In Buddhism, monks and nuns or bhikkhu and bhikkhuni in Pali refer to those who leave their homes to practices Buddhism and live ascetic lives with other monks or nuns. Monks and nuns play important roles in Buddhism, because they are considered to be the successors of the Buddha dharma after the death of the Sakyamuni Buddha and therefore are responsible for teaching and passing on the Buddha dharma.

Female Genital Mutilation: Islamic Roots Or Culture Conflated?, Mazin E. Khalil

Senior Theses and Projects

Despite the fact that circumcision can be traced to various pre-Islamic societies, female genital mutilation is commonly associated with Islam. This thesis investigates female genital mutilation in Sudan. In the first part, I investigate the reasons for female genital mutilation in Sudan and the reasons for its continued occurrence. In the second part, I analyze the narrative of Ayaan Hirsi Ali and her personal account as it relates to female genital mutilation. How American Women Are Changing Buddhism, Cassie Goode Apr 2015

How American Women Are Changing Buddhism, Cassie Goode

Senior Theses and Projects

In my thesis I argued that American women are changing Buddhism by incorporating Western ideas into the tradition, and that Buddhism changes Americans by giving them modern principles and teachings. I gave descriptions of eight women, half ordained nuns and half Buddhist teachers, to show what they are doing to change and “Americanize” the religion. In the final chapter, I gave abortion as a case study to how Buddhist principles are being used to help American women cope with an abortion. This except is from the chapter on abortion.

Homosexuality And The Bible: A Reconciliation, Emma Belluomo Apr 2013

Homosexuality And The Bible: A Reconciliation, Emma Belluomo

Senior Theses and Projects

For centuries, the Bible has been used as a source of authority on a range of controversial issues, informing Christian perspectives on everything from the legality of slavery to abortion. In recent years, the issue of homosexuality has been extremely contentious in the Christian community, with many arguing a definitively negative position towards the rights of homosexuals from a basis of a few biblical passages. One comes to realize that the references to homosexual behavior are ambiguous at best, and most often are used as part of a greater rhetorical argument rather than focusing on the morality of homosexual behavior ...

The Spirituality Of Food And Nutrition: A Critique Of The United States' Food Practices Through An Analysis Of Three Asian Religions And Philosophies, Kiley G. Hagerty

Senior Theses and Projects

There is no question that the United States is a country that is currently faced with serious health epidemics, such as hypertension and diabetes, associated with being overweight and obese. It has been the assumption of the government and the public that the large food corporations are to blame for the country’s poor health. However, it is too simplistic to believe that tighter regulations upon corporations would alone lead to improved health. There needs to be a change at the individual level, and of the practices of most of the country’s citizens. Through an analysis of three Asian ...

A Discussion Of The Theological Implications Of Free Will In The Biblical Story Of The Exodus From Egypt, Michelle Okun Apr 2012

A Discussion Of The Theological Implications Of Free Will In The Biblical Story Of The Exodus From Egypt, Michelle Okun

Senior Theses and Projects

The exploration of free will and divine providence was a focus of medieval, specifically Jewish, philosophers. Three men wrote extensively about the subject: Philo of Alexandria, Saadia Gaon, and Moses Maimonides. All argued through textual proof and critical thinking that God was innocent and just throughout the occurences described in the Exodus from Egypt. Each man used principles they held to be true and textual evidence to defend God, prove the continued existence of free will, and the ability for divine providence to exist without interfering with free will. Through an exploration of the story of Creation, mind and knowledge ...

Gaming With God: A Case For The Study Of Religion In Video Games, Vander I. Corliss May 2011

Gaming With God: A Case For The Study Of Religion In Video Games, Vander I. Corliss

Senior Theses and Projects

This study is an analysis of religion in video games and makes the case that more formal work needs to be done on the subject. Despite the prevalence of video games in society today, little formal research has been done on the subject of religion in video games. Video games give the audience a level of interactivity that other forms of entertainment cannot provide. Religion has been at odds with the entertainment industry for decades and as a new form of entertainment media, video games have been using religion for some time. Most often it is used in the story ...
