Qohelet's Twists And Turns, Michael Carasik Dec 2003

Qohelet's Twists And Turns, Michael Carasik

Departmental Papers (Jewish Studies)

When Elias Bickerman wrote a little volume called Four Strange Books of the Bible, Ecclesiastes was an easy choice for inclusion. As he remarks, "Ecclesiastes has no known antecedents or spiritual posterity in Jewish thought."¹ This is an exaggeration,² but even Qohelet's successors, the Jewish sages of the rabbinic period, found Ecclesiastes questionably biblical. Thus in Leviticus Rabbah 28:1, R. Benjamin B. Levi remarks, "They sought to suppress Ecclesiastes, for they found in it matters that tend toward the heretical."³ The purpose of this article is to highlight what I think is a particularly significant ...

Factors That Contributed To The Growth Of The Kenya Assemblies Of God Church: An Analysis Of Multi-Paradigms, Florence Juma, J. M. Vorster

Luther Faculty Publications

Many churches in Africa lack recorded history for various reasons, such as scarcity of funds and/or scholars in the field of church history (cf. Kalu, 1993:166ff). This situation is more prevalent among the Pentecostal movements which, initially and for genuine reasons, were anti-intellectualist and emphasized ministry alone (Clark & Lederle et al, 1983:41; McNamee, 1974:27; and Hollenweger). Another possible explanation results from the fact that these churches are relatively young compared to their counterpart mainline churches. This lack of recorded history poses a hindrance to any efforts in evaluating the growth of such churches.

There is an immediate need to understand the ...

Review Of Empty Room With Light, Matthew Roth Dec 2003

Review Of Empty Room With Light, Matthew Roth

English Faculty Scholarship

The poems in Ann Hostetler's first collection, Empty Room with Light, reveal the world through the prism of everyday, domestic affairs. Hostetler, a trained visual artist and a professor of Creative Writing at Goshen College, arranges her deceptively simple poems with painterly care; as with a fine still life, the best poems here seem to be lit from within, their forms emerging not from the cunning of the artist, but from an act of attention that allows the people and objects to speak for themselves.

From Biology To Consciousness To Morality, Ursula Goodenough, Terrence W. Deacon Dec 2003

From Biology To Consciousness To Morality, Ursula Goodenough, Terrence W. Deacon

Biology Faculty Publications & Presentations

Social animals are provisioned with prosocial orientations that operate to transcend self-interest. Morality, as used here, describes human versions of such orientations. We explore the evolutionary antecedents of morality in the context of emergentism, giving considerable attention to the biological traits that undergird awareness and our emergent human forms of mind. We suggest that our moral frames of mind emerge from our primate prosocial capacities, transfigured and valenced by our symbolic languages, cultures, and religions.

Portions of this article were given by Deacon in a paper at the forty-ninth annual conference of IRAS, “Is Nature Enough? The Thirst for Transcendence ...

Religion, Science, And Evolution: Paul Tillich's Fourth Way, Richard Grigg Dec 2003

Religion, Science, And Evolution: Paul Tillich's Fourth Way, Richard Grigg

Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

In his book God After Darwin John Haught provides a useful categorization of theological approaches to evolution: some theologians actively oppose Darwinian evolution, another group maintains that science and religion have nothing to say to one another, and a third seeks to engage evolution. Haught wishes to pursue the third way. But many theological attempts to talk about divine action in the world, including divine involvement in the process of evolution, run afoul of the scientific principle of the conservation of matter-energy. Haught's reliance on the now-familiar notion that information can have causal efficacy does not in fact escape ...

Religion And Education: Walking The Line In Public Schools, Joanne M. Marshall Nov 2003

Religion And Education: Walking The Line In Public Schools, Joanne M. Marshall

Education Publications

In recent years religion has moved out of the private sphere and into the public square. Whether it’s the invocation for God to bless America, the sudden interest in Islam, or the tale of Alabama Judge Roy Moore and the Ten Commandments, religion and its impact on our world have become less private and more public. Therefore, teachers who wish to involve their students with the world around them must also address religious topics in their classrooms.

Religion Vs. Spirituality: A Contemporary Conundrum, Sandra Marie Schneiders Oct 2003

Religion Vs. Spirituality: A Contemporary Conundrum, Sandra Marie Schneiders

Jesuit School of Theology

The problem with which this essay is concerned is perhaps peculiar to contemporary first world western culture. It is, like many of our cultural problems such as inclusivity, addictions, and family breakdown, ironically a product, to a large extent, of our unprecedented abundance, leisure, and freedom. The problem is the relationship between religion and spirituality.

Preaching The David Story, Rolf A. Jacobson Oct 2003

Preaching The David Story, Rolf A. Jacobson

Faculty Publications

The David story is the longest and most complete biblical treatment of any one human life. This allows the story to speak to many stages of the faith journey. The story is not fully present in the pericopes, but the preacher can choose to use this material in a sermon series to address the spiritual and moral contexts of our age.

Was The Chronicler A Spin Doctor?: David In The Books Of Chronicles, Mark A. Throntveit

Faculty Publications

Yes, the Chronicler was a spin doctor—but a necessary one. He used the David story to address the needs of his postexilic community who questioned the value of God’s old promises to David in this new time of Persian domination, without a king, worshiping in a temple that was the mere shadow of Solomon’s glorious edifice.

Ancient Egyptian Religion On The Silver Screen: Modern Anxieties About Race, Ethnicity, And Religion, Caroline T. Schroeder

College of the Pacific Faculty Articles

This essay examines the depiction of religion, race, and ethnicity in four films: The Mummy, Stargate, The Ten Commandments, and Prince of Egypt. Each film - explicitly or implicitly, deliberately or not - uses ancient Egyptian religion as a foil to dramatize American concerns about race and ethnicity. The foil is the mysterious, and often false, religiosity of an often Orientalized religious and ethnic "other."

Clergy Sexual Abuse And The Catholic Church: What Do We Know And Where Do We Need To Go?, Thomas G. Plante Oct 2003

Clergy Sexual Abuse And The Catholic Church: What Do We Know And Where Do We Need To Go?, Thomas G. Plante

Psychology

Few recent topics have received the kind of media attention, heated debate, and discussion than the topic of sex-offending clergy, their victims, and supervisors. It is a story about too many bishops (and priests) behaving badly when they are purported to be the moral, religious, and ethical leaders of society. It is a remarkable story. However, it is a complex story that has had little scholarship and discourse driven by thoughtfulness, civility, and reason.
