A Survey Of Gay/Lesbian Catholics Concerning Attitudes Toward Sexual Orientation And Religious Beliefs, Thomas W. O'Brien Jul 1991

A Survey Of Gay/Lesbian Catholics Concerning Attitudes Toward Sexual Orientation And Religious Beliefs, Thomas W. O'Brien

Thomas W O'Brien

The negative assessment of lesbian/gay relationships in Catholic circles is most often based on scanty information gathered from folklore, the commercial media, and a narrow, literal reading of Biblical texts. Assumptions are made about the personal adjustment of individual gay/lesbian persons and the quality of their relationships without recourse to actual lived experience. This survey of 263 gay/lesbian Catholics and 20 controls was designed to receive direct feedback from lesbian/gay persons concerning their religious attitudes, personal adjustment, and relational quality. The results contradict many preconceptions, and a remarkable similarity is demonstrated between the gay/lesbian responses ...

The Comedic Function Of The Enumerations Of Officials And Instruments In Daniel 3, Hector Avalos Jan 1991

The Comedic Function Of The Enumerations Of Officials And Instruments In Daniel 3, Hector Avalos

Hector Avalos

IN WILLIAM LANGLAND'S fourteenth-century tale of Piers the Ploughman, the description of the marriage of Lady Fee, a personification of corruption, includes the following list of guests: "men of every status, high and low: knights and clerics, jurors and summoners, sheriffs with their clerks, beadles and bailiffs, business brokers and purveyors, victuallers and advocates."J Langland punctuates this lengthy list by adding that he could not "number the throng that ran at Fee's heels."2 The list, of course, is not meant simply to supply a good descriptive narrative. The enumeration is a sarcastic commentary on the comprehensive ...

What Ship Goes There: The Flood Narratives In The Gilgamesh Epic And Genesis Considered In Light Of Ancient Near Eastern Temple Ideology, Steven W. Holloway

Steven W Holloway

Despite efforts made to understand the Mesopotamian and Genesis flood narratives as cosmogonies, the architecture and religious symbolism of the arks remain a scholarly embarrassment. Comparisons of the design of the arks described in Gilgamesh XI and Genesis 6—8 traditionally have focused on the sharp incompatibility of their dimensions. I shall attempt to demonstrate by a close

Messianic Themes In Portuguese And Brazilian Literature In The Sixteenth And Seventeenth Centuries, Carole A. Myscofski

Carole Myscofski

Between 1819 and 1897, three messianic movements were launched in the north- eastern interior region of Brazil, in the states of Pernambuco and Bahia, drawing to their enclaves not only hundreds of backlanders but also extensive military repression. The three unsuccessful sects prophesied the imminence of the Last Days, of the End of the World in cosmic terms, and had as their extraordinary emissary of the final catastrophe neither Jesus nor any Christian saint but rather a short-lived but long-lamented Portuguese monarch of the sixteenth century. The nostalgia for Rei Dom Sebastião was, however, not limited to a cluster of ...
