Discussing The Underlying Concerns In The Abortion Debate: Searching For An Effective Model Of Discourse, Angela Annette Chipman

Theses and Dissertations

Both pro-life and pro-choice viewpoints on the moral status of abortion have important insights to offer, but these insights can be difficult for opponents to discern and appreciate. This thesis seeks to uncover and explain some of the underlying moral convictions that inform debates on abortion. Such an inquiry, undertaken within the context of religious ethics, is important for several reasons. First, it educates the public about religious and moral beliefs that are often hidden behind popular slogans. Second, it reveals some common moral convictions, and it may point to the possibility of greater moral agreement. Third, it also reveals ...

Relational Leadership: A Study Of Organizational Health And Clergy Within The Wesleyan Church, Brian Voyght Bradford May 2011

Relational Leadership: A Study Of Organizational Health And Clergy Within The Wesleyan Church, Brian Voyght Bradford

ATS Dissertations

In many large churches (over one thousand in weekend worship attendance) today, a vast relational disconnect exists between senior pastors and pastoral staff team members. As a result, many staff pastors feel unsatisfied in their team roles and relationships as well as feeling devalued as leader. This relational deficiency frequently results in a lack of communication, trust, and belief in and with the senior leader. The staff pastor’s productivity decreases and the church ceases to be what God designed it to be—a place of relational and social connection.

The purpose of this study was to determine characteristics of ...

The Sanctification Of Friendship: Reconciling Preferential And Non-Preferential Loves In Søren Kierkegaard's Works Of Love, John Patrick Haman May 2011

The Sanctification Of Friendship: Reconciling Preferential And Non-Preferential Loves In Søren Kierkegaard's Works Of Love, John Patrick Haman

Theses and Dissertations

In Works of Love (Kjerlighedens Gjerninger) Søren Kierkegaard contrasts two seemingly opposing forms of love. One, "preferential" love, primarily includes the love found in friendships and romances. The other, "non-preferential" or "neighbor love," is associated with Christian agape love. Some interpreters believe Kierkegaard's clear support of neighbor love as the "higher" form of love reveals an incompatibility between preferential relationships, like friendship, and universal Christian love. This reading imagines an "either/or" in which a person is forced to choose between Christian faith on one hand, and friendship/erotic love on the other. The objective of this paper is ...

Leading A Polytheistic Faith To The Monotheistic God: A Study In Identifying Barriers To The Gospel In A Chinese Buddhist Community And Ways To Overcome Those Barriers, Agnes Wood

The Asbury Journal

This article is written for the purpose of exploring a way to lead a polytheistic faith, prevalent in the local Chinese Buddhist community (LCBC) in Brunei, to the reality of a monotheistic God as revealed in the Bible (1 Corinthians 8:6). This article identifies the need of a missiological package in order to lead the LCBC to Christ. The CC needs to assist the LCBC to become receptive before the core ...

Christian Zionism: Prophecy Of God Or Prophecy Self-Fulfilled?, Brooke Baker Jan 2011

Christian Zionism: Prophecy Of God Or Prophecy Self-Fulfilled?, Brooke Baker

Honors Theses

Since its creation in 1948, Israel has received criticism from around the world for its policies toward the Palestinians. However, there is one nation that has seemed to stand beside Israel consistently and unconditionally throughout its short lifetime: The United States of America. Support for Israel among American citizens is staggering. According to a 2010 Gallup poll, 63 percent of Americans sympathize more with the Israelis than with the Palestinians while 85 percent of Republicans do (Saad). We see this manifested in the political arena and in economic aid. As of 2005, the U.S. had provided Israel with nearly ...
