Merton & Blake, Revisited, Michael W. Higgins Dec 2018

Merton & Blake, Revisited, Michael W. Higgins

Michael W. Higgins

This December is the fiftieth anniversary of Merton’s still highly controversial death in Thailand. A recent polemic, The Martyrdom of Thomas Merton, uses the strange inconsistencies surrounding that death to paint a dark picture of CIA intrigue, monastic complicity, and elaborate cover-up by the Gethsemani authorities—presenting Merton’s death as the final execution of the ’68 triad that began with Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy. But beyond such dramatic conspiracy theories, why should we still care about Thomas Merton? Why should we still be drawn to a cloistered monk who had an affair with a nurse; to ...

Magicians, Sorcerers And Witches: Considering Pretantric, Non-Sectarian Sources Of Tantric Practices, Ronald M. Davidson Dec 2018

Magicians, Sorcerers And Witches: Considering Pretantric, Non-Sectarian Sources Of Tantric Practices, Ronald M. Davidson

Ronald M. Davidson

Most models on the origins of tantrism have been either inattentive to or dismissive of non-literate, non-sectarian ritual systems. Groups of magicians, sorcerers or witches operated in India since before the advent of tantrism and continued to perform ritual, entertainment and curative functions down to the present. There is no evidence that they were tantric in any significant way, and it is not clear that they were concerned with any of the liberation ideologies that are a hallmark of the sectarian systems, even while they had their own separate identities and specific divinities. This paper provides evidence for the durability ...

Ellen G. White Portrait, Harry S. Ahn Oct 2018

Ellen G. White Portrait, Harry S. Ahn

Harry Ahn

Prophetess, preacher, missionary, mother, and author of over one hundred original and compiled books, Ellen G. White filled her life of 87 years with selfless service to the God and Gospel she so dearly loved. While her wide travels took her not only across the United States but also through the European countries and Australia, she nevertheless found time to raise three sons together with her husband, best friend, and partner in the work of God, James White. The revelations she received in vision and related to the young Seventh-day Adventist church, together with the divinely inspired counsel she provided ...

James White Portrait, Harry S. Ahn

Harry Ahn

James White, co-founder of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and one of the first presidents of the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, began his career of over thirty years as a humble Millerite preacher, travelling from place to place on a borrowed horse with a Bible, a prophetic chart, and notes for just three sermons. His first speaking tour met with astonishing success, winning a thousand converts to the Millerite faith, and success continued to follow him as he served the church as founder of the Review and Herald and Pacific Press Publishing Associations, publisher of the Advent Review (Adventist Review ...

Nehemiah’S New Shadow: Reading And Rereading The Ezra-Nehemiah Narrative, Ched E. Spellman Sep 2018

Nehemiah’S New Shadow: Reading And Rereading The Ezra-Nehemiah Narrative, Ched E. Spellman

Ched E. Spellman, Ph.D.

Ezra-Nehemiah is sometimes interpreted as a positive portrayal of the return of Israel from exile. Ezra 1 begins with a prophetic expectation of return and restoration. However, the conclusion of the book in Nehemiah 13 emphasizes that although the people have rebuilt the temple, restored the walls, and repopulated Jerusalem, they have still failed to keep the demands of the Mosaic covenant. The sober tone of this final chapter prompts a rereading of the narrative as a whole. Rereading the book in light of the conclusion highlights a distinct pattern of tensions throughout the story. A central textual strategy of ...

The Representation Of God In First Corinthians 8-10: Understanding Paul In The Context Of Wisdom, Philo, And Josephus, Trent A. Rogers Aug 2018

The Representation Of God In First Corinthians 8-10: Understanding Paul In The Context Of Wisdom, Philo, And Josephus, Trent A. Rogers

Trent Rogers, Ph.D.

The interpretation of 1 Cor 8-10 is complicated by several factors. Scholars have noted the apparent contradictions in the text (primarily an issue within ch. 8) and also the remarkable changes in Paul's tone (primarily an issue with how 10:1-22 relates to 8:1-13 and 10:23-11:1). I argue that Paul consistently prohibits Christians from eating food sacrificed to idols; by appealing first to their obligation to love other believers and then to their obligation of exclusive faithfulness to Christ. What has largely been overlooked is the way that these arguments are made on the basis on ...

Professor Michael W. Higgins Explores The Life Of John Moriarty In "Digging Deep In Sacred Caverns"

Michael W. Higgins

Given his eccentric behaviour, hermitic life, and disregard for celebrity, it is not all that surprising that John Moriarty remains even now – more than a decade since his death in June 2007 – a darling for his cult following, an amusement for the curious, a distraction for the serious intellectual, a Celtic epiphenomenon, and one of the treasures of the RTE archives.

Moses Mendelssohn's Approach To Jewish Integration In Light Of His Reconciliation Of Traditional Judaism And Enlightenment Rationalism, Robert J. Clark Aug 2018

Moses Mendelssohn's Approach To Jewish Integration In Light Of His Reconciliation Of Traditional Judaism And Enlightenment Rationalism, Robert J. Clark

Robert Clark, Ph.D.

Prior to the eighteenth century, European Jews lived in separate communal structures at the discretion of their host countries.1 A very few found places of influence and wealth as "court Jews" and lived as aristocrats, but their acceptance in society was limited, subject to official approval, and came at a price.2 There had always been opportunities for Jews to integrate into European society, albeit not without complication, via assimilation and conversion.3 But the ability to enter the social order as Jews and find a place to belong without rejecting their heritage and religion proved elusive. The emergence ...

Publishing Tools In Sermon Studies, Robert Ellison Aug 2018

Publishing Tools In Sermon Studies, Robert Ellison

Robert Ellison

“Green.” “Gold.” “DOAJ.” “APC.” These terms – and many more – are part of the vocabulary of open access publishing, a model that is becoming increasingly prevalent with both established presses and independent journals. In this talk, Robert Ellison surveys current patterns and trends in the open access world, and discusses some of the decisions that must be made when starting a new open access journal. As a case study, he outlines the process of launching Sermon Studies, an online-only, peer-reviewed publication that has recently “gone live” at Marshall University.

Some Reflections On The Field Of Sermon Studies, Robert Ellison

Robert Ellison

Multidisciplinary endeavours with the word ‘studies’ in their names have brought like-minded scholars together for over sixty years. Those specializing in certain parts of the world, for example, can join the North American Conference on British Studies (founded in 1950), the British Association for American Studies (1955), the African Studies Association (1957), or a host of other groups. Similarly, organisations for scholars interested in specific time periods include the Society for the Promotion of Byzantine Studies (1983), the Society for Renaissance Studies (1967) and the European Network for Avant-Garde and Modernism Studies. Finally, students of politics, gender and other aspects ...

Assur Is King Of Persia: Illustrations Of The Book Of Esther In Some Nineteenth-Century Sources, Steven W. Holloway

Steven W Holloway

The marriage of archaeological referencing and picture Bibles in the nineteenth century resulted in an astonishing variety of guises worn by the court of Ahasuerus in Esther. Following the exhibition of Neo-Assyrian sculpture in the British Museum and the wide circulation of such images in various John Murray publications, British illustrators like Henry Anelay defaulted to Assyrian models for kings and rulers in the Old Testament, including the principal actors in Esther, even though authentic Achaemenid Persian art had been available for illustrative pastiche for decades. This curious adoptive choice echoed British national pride in its splendid British Museum collection ...
