominent leaders throughout church history. The Bible provides a language of worship in the Psalms and includes some information regarding singing in the New Testament. Biblical principles have been applied throughout the centuries by various church fathers. The synthesis of biblical principles and historical contributions will produce a set of guidelines by which congregational song lyrics may be evaluated for the purpose of contextual application in modern ...

A Theology And Practice Of Foster Care Ministry: An Investigation Into The Effectiveness Of A Church-Based Wraparound Program For Foster Parents, Robert Wesley Griffith

Doctor of Ministry (DMin)

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a new foster parent wraparound program at Journey Church in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The need for this program was found to be in alignment with the mission of God as seen in Isaiah 1:17, Acts 6, Romans 8, and James 1:27. The New Testament Church has a history of leading the way with innovative solutions to rescue orphans, and today, the church once again has the opportunity to lead the way in foster care solutions.

When Kenosha County leaders in the judicial, legal, and social services sector were ...

Baptism Into Christ And/Or Into The Church?, Robert K. Mciver Mar 2019

Baptism Into Christ And/Or Into The Church?, Robert K. Mciver

Robert McIver

This article considers and asks the reader to think about who they are when they are in Christ? Part of a community - or an individual believer only? It examines the meaning that was attached to baptism when Christianity first adopted the practice, and then at some key biblical passages which show that in the New Testament baptism is baptism into Christ, it is the doorway into the Christian community, and that the new member receives gifts of the Spirit at baptism which are to be exercised within the community.

The Melody Of Mutuality: Integrating Theological And Psychological Principles For Egalitarian Churches To Better Support Marriages, Jennifer J. Dean-Hill

Doctor of Ministry

The dynamic combination of the unique characteristics of man and woman have been described by author Carolyn Custis James as The Blessed Alliance. Yet power struggles, misunderstandings, and unmet expectations often plague the particular struggles of modern marriages therefore creating a demand for marriage therapists and psychological modalities that seek to rectify the conflictive divide among the genders. Marriage therapy has provided tools and methods for marriages to resolve their differences, strive for a relationship of equity, and develop a culture of mutuality. These new and improved marriages attend egalitarian churches, only to discover the gender wars are still being ...

A New Koinonia: Rediscovering Community Through Online Communities Of Practice, Christal M. N. Jenkins Feb 2019

A New Koinonia: Rediscovering Community Through Online Communities Of Practice, Christal M. N. Jenkins

Doctor of Ministry

The 21st century American church sits in the crux of a paradigm shift. The shift is driven by the decline in community and the need to evolve in the manner and methods used to maintain fellowship with believers who are seeking community. The loss of community presents both a challenge and an opportunity. One way in which we, as the church, can expand our connection with one another is through incorporating communities of practice. Communities of practice consist of three main components: domain (shared interest), community, and practice. The conceptual framework of communities of practice can foster community and discipleship ...

Local Church Revitalization Through Christological Discipleship, Philip Rolsing Feb 2019

Local Church Revitalization Through Christological Discipleship, Philip Rolsing

Doctor of Ministry

Evangelical churches, in stagnation or decline, can find greater effectiveness by theologically reframing their goals and processes of formation to a Christological discipleship method based on union with Christ. Recent attempts, by Evangelical churches, to spiritually mature its members are proving to be ineffective. Data indicates Evangelical churches desire to disciple their members, however; current approaches initiate congregants into the programs of the church rather than the body of Christ.

The results indicate a growing number of people love the Lord and dislike the church. Studies affirm this to be true and identify growth in America’s religious landscape with ...

Growing Up In America's Segregated South: Reminiscences And Regrets, Mark R. Elliott Jan 2019

Growing Up In America's Segregated South: Reminiscences And Regrets, Mark R. Elliott

The Asbury Journal

In this personal essay, originally given as an address delivered at the Sakharov Center, a human rights NGO in Moscow, Russia, on June 2, 2017, the author contemplates a lifetime of experience in the Southern United States and the prejudices and racism that he saw during that time. He relates these experiences to similar issues in Russia today, adding a Christian plea for equality and fair treatment for all people by the Christian community, and also calling on the Church to stand in opposition to racism and anti-Semitism wherever it appears.

