Triptych In Tears: Towards A Theology Of Redemption. Facing Sexual Abuse Within The Church, Glenn J. Morrison Jan 2020

Triptych In Tears: Towards A Theology Of Redemption. Facing Sexual Abuse Within The Church, Glenn J. Morrison

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

The article seeks to develop a pastoral theological response to sexual abuse within the Church. The response introduces the importance of the emotivity or affectivity of tears as the basis for a theology of redemption. To this end, three key biblical passages, Ps. 137, Matt 2:16-18 and John 11:1-44, speaking directly of tears or weeping, will help to form as it were, A Triptych. The aim here is to help to ‘think otherwise’ to become close to the Father’s heart (Jn 1:18), the newness and nearness of the Kingdom of God, and hence to encounter the ...

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

Background: International guidance for advance care planning (ACP) supports the integration of spiritual and religious aspects of care within the planning process. Religious leaders’ perspectives could improve how ACP programs respect patients’ faith backgrounds. This study aimed to examine: (i) how religious leaders understand and consider ACP and its implications, including (ii) how religion affects followers’ approaches to end-of-life care and ACP, and (iii) their implications for healthcare.

Methods: Interview transcripts from a primary qualitative study conducted with religious leaders to inform an ACP website, ACPTalk, were used as data in this study. ACPTalk aims to assist health professionals conduct ...

'Weakness, And Wounded And Troubled Love' In Amoris Laetitia: Pope Francis As Pastor, Thomas Ryan Jan 2017

'Weakness, And Wounded And Troubled Love' In Amoris Laetitia: Pope Francis As Pastor, Thomas Ryan

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

‘Accompanying, Discerning and Integrating Weakness’ is the ‘contested’ chapter 8 of Pope Francis’s postsynodal allocution ‘The Joy of Love’ (Amoris Laetitia). This collegial document can be approached from various perspectives, for example, in its historical and theological context; in its significance for moral theology; in its reception within local churches. The aim here is pastoral, namely, to clarify the chapter’s content and, specifically, its implications for the faithful and those engaged in pastoral ministry.

A Theology Of Feasting: Encountering The Kingdom Of God, G Morrison Jan 2017

A Theology Of Feasting: Encountering The Kingdom Of God, G Morrison

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

Central to a theology of feasting is the nearness and newness of the Kingdom of God. Engaging Levinas’ philosophy, this article develops a theology of feasting to portray the intimacy of encountering the risen Christ’s word of goodness, mercy and joy in the poor one’s face. Such intimacy relates the joy of being children of God, seeking to know the Father’s forgiveness and prophetic call not to forget ‘the least of these who are members of my family’ (Mat 25:40), namely, “the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame” (Lk 14:3), chosen by God ...

'When She Calls For Help' - Domestic Violence In Christian Families, L Westenberg Jan 2017

'When She Calls For Help' - Domestic Violence In Christian Families, L Westenberg

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

Violence in relationships is a common experience for a significant number of women. VicHealth (Australia) has noted that one of the underlying and contributing factors towards violence against women is their environment, citing ‘faith-based institutions’ such as churches as one such environment for many women. Indeed, international research shows that the language of religion is often used by women to explain abuse. Additionally, abused Christian women are more likely to remain in or return to unsafe relationships, citing religious beliefs to support avoidance of ‘family break-ups’ despite abuse. In contrast, however, churches can address domestic violence within a context of ...

Wisdom As Loving Knowledge In Dag Hammarskjold's Markings, Thomas Ryan Jan 2017

Wisdom As Loving Knowledge In Dag Hammarskjold's Markings, Thomas Ryan

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

The inter-relationship of the affective and the cognitive is an issue in the spiritual and moral fields of the Christian tradition. Drawing on the analogical use of the ‘spiritual senses’ together with insights from virtue ethics, this article investigates wisdom as loving knowledge in Dag Hammarskjöld’s Markings. The article has five stages: first, the various forms of love present in Hammarskjöld’s reflections are outlined; second, after a brief explanation of affective/cognitive aspect of the spiritual senses, it probes a representative text in Marking on the process of knowing and loving God; third, it analyses key passages in ...

St Therese Of Lisieux's Perception Of God, J Schneider

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

(i) The way her writing can inform us of how we come to view God

(ii) In this light, what might we learn from Thérèse today?

