The Resurrection Of Jesus: A Clinical Review Of Psychiatric Hypotheses For The Biblical Story Of Easter, Gary R. Habermas Dec 2014

The Resurrection Of Jesus: A Clinical Review Of Psychiatric Hypotheses For The Biblical Story Of Easter, Gary R. Habermas

Gary R. Habermas

Jesus’ resurrection to bodily life after death by crucifixion is foundational to orthodox Christianity. The disciples had encounters with Jesus after his crucifixion which caused them to believe he had been bodily resurrected to life again. Psychiatric hypotheses have been proposed as naturalistic explanations for his disciples’ beliefs, which include hallucinations, conversion disorder, and bereavement experiences. Since they propose hallucinatory symptoms that suggest the presence of underlying medical pathology, clinical appraisal of these hypotheses for the disciples’ encounters with the resurrected Jesus is warranted. Psychiatric hypotheses for the disciples’ belief in Jesus’ resurrection are found to be inconsistent with current ...

Foiling The Black Knight, Kelly C. Smith Dec 2014

Foiling The Black Knight, Kelly C. Smith

Kelly C Smith

Why is the academy in general, and philosophy in particular, not more involved in the fight against the creationist threat? And why, when a response is offered, is it so curiously ineffective? I argue, by using an analogy with the battle against the Black Knight from the movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail, that the difficulty lies largely in a failure to see the nature of the problem clearly. By modifying the analogy, it is possible to see both why large sections of the academy have remained unmoved and also why many of the reactions to the threat have ...

This study compared the efficacy of a manualized group treatment protocol on God image and attachment to God to a manualized Christian Bible study and a waiting list control group in a sample of undergraduate college students attending a Christian college. Thirty students were randomly assigned to one of the treatment conditions and assessed with measures of God attachment, God image, religious coping, and general spiritual outcomes. It was hypothesized that significant God image and attachment change would occur among the God image treatment group participants only. Making Room: A Place For Children's Spirituality In The Christian Church, Heather Ingersoll Oct 2014

Making Room: A Place For Children's Spirituality In The Christian Church, Heather Ingersoll

Heather Ingersoll

A relatively uncharted territory until recently, the concept of children as innate spiritual beings has garnered significant attention among scholars over the past two decades. The more that is learned about children’s spirituality the more apparent it becomes that the Christian church in the United States generally fails to provide sufficient space for children to explore, develop, and share their spirituality. This potentially leads children to suppress or disconnect from their spirituality in later years and also deprives a Christian community of the ability to learn and grow from children’s unique experiences of God and spirituality. This paper ...

Paul's View Of The Church Ets 2014.Pdf, Leo Raines Percer

Leo Raines Percer

With the rise of the internet and electronic communications, the world has witnessed a rise in so-called “on-line communities.”  These on-line communities represent a loosely connected family of sorts where people interact with each other via electronic resources.  As a result of these things, many Christian communities have attempted to build a “church community” in an on-line environment.  Paul describes the church as a community in most of his letters, and in some letters he even describes the church as a body and a bride.  The language Paul uses is very relational and almost physical.  How would Paul respond to ...

Hospitality As Companionship And Justice, Laura Stivers Oct 2014

Hospitality As Companionship And Justice, Laura Stivers

Laura Stivers

My work has not been in direct ministry to people who are homeless but instead I have been involved in writing, teaching, and organizing to do the work of justice. . .to end homelessness as this homeless poet asks us to do. Organizing for justice through structural change (e.g. affordable housing, good work for all, universal healthcare, no wars, etc.) is of paramount importance. It is our fight. The problem of homelessness is less about the individuals who find themselves without a place to sleep and more about our collective identity as a people and a society. Organizing for justice ...

Antiracist Education: From Theory To Practice By Julie Kailin., Laura Stivers

Laura Stivers

Although I help students to see the complexity of racism and how their actions or inactions can further individual and institutional racism, this book pushed me to think more deeply about the racism in my own university and classes and how I can more intentionally pursue antiracist education. The book is written for primary and secondary education, but it is useful for college and seminary professors in religion as well.