Worry In The Pews: Exploring Levels And Causes Of Worry Among Church-Goers, Jennifer Lee Dec 2018

Worry In The Pews: Exploring Levels And Causes Of Worry Among Church-Goers, Jennifer Lee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A large body of research indicates that worry, anxiety, and depression are present in the modern American psyche at increasingly high levels. Everyday worry can lead to further mental health issues, interpersonal problems, and reduced physical wellbeing and should be reduced when possible. Previous research has examined the benefits of church attendance with varied results; however, understanding the relationship between church attendance and everyday worry could be useful in reducing the effects of worry on this population.

The purpose of this quantitative study was to measure self-reported levels and causes of everyday worry among church-goers from three congregations and to ...

Church Life Cycle, Benjamin Boatman Dec 2018

Church Life Cycle, Benjamin Boatman

Masters Theses

With thousands of American churches permanently closing their doors each year, it is important to take a closer look at the churches that are in desperate need for renewal. The Body of Christ is eternal, but each church will individually display the life cycle that is observed in the human body. With so many churches in desperate need, all attempts must be made to provide suggestions that may result in their ability to continue on with the mission of Christ. The purpose of this research study is to examine the body of Christ as to its scriptural background, compare the ...

Under One Roof: A Theology Of Mercy Responding To Tragic Flooding In Minot, North Dakota, Paul A. Krueger Oct 2018

Under One Roof: A Theology Of Mercy Responding To Tragic Flooding In Minot, North Dakota, Paul A. Krueger

Doctor of Ministry Projects

God’s people can play a critical role in times of natural disaster. This ministry paper explores the theological concepts that propel a local church to action during a time of natural disaster. In addition, this paper will provide a practical framework for a local church to respond with incarnational ministry that transforms disaster-related human suffering with the tangible compassion of Christ.

Following a 2011 Level 1 natural disaster, Our Savior Lutheran Church in Minot, North Dakota, coordinated a ministry of mercy where five thousand volunteers from forty-two states changed the city’s trajectory through Christian service. Often churches do ...

A Ministry Initiative For Corporate Spiritual Formation At Lifelight Church Through Meditative Prayer, Encouragement, And Leadership, Daeyul Daniel Chung

Doctor of Ministry Projects

The purpose of this project is to develop a ministry initiative for corporate spiritual formation at Lifelight Church in San Francisco to encourage intentional spiritual growth of the community. Most critical to this project is to recognize the social element of spiritual formation. It imagines all members of the church practicing the presence of God to be formed to the likeness of Christ through meditative prayer, encouragement, and leadership as formative practices within the community.

This paper is divided into three parts. Part One examines current socio-economic and cultural shifts in San Francisco and its effects on Lifelight Church. Specifically ...

Pentecostalism Re-Imagined: Reconfiguring Pentecostalism In Twenty-First Century New Zealand, Joseph C. Mcauley Aug 2018

Pentecostalism Re-Imagined: Reconfiguring Pentecostalism In Twenty-First Century New Zealand, Joseph C. Mcauley

Doctor of Ministry Projects

The goal of this ministry-focused paper is to outline a leadership development process through which Assemblies of God pastors in New Zealand might engage in critical reflection regarding the nature of Pentecostalism. With Pentecostalism increasingly understood as a contemporary methodology of church, this project seeks to instead define Pentecostalism via six markers consistent within the Pentecostal movement over the last one hundred years – theological simplicity, pragmatic methodologies, missional energy, pneumatic expectation, ontological enchantment and relational tribalism. Each marker is deemed to be adjustable, and this project encourages a reimagining of Pentecostalism with adjustments made to Pentecostalism’s normative settings. It ...

Teleology And Narrative: Assessing Spiritual Growth At St. Andrew’S Presbyterian Church, Steven Good

Doctor of Ministry Projects

The purpose of this project is to develop a tool that invites members of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church of Newport Beach to examine their lives in light of the congregation’s mission measures and help them to determine both areas of growth and deficiency. The tool’s narrative structure provides a framework to process the circumstances of life and the variety responses to those events that move one closer to or further from one’s destination. Once participants see the narrative arc of their lives, they will be able to make distinctions between the parts of life that are ...
