The Resurrection Of Jesus: A Clinical Review Of Psychiatric Hypotheses For The Biblical Story Of Easter, Gary R. Habermas Dec 2014

The Resurrection Of Jesus: A Clinical Review Of Psychiatric Hypotheses For The Biblical Story Of Easter, Gary R. Habermas

Gary R. Habermas

Jesus’ resurrection to bodily life after death by crucifixion is foundational to orthodox Christianity. The disciples had encounters with Jesus after his crucifixion which caused them to believe he had been bodily resurrected to life again. Psychiatric hypotheses have been proposed as naturalistic explanations for his disciples’ beliefs, which include hallucinations, conversion disorder, and bereavement experiences. Since they propose hallucinatory symptoms that suggest the presence of underlying medical pathology, clinical appraisal of these hypotheses for the disciples’ encounters with the resurrected Jesus is warranted. Psychiatric hypotheses for the disciples’ belief in Jesus’ resurrection are found to be inconsistent with current ...

Foiling The Black Knight, Kelly C. Smith Dec 2014

Foiling The Black Knight, Kelly C. Smith

Kelly C Smith

Why is the academy in general, and philosophy in particular, not more involved in the fight against the creationist threat? And why, when a response is offered, is it so curiously ineffective? I argue, by using an analogy with the battle against the Black Knight from the movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail, that the difficulty lies largely in a failure to see the nature of the problem clearly. By modifying the analogy, it is possible to see both why large sections of the academy have remained unmoved and also why many of the reactions to the threat have ...

Can Intelligent Design Become Respectable, Kelly Smith

Kelly C Smith

What I want to try to do is give you a basic blueprint for respectability. If we make the assumption (and there are lots of people who would question this assumption, but I will make it for the purposes of this talk) that ID theory seriously wishes to become a respectable scientific theory, then I will tell you how to do it. If you follow my 4 simple steps to scientific respectability, you will get what you want: scientific respect, research funds, access to science classrooms, and so on, and so forth. It is actually fairly simple — all you have ...

Order In The House? The Reception Of Luther's Orders Teaching In Early Lutheran Genesis Commentaries, Mickey Mattox Dec 2014

Order In The House? The Reception Of Luther's Orders Teaching In Early Lutheran Genesis Commentaries, Mickey Mattox

Mickey L Mattox

The notion that human life at Creation had been set into a series of ordered relationships was central for the Lutheran reformers’ understanding of Church, home, and state. Expositors developed this imaginative theological construct primarily out of the narrative of the Creation and Fall, and they used it as a framework for understanding the obligations of humankind in relation to the Creator, as well as for homes and societies rightly ordered. The Christian home, however, did double duty, serving as an archetype not only of life rightly ordered (law) but also of the love and freedom given by Christ in ...

An Exposition Of Genesis, Johannes Oecolampadius, Mickey Mattox Dec 2014

An Exposition Of Genesis, Johannes Oecolampadius, Mickey Mattox

Mickey L Mattox

The success of the Protestant Reformation depended vitally upon the industry, piety, and learning of the first generation of Reformers. Among them, none worked or prayed or studied harder than Iohannes Oecolampadius, the great Reformer of Basel, Switzerland. This volume presents his lectures on Genesis 1-3, translated for the first time into English. These lectures take us back to the heady early days of the Reformation, where we find Oecolampadius skillfully negotiating the dense thicket of perplexing questions that had long surrounded the story of Creation and Fall, boldly reforming the ancient traditions of Christian exegesis by the application of ...

Transparency In Financial Markets And Institutions: A Catholic Social Thought Perspective, Bridget Lyons, Lucjan T. Orlowski Nov 2014

Transparency In Financial Markets And Institutions: A Catholic Social Thought Perspective, Bridget Lyons, Lucjan T. Orlowski

Lucjan T. Orlowski

We argue that transparency, or information disclosure by public and private sector institutions should be viewed as an important component of the Catholic Social Thought process. A higher degree of transparency by a single institution denotes revealing a greater magnitude of truthful information that leads to optimization of actions by other individuals and institutions, thus ultimately, to maximization of social welfare. Based on the precepts of Catholic Social Thought, more detailed and unbiased information allows individuals to make more truthful observations of reality that subsequently rationalize their judgment and actions. This is particularly relevant for financial markets and institutions that ...

Is Public Reason Counterproductive?, Eduardo Peñalver Nov 2014

Is Public Reason Counterproductive?, Eduardo Peñalver

Eduardo M. Peñalver

The debate over the proper role of religion in public life has raged on for decades and shows little signs of slowing down. Proponents of restrictive accounts of public reason have proceeded under the assumption that religious and deep moral disagreement constitutes a threat to social stability that must be tamed. In contrast to this "scary story" linking pluralism with the threat of instability, there exists within political theory a competing, "happy story" according to which pluralism affirmatively contributes to stability by creating incentives for groups to moderate their demands. Whether the scary story or happy story is a more ...

Unaffiliated Lay Vincentians: Trends And Opportunities For The Vincentian Family, Scott Kelley, Jessica Werner

Scott Kelley

In 2013, DePaul’s Office of Mission & Values (OMV) commissioned a survey of “unaffiliated lay Vincentians,” young adults, ages 18-35, who have had a formative experience in the Vincentian mission either as a student or post-graduate volunteer at a Vincentian institution. Working with Dr. Jessica Werner, Director of Lay Vincentian Missionaries, Dr. Scott Kelley, assistant vice president for Vincentian Scholarship for OMV, shares the survey’s results and what they mean for the larger Vincentian Family.