It is probably true to say that, at the level of 'popular' faith, Thérèse of Lisieux has been adopted by many as their 'go-to' person-in heaven. As such, she has been experienced as someone who bestowed special, even miraculous, favours—something she gave permission for in her lifetime. However, here we're not talking about a beyond-death Thérèse we might have personally experienced. The Thérèse I will speak about is from research, specifically with ...

Jesus - 'Our Wisest And Dearest Friend': Aquinas And Moral Transformation, Thomas Ryan Jan 2016

Jesus - 'Our Wisest And Dearest Friend': Aquinas And Moral Transformation, Thomas Ryan

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

This article joins others in assessing the role of Christ in the moral theology of Thomas Aquinas. It investigates one specific phrase in the Summa Theologiae in four stages. First, there are some foundational considerations of Aquinas’s overall framework. Second, I examine the evidence supporting Aquinas’s original description of Jesus as our ‘dearest friend’ and as further disclosed in the Tertia Pars, specifically in His Passion and in His role as Teacher. Third, this leads to a consideration of Jesus as ‘wisest’ as the Incarnate Word and Wisdom. Fourth, I probe this sapiential aspect further in terms of ...

'Yes!' And 'Thou' In Dag Hammarskjold's "Markings": A Theological Investigation, T Ryan Jan 2016

'Yes!' And 'Thou' In Dag Hammarskjold's "Markings": A Theological Investigation, T Ryan

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

Hammarskjöld’s Markings combines the spiritual, theological and ethical. This article engages with the journal in four stages. First, it briefly introduces the text (context, translation and overall purpose). Second, I explore Hammarskjöld’s faith guided by two words: ‘Yes’- to explore key ideas on union, discipleship, the ‘beyond,’ religious language, his use of the medieval mystics and the influence of the apophatic and kataphatic traditions on his consciousness. Third, under ‘Thou,’ follows an examination of this word’s role in Hammarskjöld’s religious awareness and, also, of the journal’s convergences with other authors, such as Bernard Haring and ...

Jewish And Christian Perspectives On Chosen-Ness, J Schneider Jan 2016

Jewish And Christian Perspectives On Chosen-Ness, J Schneider

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

Jewish and Christian dialogue, I suspect, is more than simply defending the other's right to express their particular religious tradition; we are also concerned with understanding what it means to be religious in the other's tradition. This means developing sensitivity to our different senses of shared notions.

One notion we share is 'chosen-ness'. The sense of being chosen by God—an experience in the biblical narratives of ancestral kinship, of kings, leaders, prophets appointed by God, or in Christian texts, of Mary among women, Peter among the apostles, Paul appointed by Jesus—can be uncomfortable. Sometimes it is ...

Incarnating The Feminine Genius In The Contemporary Catholic Church, L Westenberg Jan 2016

Incarnating The Feminine Genius In The Contemporary Catholic Church, L Westenberg

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

As Western society has seemingly become apathetic about faith and religion, many within the Catholic Church have simultaneously become concerned with issues of relevance. The call from Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis has been to examine the fruits of the Second Vatican Council, with a view to evangelisation, emphasising the role of the Church in modern society. Responses to this call on a pastoral level, however, often fail to recognise the specific needs of women in society and in the Church today. The goal of this article is to examine practical movements in the contemporary Church that are instigated ...

Practical Theology From The Heart: Becoming Children Of God, G Morrison Jan 2016

Practical Theology From The Heart: Becoming Children Of God, G Morrison

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

Practical theology, like worn shoes, carries the memories of our daily lives, giving opportunities for the movement of God's word to resonate from the heart (Matt 18:35). In this article, I want to suggest that the markings we make on the road to 'the paradise of God' (Rev 2:7) reflect opportunities and capacities for growth to become children of God. This entails a difficult or even a vexing adventure of faith. For 'the children of your Father in heaven' are challenged to find meaning and truth through encounters and memories like loving 'your enemies' or praying 'for ...

Spiritual Growth Through Authentic Worship, L Pang Jan 2016

Spiritual Growth Through Authentic Worship, L Pang

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

Frequent sharing of the Eucharist guarantees God's grace for us.’ While this slogan which appears at a recent First Holy Communion for children has merit, it calls for deeper reflection. The truth is that years of mechanistic responses at Mass can set in place a spiritual lethargy that drains an enthusiasm to link the Eucharist to life in the real world.

Of particular interest for his paper is the Sign of Peace and Presentation of Gifts. In Sacramentum Caritatis, Pope Benedict XVI notes the great value of the Sign of Peace especially in a world fraught with fear and ...
