'A Chinese Fish Thinks About Chinese Water': The Cultural Engagement Of Christian Theology In The Emerging Sin-Christian Context, Timothy Lee Yii Lau Dec 2008

'A Chinese Fish Thinks About Chinese Water': The Cultural Engagement Of Christian Theology In The Emerging Sin-Christian Context, Timothy Lee Yii Lau

Theses

Since the 1990s there has been a rising tide of discussion and debate on the nature and task of an emerging Sino-Christian theology. In 1995, Liu Xiaofeng responded by calling for a renewed attempt to reconstruct a Sino-Christian theology in close connection to its contemporary socio-cultural-political context. Though Liu's project of "Cultural Christians" is problematic, his proposal regarding the future path of the Sino-Christian theology has opened up a number of specific issues needing clarification. These include the goals, methods, and form of Sino-Christian theology, and the way it might effectively engage the competing Chinese thought-systems informing culture and ...

Buddha For Beginners, Stephen Asma Dec 2008

Buddha For Beginners, Stephen Asma

Stephen T Asma

Originally published by Writers and Readers in 1998, this is an iconoclastic, illustrated romp through the life of the Buddha both a credible exploration of his life and teachings and an entertaining introduction to the philosophy of Buddhism.

Many Westerners know about the meditation practices of Buddhism, but few understand the Buddha's philosophical teachings. This book puts the teachings (dharma) in their proper context and unravels some of the more dense knots of Buddha's thinking. And it does all this while entertaining the reader with humorous illustrations and pop-culture sensibility. This primer, constructed like a graphic novel, cuts ...

The Greek Word "Porneia" In The Matthean Exception Clauses, Philip R. Leineweber Dec 2008

The Greek Word "Porneia" In The Matthean Exception Clauses, Philip R. Leineweber

Senior Honors Theses

Matthew 5:32 and 19:9 present an interesting exegetical discussion concerning the acceptability and permissibility of divorce. These verses provoke interest because of their inclusion of an exception clause seemingly allowing for a permissible divorce. The verses state the unlawfulness of divorce “except in the case of porneia.” Porneia is the word around which this discussion revolves and its meaning differs vastly depending upon the interpreter. The word is interpreted specifically as adultery during the betrothal period and also as sexual promiscuity and immorality on the other. This thesis explains both views and then seeks to offer all relevant ...

"In the year of our Lord 1535, at 5:00 on Tuesday morning, June 22nd, the Lieutenant of the Tower of London awoke the sleeping John Fisher to deliver a message from King Henry VIII: the Bishop of Rochester was to be put to death that day before noon. Because the recently created Cardinal did not recognize Henry’s claim to be supreme head of the Church in England nor the validity of his marriage to Anne Boleyn, John Fisher was judged a traitor. In late May ...

Historical Legacy Of Jesuits In China, Lawrence Fouraker

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"What is the meaning today of the missionary activities of the Society of Jesus in China? The attempt by members of the Society of Jesus to convert Chinese to Christianity from the late-16th to early-18th centuries was part of the Catholic Reformation’s missionary expansion around the world. Was the Jesuit mission also part and parcel of an expansionist Western imperialism, or did it rather reflect a humanistic universalism?2 Obviously, there are some aspects of both, but on balance, the conversion of Chinese in this ...

The Structure Of The Gospel Of Mark: Revisiting The Implications Of Repetition And Characterization, Gregory Michael Dec 2008

The Structure Of The Gospel Of Mark: Revisiting The Implications Of Repetition And Characterization, Gregory Michael

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The search for a distinctive and coherent structure to the Gospel of Mark has long been a challenge for scholarship. While denying redaction and narrative criticism's slavish adherence to their methodology, this thesis utilizes repetition and characterization to assess the matter of Markan structure. Key points of repetition addressed within the text are repetition of words and phrases, forms, and thematic items. The discussion of words and phrases highlight: θάλασσα, πάλιν, εἰς π̍εραν, ἐν τ̂ηὁσ̂ω, and Jewish leaders. The forms addressed are call narratives, exorcisms, and passion predictions. The thesis presents six key repeated ...

Social Psychology Of Religion, Jessica M. Gifford

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"John Polkinghorne’s description of God offers an insight into what supports his belief in God. Each religion has a specific description of who God is understood to be. Polkinghorne believes that God must have a purpose, and a mind with which to ponder this purpose and make decisions. While we may not be clear on what this purpose is and to what extent this mind reaches, Polkinghorne believes that the universe would not otherwise exist without the presence of God. He does not explain why God’s ...

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"We live in a changing, complex world. We are a society that is on the go, a society that thinks more is always better, one in which technology continues to evolve. We dine out more; up to 50 percent of the money that we spend on food is spent dining out. Most families don’t have the classic home cooked meal where all family members eat at the same time. It seems like there is so much to do and so little time to do it."

"After reading the recovered excerpts from the Gospel of Mary Magdalene, I was intrigued by several of the statements and ideas that the text presents. The Relationship Between Ministry Praxis And Spiritual Development Milestones In The Lives Of Children, Leon Marcel Blanchette Jr. Dec 2008

The Relationship Between Ministry Praxis And Spiritual Development Milestones In The Lives Of Children, Leon Marcel Blanchette Jr.

Faculty Scholarship – Christian Education

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the children‘s ministry praxis in Nazarene churches and four significant spiritual milestones in the lives of Nazarene children. A mixed method study was used to obtain statistical, quantitative results from the population and then followed up with two small groups to explore those results in more depth through personal interviews. This study compares four quadrants of children’s spirituality, the Pragmatic-Participatory Model, Media-Driven Active-Engagement Model, Instructional-Analytic Model, and the Contemplative-Reflective Model. A quadrant is one of four categories that best describes a children‘s pastor‘s ministry praxis ...
