Made, Not Born: The Church As Baptismal, Frank Quinn Dec 1981

Made, Not Born: The Church As Baptismal, Frank Quinn

Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers

(excerpt)

An editorial in a recent issue of Time magazine notes that the real failures of the past decade have been future planners. Changing scripture slightly, the editorial states: The decade just ended left behind a great many fresh reminders of why prophets have always had difficulty winning honor on their own turf. 1 The decade just ended differed radically from the social, political and economic predictions made for it. The consequence of such failure is that only the fool plays the prophet in the 1980's. So, taking a lesson from the secular sphere, you will understand why I ...

Prolegomena To The Study Of Hegel's Philosophy Of Religion, Alan Borcherding Dec 1981

Prolegomena To The Study Of Hegel's Philosophy Of Religion, Alan Borcherding

Master of Divinity Thesis

This introduction is designed to aid a person with the desire to study the Hegelian philosophy of religion; it is not itself an introduction to his philosophy of religion (this ought to be obvious from the relative length of the early chapters and the relative brevity of the last two chapter0. It is hoped that three particular enemies of the reader in Hegel's philosophy can be overcome in this paper: the tracing of origins, the identification of main principles, and the vast literature.

The Interpretation Of The Olivet Discourse By Ellen G. White And Her Contemporaries, Raymond Henry Sills Dec 1981

The Interpretation Of The Olivet Discourse By Ellen G. White And Her Contemporaries, Raymond Henry Sills

Theses Non-Avondale

The purpose of this thesis is to define the methods Ellen White employed in interpreting the Olivet Discourse; and further to review the exposition that grew out of these methods. Once these methods have been identified and the exposition defined, these will then be contrasted and compared with other writers. These writers have been classified under four headings: the Millerite lecturers; Seventh-day Adventist writers; non-Seventh-day Adventist authors whose books were in her libraries, and finally non-Seventh-day Adventist authors whose books were not in her libraries.

Christian Initiation: Development, Dismemberment, Reintegration, Geoffrey Wainwright

Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers

(excerpt)

Worshipers tend to assume that the patterns of worship that they know have been practiced since time immemorial. A little familiarity with liturgical history soon reveals that that is not in fact the case. You in your churches, with your new Lutheran Book of Worship (1978), have inevitably been introduced to some liturgical history as you had to come to terms with new things that were really old things.

Developing Pastoral Counseling In The Missionary Church Of Brazil Through The Oms International, Darrell Wayne Mishler Dec 1981

Developing Pastoral Counseling In The Missionary Church Of Brazil Through The Oms International, Darrell Wayne Mishler

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The local pastor will have ample opportunity to counsel his flock. This, simply, is a fact. People will bring their problems to him, and the well-being of his ministry-not to mention himself--may depend on the pastor's management of these important times. The "people-helper"-oriented pastor will probably welcome this ministry, even though it has the potential of being a stressful form of shepherding. A goal for this project is to facilitate the development of the pastoral counseling role of the Brazilian local pastor, making him as totally effective a minister as possible. For, to quote Dr. Wayne Oates, "... (the ...

St. Paul's Apostolic Authority And His First Letter To The Corinthians, Robert Weinhold Nov 1981

St. Paul's Apostolic Authority And His First Letter To The Corinthians, Robert Weinhold

Master of Divinity Thesis

The search for an authoritative word from God has been at the heart and center of man's struggle for existence since the beginning of time. God, in His wisdom, has seen fit to provide that authoritative word through many messengers in the course of history. Abraham, Moses, Samuel, Isaiah and Malachi were all messengers, mediators, of God's sacred will to his chosen and beloved people, Israel. With the sending of his own Son, God sent the ultimate messenger in the perfect God-Man, Jesus. Even though Jesus spoke God's message clearly and perfectly, man still needed guidance in ...

Christian Growth Groups, Douglas R. Martin Nov 1981

Christian Growth Groups, Douglas R. Martin

Theses Non-Avondale

Problem: Members of the larger churches often are deprived of the advantages of close fellowship. Consequently, they either remain in the church with social needs unfulfilled, or they seek fulfilment outside the Adventist church in ways that may conflict with a Christian lifestyle. Many withdraw from the church permanently. A Christian growth group was formed at Hillview Seventh-day Adventist Church with this problem in mind.

A Model For Church Growth Groups, Raymond Bruce Newman Nov 1981

A Model For Church Growth Groups, Raymond Bruce Newman

Theses Non-Avondale

Cell groups are a feature of the most rapidly growing churches in Australia. Cell groups will probably lead to church growth for the Seventh-day Adventist Church. For this reason it has been seen as significant to develop and evaluate a model for integrating Cell Groups, renamed as Church Growth Groups, into the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Backsliding And Apostasy: A Localized Study In Suburban Newcastle, Neil William Watts Nov 1981

Backsliding And Apostasy: A Localized Study In Suburban Newcastle, Neil William Watts

Theses Non-Avondale

This project was an attempt to assess the causes of backsliding from a local church and to implement procedures to reclaim former members. It was the writer's intention, after researching the Bible and other literature on the subject of backsliding and the reclamation of backsliders, to find from a group of such people why they left the church and then to work with the church in designing a ministry plan to reclaim as many former members as possible.
