Adam And Eve In History: A Theological Necessity, Thomas White

Thomas White, Ph.D.

This article is an excerpt from Thomas White’s September 16, 2016, presentation during the “In the Beginning: Creation and Your Biblical Worldview” conference September 15–16. During the first half of White’s presentation, he laid the biblical foundation for the theological necessity of Adam and Eve, highlighting texts throughout the Old and New Testaments in order to display the comprehensive witness of Scripture to a historic Adam and Eve. This excerpt provides the implications of this biblical foundation. Listen to his full remarks at cedarville.edu/creation.

La Teología De La Creación Según Martín Lutero En Sus Lecciones Sobre El Génesis, Denis Kaiser Dec 2015

La Teología De La Creación Según Martín Lutero En Sus Lecciones Sobre El Génesis, Denis Kaiser

Denis Kaiser

A Reinvestigation Of "The Creation Of Woman" From A Hebraic Viewpoint, Barry Fike Dec 2014

A Reinvestigation Of "The Creation Of Woman" From A Hebraic Viewpoint, Barry Fike

Barry D. Fike

This paper looks at the role of women in society and the church while investigating the original creation story in Hebrew without the sociological intervention and gross misinterpretation of the text by modern man so often used to show the "superiority" of men because of the "after thought" in the creation of woman. Because of the misinterpretation of ideas and words, such as submissive and helpmeet used in the Biblical text, many men claim "superiority" over women in a spiritual sense when nothing is further from the truth.

Canon As An Act Of Creation: Giorgio Agamben And The Extended Logic Of The Messianic, Colby Dickinson Aug 2013

Canon As An Act Of Creation: Giorgio Agamben And The Extended Logic Of The Messianic, Colby Dickinson

Colby Dickinson

The ‘messianic’ is one of philosophy’s most appropriated religious terms, yet one apparently now bereft of its historical religious particularity. This essay thus explores a genealogical approach to the ‘messianic’ which might prove helpful in uncovering the reasons for this transformation from the theological to the philosophical, and what role, if any, theology still has in determining the meaning and usage of this term. Accordingly, this essay traces the term through the work of Walter Benjamin, Jacques Derrida and Giorgio Agamben. This development is made against the backdrop of another religious term which indirectly pervades the work of all ...

A Systems View Of Life: A Grander Order In The Complexity Of Life, Steven M. Gollmer Feb 2013

A Systems View Of Life: A Grander Order In The Complexity Of Life, Steven M. Gollmer

Steven M. Gollmer, Ph.D.

Design has been a key and yet elusive word in the areas of science and philosophy for many years. It seemed to reach its apex in 1802 with Paley’s Natural Theology. However, in the wake of Darwin’s Origin the recognition of design as part of a biological research paradigm has been greatly undermined. Design as expressed in Natural Theology is equivalent to that of a highly tuned machine. The parts are idealized and their relationships are synchronized and static. Although we see design of this type in nature, it has limitations when dealing with dynamic, complex interactions between ...

Modeling Holistic Behavior Of Biological Systems For Analysis By Systems Theory, Steven M. Gollmer Feb 2013

Modeling Holistic Behavior Of Biological Systems For Analysis By Systems Theory, Steven M. Gollmer

Steven M. Gollmer, Ph.D.

Due to the complexity of biological systems it is not possible to capture the richness of their interactions by purely studying the individual parts. Only a subset of all possible interactions between individual parts results in functional behavior. This restriction of functional possibilities is sometimes described as an emergent property of the system and emphasizes a holistic approach to the study of biological systems.

By using concepts from systems theory a systemic approach to modeling biological systems is possible. This approach is currently used successfully in such areas as niche theory and organism biology. This presentation looks at a framework ...

How Did The Universe Begin?, Jordan P. Ballard

Jordan P Ballard

The origin of the universe is one of the important and perplexing subjects known to mankind. The subject is important because of its implications for mankind’s place in the universe, and it is perplexing because of the vastness and complexity of everything in the universe, from the distant galaxies to the virtual particles of the quantum vacuum. Two basic questions about the origin of the universe must be addressed. First is the question, “Did the universe have a beginning?” which can be answered by utilizing three sources of information: philosophy, science, and theology. The second question is, “How did ...

Worship, The Bond Between Time/Space And Eternity, Lawrence E. Frizzell

Reverend Lawrence E. Frizzell, S.T.L., S.S.L., D.Phil.

Dr. Kenneth Schmitz's review of philosophical insights into language and writing is necessarily focused on the world of Greece and Rome. It would be valuable to have scholars immersed in the Hebrew language and traditional Jewish culture to reflect upon the same issues. At a conference on the trivium and quadrivium in Medieval Europe, Dean Arthur Hyman of Yeshiva University was asked to comment. His response was brief: "This was not the Jewish approach."
Recalling the genius and limitations of a language to convey insights into the meaning of life and its mysteries, we acknowledge the role of translation ...
