Catholic Deacons And The Sacrament Of The Anointing Of The Sick, Michael J. Eash Apr 2020

Catholic Deacons And The Sacrament Of The Anointing Of The Sick, Michael J. Eash

Master of Theological Studies Honors Theses

An examination to discern if Roman Catholic deacons should be allowed to sacramentally anoint the sick. This includes a review of the current rite of Anointing of the Sick through is development. The Catholic diaconate is examined in historical context with a special focus on the revised diaconate after 1967. Through these investigations it is apparent that there is cause for dialog within the Church considering current pastoral realities in the United States. The paper concludes that deacons should have the faculty to anoint the sick as ordinary ministers when it is celebrated as a separate liturgical rite.

On The (Male) Fringes: How Early Religious Women Remain “Subordinate” In World History Textbooks, Erica M. Southworth

Faculty Creative and Scholarly Works

Second Wave feminist researchers identified male-dominated curriculum formats in late twentieth century curriculum materials. This study builds off their work and advances the conversation of women’s inclusion by current United States secondary world history textbook content via a feminist lens to determine the extent of women’s agency in the accounts of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The purpose was to determine if textbooks portrayed these patriarchal religions as exclusively male, thereby presenting inaccurate portrayals of the religions and the agents involved, which directly violates NCSS Standards. This study used critical discourse analysis to identify patterns of female marginalization and ...

Will You Come And Follow Me? Engaging High School Youth In Discipleship, Maria Scherer

Master of Theological Studies Honors Theses

Jesus’s command: “go make disciples,” resonates during this historically liminal time. Discipleship is not new. Intentional discipleship is “ever ancient,” found in Hebrew and Christian Scriptures and “ever new,” as programs adjust to “make disciples,” of today’s high school youth. Today’s teens are different from previous generations. By understanding their cognitive, social, moral, and faith developments a comprehensive picture can be formed. Identifying the forces enticing teens from discipleship is crucial in forming followers of Christ. This paper explores the importance of relationship, accompaniment and evangelization using Koinonia, Kerygma, Worship and Diakonia experiences, to provide a wholistic ...

A Spiritual Directory Of The Order Of Prémontré, Theodore J. Antry, O.Praem Translator, Emmanuel Gisquière, O.Praem

Monasticon and Other Premonstratensian Texts

In 1910 the Vatican’s Congregation of Bishops and Religious issued norms for the revision of the statutes/constitutions, primarily for small, newly founded communities of consecrated religious. The norms stated that in these texts there were to be no references to Sacred Scripture or ascetical writers, and that they only include references to canonical norms.

Section by section, the Order of Prémontré’s new Statuta were approved by successive General Chapters until 1937 when Abbot General Noots took a different approach which adhered more closely to the Vatican’s 1910 norms. Thus the statutes of 1947 lacked all spiritual ...

German Romantic and Other Influences

Matthew Roydon (1580-1622), Elizabethan poet and friend of Sidney’s. In 1593, Roydon published his elegy for Sidney: “Astrophel: An Elegy, or Friend’s Passion, for His Astrophill.” MacDonald quotes lines 103-106. “The lineaments of Gospell bookes,” suggests that Sidney’s face exhibited a spirituality of a kind found in the four gospels of the New Testament
