„Zurück Zu Schleiermacher! Und Von Schleiermacher Aus Vorwärts!“ Georg Wobbermin And The Legacy Of Schleiermacher In Weimar Liberal Protestantism, Brent A. R. Hege

Brent A. R. Hege

As dialectical theology rose to prominence in the years following World War I, the new theologians sought to distance themselves from liberalism in a number of ways, an important one being a rejection of Schleiermacher’s methods and conclusions. In reading the history of Weimar-era theology as it has been written in the twentieth century one would be forgiven for assuming that Schleiermacher found no defenders during this time, as liberal theology quietly faded into the twilight. However, a closer examination of this period reveals a different story. The last generation of liberal theologians consistently appealed to Schleiermacher for support ...

Breaking Bad As Theological Text: A Process-Theological Reflection On Theodicy And Anthropodicy, Brent Hege

Brent A. R. Hege

The recently-wrapped AMC megabit Breaking Bad (set and filmed in Albuquerque) has challenged viewers to reevaluate their assumptions about good and evil, freedom and determinism, and the possibility of redemption. Walter White, the protagonist and postmodern anti-hero, is a mild-mannered high school chemistry teacher and family man who is diagnosed with terminal cancer. To provide for his family after his death, he enters the crystal meth underworld, eventually securing for himself a vast underground empire and a new persona as "Heisenberg." Over the course of five seasons White makes a series of choices that implicate him in deception, betrayal, and ...

Welcome To Bedrock: A Liberal Theologian Visits The Creation Museum, Brent Hege

Brent A. R. Hege

The Creation Museum, established by the conservative Christian organization "Answers in Genesis," purports to offer visitors a realistic and historically and scientifically accurate representation of the origins of life on Earth according to the Book of Genesis. By employing all of the features of modern museums of science and history and elaborate cutting-edge technology and special effects, the Creation Museum intends to convince visitors of the scientific validity of a hyperliteral reading of Genesis's creation accounts and, therefore, of the truth of their particular version of Christianity. In my paper I will reflect on my visit to the Creation ...

A Reforming Tradition Struggles With Change: The Evangelical Lutheran Church In America’S Historic Vote On Lgbt Ordination, One Year Later, Brent A. R. Hege

Brent A. R. Hege

For progressives in the ELCA, the wider Christian church and society at large, the vote was a thrilling victory after decades of struggle and setback. For conservatives, the vote signaled a decisive break with scripture and tradition and called the orthodoxy and orthopraxy of the this denomination into question. Almost one year later, we can take a step back to consider what happened in Minneapolis and to map some of the trajectories of this historic vote.
