The Church As Counterculture, Michael Budde May 2000

The Church As Counterculture, Michael Budde

Michael Budde

The question, "What does it mean to be 'the church'?" has always been among the most controversial and of vital concern to political, economic, and ecclesial leaders alike. How it is answered influences whether Christianity will be a force for legitimating or subverting existing secular relations of power, influence, and privilege. The Church as Counterculture enters the debates on Christian identity, purpose, and organization by calling for the churches to reclaim their roles as "communities of disciples"-distinct and distinctive groups formed by the priorities and practices of Jesus-to constitute a countercultural reality and challenge to secular society and existing ...

Spiritual Quest In Hojoki And Hosshinshu And The Duality Of Art And Religion, Michele Gibney

Michele Gibney

The individual’s quest for enlightenment in Japan is a serious one. One such individual from the medieval Japanese period will be the subject of this paper. Kamo no Chomei, a recluse, poet, and priest who lived from 1155-1216 strove to attain a religious awakening of the mind during the latter half of his life. The question of whether he succeeded or not is a difficult one to answer, however, by examining two of his major works—Hojoki and Hosshinshu—the nature of Chomei’s quest should become clearer. Although I do not believe Chomei found the enlightenment he sought ...

Monastic Approaches To Medicine In The Middle Ages, Christopher Callahan Feb 2000

Monastic Approaches To Medicine In The Middle Ages, Christopher Callahan

Christopher Callahan

Nature and God are linked through the creative power of the Word, for which Hildegard coined the term viriditas or “greening power”. Viriditas is the life force which brings all of us into wholeness and into balance with Nature, and is the key to finding our way to God. In this way, Hildegard stands at the pinnacle of medieval Christian medicine. Having evolved beyond excessive reliance on the occult and perched on the cusp of a revival of scholastic medicine, she exemplifies the naturalistic bent of the best of monastic thought. Fusing what ancient medical knowledge was available with a ...

Power And Periphery: Studies Of Gender And Religion In Africa, Rosalind Hackett Dec 1999

Power And Periphery: Studies Of Gender And Religion In Africa, Rosalind Hackett

Rosalind I. J. Hackett

Considering the great cultural and religious diversity of the African continent and the dynamic role of religion at all levels of African life, Africa would seem to offer fertile ground ,for generating studies of gender and religion. However, such is not the case. In addition to the political, cultural, and academic marginalization of Africa, there are the familiar reasons adduced in other contexts--namely that several of the earlier, classic studies of African religions were conducted by European and African scholars for whom gender was not an analytical category--what Ursula King calls "sexism by omission" (King 1995: 2). This paper examines ...

The Numinous And Modernity: An Interpretation Of Rudolf Otto's Philosophy Of Religion, Todd Gooch Dec 1999

The Numinous And Modernity: An Interpretation Of Rudolf Otto's Philosophy Of Religion, Todd Gooch

Todd Gooch

The author traces the development of Rudolf Otto’s attempt to construct a normative science of religion. This should respond to concerns facing Protestant theologians in Germany at the turn of the century. Moreover, he examines the reception of Otto’s ideas after World War One. The volume contains name and subject indexes.
