Impatient Waiting, Benjamin J. Lappenga Dec 2015

Impatient Waiting, Benjamin J. Lappenga

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

"Another tendency in Christian thinking about waiting, however, is worthy of our consideration this Advent season: the perception that good Christian waiting means patience, defined as dutiful acceptance of our current suffering."

Church Ethics And Its Organizational Context: Learning From The Sex Abuse Scandal In The Catholic Church, Jean Bartunek, Mary Ann Hinsdale, James Keenan, Paul Lakeland

James G. Keenan

Paul Lakeland is a contributing author, "Understanding the Crisis in the Church", pp. 3-15. Book description: Church Ethics and Its Organizational Context is the first book to provide a broadly interdisciplinary approach to understanding the leadership crisis in the Catholic Church in the wake of the sex abuse scandal and how it was handled. Well-known scholars, religious clergy, and laymen in the trenches of church formation and leadership come together from the disciplines of organizational behavior, theology, sociology, history, and law, to foster the creation of a new code of ethics that is both ecclesial and professional. Touching on issues ...

The Living Earth: A Nineteenth-Century Latter-Day Saint Perspective, J. Michael Hunter Dec 2015

The Living Earth: A Nineteenth-Century Latter-Day Saint Perspective, J. Michael Hunter

J Michael Hunter

By studying the worldview of Mormons living in the nineteenth century, we can better understand their interpretation of nature and their relationship to it. For Mormons of that era, the earth was alive and deeply affected by the attitudes and actions of the humans living upon it. Nineteenth-century Latter-day Saints spoke frequently of the earth, its nature, and its relationship to humanity. They referred to the earth in anthropomorphic terms. It was a living orb endowed with intelligence and feelings. The earth’s life paralleled that of the humans who lived on it. So entwined were the lives of the ...

Advent: What Are You Waiting For?, Neal Deroo

"As we struggle not to be overwhelmed by the Christmas season, I wonder: Do we still have a concrete picture of what God’s faithfulness means for us? If Christmas is the beginning of God’s plan of salvation, can we say clearly what we are saved from?"

Disciples, Exorcists, And The Power Of God: Reading Acts 19:1-20 As A Literary Unit, Matthew R. Anderson Dec 2015

Disciples, Exorcists, And The Power Of God: Reading Acts 19:1-20 As A Literary Unit, Matthew R. Anderson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Scholars have read Acts 19:1-20 as a combination of stories serving different thematic interests. This has led to much confusion over several details in the text, and readings that follow this pattern miss the larger point Luke is making in this section. Acts 19:1-20 serves as the final scene in a three-part contest between believers and magicians (Acts 8:4-25; 13:4-12; 19:1-20). When one takes Acts 19:1-7 as a part of the larger narrative structure in 19:1-20, one can read the Ephesian disciples as the literary foils of the sons of Sceva. This reading ...
