La Filosofía Protestante Fundacional De Estados Unidos, Nicholas Miller, Maria Victoria Feito-Torrez Dec 2015

La Filosofía Protestante Fundacional De Estados Unidos, Nicholas Miller, Maria Victoria Feito-Torrez

Faculty Publications

Traditional understandings of the genesis of the separation of church and state rest on assumptions about “Enlightenment" and the republican ethos o f citizenship. The author does not seek to dislodge that interpretation but to augment and enrich it by recovering its cultural and discursive religious contexts, specifically the discourse of Protestant dissent. He argues that commitments by certain dissenting Protestants to the right of private judgment in matters of biblical interpretation, an outgrowth of the doctrine of the priesthood of all believers, helped promote religious disestablishment in the early modern West.

Imagery, Prayer, And Mind Wandering: Kataphatic Prayer, Martha M.O. Duah Dec 2015

Imagery, Prayer, And Mind Wandering: Kataphatic Prayer, Martha M.O. Duah

Honors Theses

Mind wandering—reduced attention to external events—during prayer could pose a problem for Christians. However, different types of prayer make different cognitive demands. Kataphatic prayer, a common type of evangelical Christian prayer, makes use of mental imagery in hopes of experiencing God in a richer sense. Because both mind wandering and kataphatic prayer require imagery, tying up imagery resources in kataphatic prayer should block mind wandering thereby improving focus. Participants in this study prayed as they normally do, viewed a visual task, or engaged in kataphatic prayer while self-monitoring for mind wandering.

Old Testament Principles Relevant To Consensual Homoerotic Activity - Part 2, Roy Gane

Faculty Publications

This, the second part of a three-part study, seeks to identify principles in the Old Testament relevant to the relationship between God’s community of faith and individuals who engage in sexual activity outside (heterosexual) marriage. My primary focus is on mutually consensual homoerotic activity as practiced within the LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) community.

B-1 Psalm 1: "From Obedience To Eternity", Maksym S. Gordiienko Oct 2015

B-1 Psalm 1: "From Obedience To Eternity", Maksym S. Gordiienko

Celebration of Research and Creative Scholarship

In my paper I analyze Psalm I. There are direct allusions in this psalm to the Pentateuch and to the book of Revelation. Thus it connects the past of Israel with eternity and glorious future of God’s people.

In poetic form the Psalmist reveals secrets of salvation. In order to understand his wisdom I make two steps. Firstly, I analyze the literary context and the genre of the psalm. I also make exegetical analysis studying the structure of the psalm, its keywords and grammatical data. Secondly, I give suggested theological interpretation.

The paper finishes with practical application as any ...

New Testament Precedents To The Practice Of Contextualization In Contemporary Mission, Boubakar Sanou Oct 2015

New Testament Precedents To The Practice Of Contextualization In Contemporary Mission, Boubakar Sanou

Faculty Publications

Although every culture needs to be transformed by the Spirit and the Word of God (Pierson, 2009:257), it is still essential that the communication of the gospel, in whatever setting, seeks to make the gospel concepts and ideas relevant to people within their own cultures (Hiebert, 1985:55). However, the need to be culturally appropriate always should be closely coupled with an in-depth analysis of the Scriptures. Because “people can only understand that which is part of their cultural frame of reference” (Rogers, 2004:65), the presentation of the gospel must be both biblically sound and culturally relevant in ...

The Chief And The Church: Reflections From A Business Educator, Annetta M. Gibson Oct 2015

The Chief And The Church: Reflections From A Business Educator, Annetta M. Gibson

Faculty Publications

In this article I distinguish between “Church” with “C” and “church” with small “c.” Recently, a committee composed of several Seventh-day Adventist church employees—some from the General Conference and some from academia—was reviewing various agenda items when the chair noted that the General Conference had hired an individual to serve as “CIO”—Chief Information Officer. Questions were immediately raised: Why is the Church using business titles such as “Chief Financial Officer”? Why the emphasis on “Chief”? Aren’t we becoming more like a business when we use business titles and terms?

LEADING WITH INTEGRITY: THE 28 ESSENTIAL LEADERSHIP STRATEGIES OF SOLOMON. By Pat Williams. Uhrichsville, OH: Barbour (2005) Hardcover, 256 pages

"Written by prolific author, motivational speaker, and basketball manager Pat Williams, Leading With Integrity begins with a brief biography of Solomon and establishes a context for his leadership scenario. Following the biographical background chapters are 28 dense chapters highlighting leadership insights from Proverbs and Ecclesiastes—one key principle per chapter. Questions following each chapter encourage personal reflection and application of the principles discussed and suggest practical steps to implement them. Particularly nice is a summary chapter that lists each of ...
