Aaron And The Golden Calf In The Rhetoric Of The Pentateuch, James W. Watts Oct 2011

Aaron And The Golden Calf In The Rhetoric Of The Pentateuch, James W. Watts

Religion

In the Pentateuch, the contrast between law and narrative, or more precisely, ritual instructions and ritual narrative, is nowhere more stark than in the relationship between the Golden Calf story (Exod 32-34) and the instructions for building the Tabernacle (Exod 25-31, 35-40). The former vilifies Aaron by placing him at the center of the idolatrous event while the latter celebrates Aaron and his sons as divinely consecrated priests. Though source criticism has long since distinguished the authors of these accounts, it does not explain the intentions behind a literary juxtaposition that is too stark to be anything but intentional. Nor ...

The Mosaic Law In Christian Perspective, David A. Skeel Jr., Tremper Longman Jun 2011

The Mosaic Law In Christian Perspective, David A. Skeel Jr., Tremper Longman

Faculty Scholarship at Penn Law

When Jesus spoke of fulfilling the law and the prophets, he was referring to the Mosaic law, nearly all of which is in the four books we consider in this Article: Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. In an effort to discern the Mosaic law’s guidance for contemporary secular law, we first place it in covenantal perspective and identify three of its key concerns: God’s nature, as revealed in Scripture; the nature of Israel; and the role of the land. After summarizing the regulation in the four books under consideration and noting a few of its characteristics, we conclude ...

Sensible, Prudent & Shrewd: Building Blocks For A Theology Of Efficiency, Michael E. Cafferky

Faculty Works

This paper examines operational efficiency from a biblical theology perspective. The paper describes operational efficiency in contemporary terms and considers six categories of constraints on efficiency. In pursuing its purpose the paper reviews six relevant biblical themes including: God‘s character, creation, covenant, shalom, blessing, and fruitfulness. Five biblical values and virtues describe how efficiency is to be achieved: truth, wisdom, prudence, usefulness, and stewardship. The biblical theme of agricultural yield provides an illustration of the instrumental virtues and values by which workers achieve and measure efficiency.

Is The Modern Parachurch A Reflection Of Misguided Ecclesiology?, Joshua A. Haywood May 2011

Is The Modern Parachurch A Reflection Of Misguided Ecclesiology?, Joshua A. Haywood

Senior Honors Theses

In light of the present situation of Christianity, it has become necessary to examine the biblical basis for ministries outside the normal parameters of the Church. One of the biggest problems with addressing this issue is that of defining the parachurch. An accurate and sufficient definition for what constitutes a parachurch ministry requires an investigation into biblical ecclesiology. The relationship between parachurch ministries and the local and universal church must be established in a time when the lines between them are blurred. Some basic principles need to be established which describe what constitutes a biblical reason for the creation of ...

The purpose of this dissertation was to help young pastors improve their preaching. The literature review examined the theological foundation of becoming more biblically accurate in preaching. Biblical preaching is detailed by images and metaphors that help any minister to understand the call, message, authority, and practice of biblical preaching. The findings suggest that during the study a shift occurred within a group of young pastors from Baptist Community in Arad, Romania. Among the findings was ...

Inhabiting The Garden: Bible, Theology And Mission, Lawson G. Stone Jan 2011

Inhabiting The Garden: Bible, Theology And Mission, Lawson G. Stone

The Asbury Journal

This essay explores the role of biblical exegesis in the task of Christian theology and in the contemporary global mission of the church from the perspective of an Old Testament scholar. It poses the question what a biblical exegesis would look like that was consistently Christian in its assumptions while, at the same time, honest and competent in dealing with the phenomena of the biblical text. Using the exegesis of the early centuries of the church as a case study, the essay develops insights into the role of serious biblical study in empowering the early church's vibrant expansion through ...

The Journey To Jesus: John 4:19-26, Andrew Hagen Jan 2011

The Journey To Jesus: John 4:19-26, Andrew Hagen

Global Tides

John 4:19-26 is a part of Jesus’ conversation with the Samaritan woman at the well. This portion of the conversation includes Jesus’ first revelation of himself as the Messiah and the only way to the Father in what Eric John Wyckoff calls an “astonishing self-revelation unparalleled in its explicitness.” Jesus’ later claims develop these ideas further (John 8:24, 28, 58; 13:19; 18:5) but this scene serves to not only reveal Jesus as the Messiah-Christ but also to demonstrate how Jesus transcends all the expectations which are associated with the title.

Christian Zionism: Prophecy Of God Or Prophecy Self-Fulfilled?, Brooke Baker

Honors Theses

Since its creation in 1948, Israel has received criticism from around the world for its policies toward the Palestinians. However, there is one nation that has seemed to stand beside Israel consistently and unconditionally throughout its short lifetime: The United States of America. Support for Israel among American citizens is staggering. According to a 2010 Gallup poll, 63 percent of Americans sympathize more with the Israelis than with the Palestinians while 85 percent of Republicans do (Saad). We see this manifested in the political arena and in economic aid. As of 2005, the U.S. had provided Israel with nearly ...
