The Magnificat: Sources And Themes, Lawrence E. Frizzell D.Phil.

Reverend Lawrence E. Frizzell, S.T.L., S.S.L., D.Phil.

In the 1961 meeting of this Society, the Basilian biblical scholar, James Terence Forestell, reflected upon the biblical background of the Magnificat. He declared that it is not merely a patchwork quilt of Old Testament texts. "The Magnificat is a new hymn with its own unity of inspiration, but the words do reflect a whole stream of O.T. piety, which is not to be isolated in a few texts." He studied the background possibilities in the Jewish Scriptures for every significant term in the hymn.

I will stand with him against the assessment of the Jesuit Scripture scholar, Joseph ...

A Fresh Approach To Jewish-Christian Studies, Asher Finkel Dec 1994

A Fresh Approach To Jewish-Christian Studies, Asher Finkel

Rabbi Asher Finkel, Ph.D.

A fresh attitude towards Judaism has prevailed in the study of the common roots with Christianity and the subsequent relational development of the respective religious communities since the Vatican II and the publication of Guidelines and Suggestions for the Implementing the Conciliar Declaration "Nostra Aetate." This account of the scholarly pursuit of Jewish Christian studies shows how cautious we must be in the examination of each period. Such is the invitation extended to all scholars who seek to enter the new millennium in a joint effort to explore the dynamics of a common background.

Mary And The Biblical Heritage, Lawrence E. Frizzell D.Phil. Dec 1994

Mary And The Biblical Heritage, Lawrence E. Frizzell D.Phil.

Reverend Lawrence E. Frizzell, S.T.L., S.S.L., D.Phil.

Throughout the ages, the Church and her teachers often acknowledged that the fourfold Gospel offers only a limited number of passages that feature the Mother of Jesus. Undaunted, the great doctors of the early Church and the theologians of the Middle Ages found abundant resources for their meditation concerning Mary in the Jewish Scriptures and literature related to the New Testament. The theological premise that God is the principal author of the entire Bible led them to find hints and images of the Messiah everywhere. Recognizing that the link of Jesus to the people of Israel is Mary, his Mother ...

Luther On Church Unity : The Commentary On Galatians (1535), Lawrence Porter Dec 1980

Luther On Church Unity : The Commentary On Galatians (1535), Lawrence Porter

Rev. Lawrence B. Porter, Ph.D

This article promotes ecumenical discussion of the eclesiological question: what structures are required to preserve the values of freedom and accountability in matters of faith? it is the author's contention that freedom and accountability are essential elements in the experience of Christian faith but are not easily reconciled; indeed, in the history of the churches, one element has often been sacrificed to the other. As illustration, the author offers a study of these themes in Luther's 1535 Commentary and concludes that both the church of Rome and the churches of the Reformation would do well to reconsider their ...

Intimacy And Human Sexuality : A Challenge To The Consensus On Contraception., Lawrence Porter Dec 1979

Intimacy And Human Sexuality : A Challenge To The Consensus On Contraception., Lawrence Porter

Rev. Lawrence B. Porter, Ph.D

This essay expands upon the existentialist analysis of contemporary American sexual mores presented in Rollo May's Love and Will (1969), specifically the section of that work entitled "Contraceptives and the tragic". The author accepts May's analysis of the ambiguous psychological effects of artificial contraception--an increase in ambivalence and anxiety as well as freedom and choice--and argues that the massive popular response of Catholics to artificial contraception is based upon a failure to recognize the subtly ambiguous character of artificial contraception. Moreover, in the light of the religious value Catholicism places upon marriage as a sacramental reality, the author ...
