The Black Presence At The World's Parliament Of Religions, 1893, Keith Naylor Dec 1995

The Black Presence At The World's Parliament Of Religions, 1893, Keith Naylor

D. Keith Naylor

Countering traditional views of the World's Parliament of Religions as primarily an event of religious pluralism, this paper examines how the African Methodist Episcopal Church transformed the Parliament into a world court of opinion regarding racial equality. Using Higginbotham's idea of the Black church as a ‘discursive, critical arena’, I show how Black religionists constructed a rhetoric of equality, challenging the themes of unity that pervaded the Parliament. I argue that in locating their challenge at the world's fair, a major event of cultural self-examination, Blacks acted out some of the most original purposes of a church ...

Blooming In The Desert, Anne Teich Dec 1995

Blooming In The Desert, Anne Teich

Anne Teich

This book provides a biographical account of the Theravada Buddhist master, the Very Venerable Taungpulu Sayadaw of Burma. In 1978, at the age of 80, Taungpulu Sayadaw left his native country for the first time and came to California, where he taught and established the West's first Burmese Buddhist temple and monastery. Revered as a saint in his lifetime and after his death in 1986, Taungpulu Sayadaw's calm, joyful presence, forged in a lifetime's dedication to the austere spiritual path of the Theravada forest tradition, was a beacon of hope to Burmese people in exile and a ...

The Mosque: History, Architectural Development & Regional Diversity, Ed. By Martin Frishman And Hasan-Uddin Khan (Review), Roberta Dougherty Dec 1995

The Mosque: History, Architectural Development & Regional Diversity, Ed. By Martin Frishman And Hasan-Uddin Khan (Review), Roberta Dougherty

Roberta L. Dougherty

Readers who are already familiar with mosque architecture in Central Asia, Iran, or the Arab homelands are sure to learn something new from this book. Those wishing a detailed comparative presentation of the regional differences in mosque architecture--from the rammed-earth mosques of West Africa with their striking vertical buttresses perhaps deriving from pagan African ancestral pillars, to the well-known stalactite muqarnas of Andalusian, North African, and Levantine mosques, to the pagoda-like roofs and manicured gardens of mosques in China, to the Hindu-inspired centralized vertical thrust of Southeast Asian mosques--will find this title a useful resource.
