Monotheism And Tolerance: Recovering A Religion Of Reason, Robert Erlewine Dec 2009

Monotheism And Tolerance: Recovering A Religion Of Reason, Robert Erlewine

Robert Erlewine

Why are religious tolerance and pluralism so difficult to achieve? Why is the often violent fundamentalist backlash against them so potent? Robert Erlewine looks to a new religion of reason for answers to these questions. Drawing on Enlightenment writers Moses Mendelssohn, Immanuel Kant, and Hermann Cohen, who placed Christianity and Judaism in tension with tolerance and pluralism, Erlewine finds a way to break the impasse, soften hostilities, and establish equal relationships with the Other. Erlewine's recovery of a religion of reason stands in contrast both to secularist critics of religion who reject religion for the sake of reason and ...

Religiosidad, Democracia, Laicismo, Antonio-Carlos Pereira-Menaut Dec 2009

Religiosidad, Democracia, Laicismo, Antonio-Carlos Pereira-Menaut

Antonio-Carlos Pereira-Menaut

In the discussion on religion-democracy-secularism, several Catholic authors make some mistakes. Firstly, they accept a historical «mea culpa» that is not always well founded, and they accept to discuss on State’s terms. They also indulge in «Eurocentrism», and undervalue certain factors in the conflict: the State’s «vocation of Church», Sovereignty, the displacement of politics towards what is personal and the loss of public validity of three important visions: the specific nature of politics, the basic agreement, and the general legal mass of rules and fundamental principles.

The Validity Of The Growing Disciples In Community Model Among Adolescents In Seventh-Day Adventist Schools In North America, Kathleen Beagles Nov 2009

The Validity Of The Growing Disciples In Community Model Among Adolescents In Seventh-Day Adventist Schools In North America, Kathleen Beagles

Kathleen Beagles

There is little empirical research about discipleship, and particularly discipleship and adolescents. An understanding of Christian discipleship might, however, be an antidote for a growing trend toward consumer mentality in the church, the effect of post-Christian culture on the home, and the departure of the younger generations from active church life, which are all seen as problems that face Western Christianity. The purpose of this study was to examine the validity of a discipleship model—Growing Disciples in Community.

The Greatest Constructivist Educator Ever: The Pedagogy Of Jesus Christ In The Gospel Of Matthew In The Context Of The 5es, William H. Robertson Nov 2009

The Greatest Constructivist Educator Ever: The Pedagogy Of Jesus Christ In The Gospel Of Matthew In The Context Of The 5es, William H. Robertson

William H. Robertson

The gospel message of Jesus Christ found in the New Testament requires the learner to believe in God, not as a result of works, but on a foundation of faith. In order to preach the principles of the kingdom of heaven effectively in a way the people could understand, Jesus employed teaching methodologies in the Gospel of Matthew that can be framed in the 5Es of constructivism and can be an example for educators today.

Monsters And The Moral Imagination, Stephen Asma Oct 2009

Monsters And The Moral Imagination, Stephen Asma

Stephen T Asma

The article discusses the cultural interest in monsters in the 21st century. The author speculates on the reasons for the interest, citing anxiety after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the war in Iraq, or the global financial crisis of 2008-2009. He notes a conference in September 2009 at the University of Oxford entitled "Monsters and the Monstrous." Cultural uses of monsters, he notes, include scolding ourselves for failure to be inclusive, the medievals' punishment for the sin of pride, or the ancient Greeks' warnings of impending calamity. He notes that monster stories can promote the individual's thought about ...
