Turning “Bad Jews Into Worse Christians”: Hermann Adler And The London Society For Promoting Christianity Amongst The Jews, Robert Ellison Oct 2019

Turning “Bad Jews Into Worse Christians”: Hermann Adler And The London Society For Promoting Christianity Amongst The Jews, Robert Ellison

Robert Ellison

This paper explores how sermons contributed to Jewish-Christian relations in Victorian England. I begin with a rhetorical analysis of sermons preached on behalf of the London Society for Promoting Christianity among the Jews, the largest and best known missionary organization of its kind. I then examine a collection of sermons in which Hermann Adler, then rabbi of London’s Bayswater Synagogue and later Chief Rabbi of the British Empire, pushes back against their efforts, offering the “true explanations” of passages which, in his view, had been improperly employed by Christian preachers. Finally, I trace a kind of “feedback loop” in ...

On Epistemology Of Missiological Research, Petr Činčala Aug 2019

On Epistemology Of Missiological Research, Petr Činčala

Petr Činčala

"In this article I addressed the nature of missiology and missiological research. Missiology is like a dynamic river that can “flow” with any academic discipline examining human behavior “to expand missiological theory and applications and to extend the mission Dei” (Elliston 2011:112). Theological research as a stand-alone research method may or may not serve missiological purposes; however, missiology and theology are related disciplines. This same rational does not apply to the social sciences and missiology. Missiology can benefit enormously from a social science approach to research but may be paralyzed by utilizing social science research as a whole package."

African Christian Leadership: Realities, Opportunities, And Impact, David K. Penno Aug 2019

African Christian Leadership: Realities, Opportunities, And Impact, David K. Penno

David Penno

"African Christian Leadership is a well-organized, well-written report on some very significant research about leaders and the practice of leadership in the African church. The methodology allowed the researcher to hear from a broad spectrum of African Christians. One criticism of the study could be that a sample of church leaders and members in majority Muslim countries of North Africa were not included in the study, but this might be understandable due to the already vast scope of the project. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in leadership in the Christian context, and especially as practiced ...

Short-Term Missions: Developing An Effective And Sustainable Program In The Local Church, Matthew Alan Trill

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Increasing numbers of churches, schools, and Christian ministries are sending out teams to foreign countries for brief trips. Without proper oversight these may become little more than sightseeing excursions. This project seeks to develop a ministry for the New Testament Baptist Church in Largo, Florida that will support its missionaries’ objectives and provide significant spiritual experiences for participants. The project focuses on determining proper objectives, training team members, raising funds, arranging logistical matters, and implementing components into a successful outreach. Research includes a thorough examination of biblical principles, contemporary resources on the topic, and at least sixty surveys from experienced ...

Constructing A Theology Of Relational Life Through The Themes Of Creation, Incarnation, And Re-Creation As An Alternative To Current Categories Of Religions, Andrew Tompkins Jun 2019

Constructing A Theology Of Relational Life Through The Themes Of Creation, Incarnation, And Re-Creation As An Alternative To Current Categories Of Religions, Andrew Tompkins

Andrew Tompkins

This dissertation argues that current categories of religions are overly reliant on Western Enlightenment-based presuppositions and academic thinking that creates barriers in understanding God’s desire for all people to have abundant life. Many theologians and missiologists utilize these inherited categories without first subjecting them to the biblical canon. As a result, the theological and missiological discourse on religions is often grounded in extra-biblical presuppositions rooted primarily in an overly high view of human reason that do not accurately portray a biblical approach to relational life. These presuppositions do not accurately portray a biblical approach to relational life. I, therefore ...

Multiplying Apostolic Mission Movements In Cambodia And Asia: A Strategy For Equipping And Empowering Leaders Through Training And Coaching, Garth D. Gustafson Feb 2019

Multiplying Apostolic Mission Movements In Cambodia And Asia: A Strategy For Equipping And Empowering Leaders Through Training And Coaching, Garth D. Gustafson

Doctor of Ministry Projects

The goal of this study was to explore the current reality of the potential of the Church in Asia. This project will argue that what was once a mission field could, in this generation become one of the greatest mission forces in history. This thesis was tested in Cambodia, as over the last two decades church growth has been exponential. In recent years the ministry of Youth With A Mission in Battambang, Cambodia has trained and sent Khmer as long-term missionaries within Cambodia and to some of the most unreached nations.

Through an examination of Scripture, this study identifies character ...

Implementing A Servant Evangelism Initiative In The Community Around Pioneer Memorial Church, Rodlie Ortiz Feb 2019

Implementing A Servant Evangelism Initiative In The Community Around Pioneer Memorial Church, Rodlie Ortiz

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Pioneer Memorial Church is a Seventh-day Adventist congregation on the campus of Andrews University. Andrews holds the distinction of being the second most diverse university in America. This is significant because Andrews University sits in the heart of Berrien Springs, Michigan. Berrien Springs is a primarily White, agriculturally based, two-traffic-light town Because the local community and Andrews are so different in nature and ethnicity, there has been division between both contexts.

The purpose of this project is to build a bridge into the community by implementing a servant evangelism initiative. The word evangelism is often associated with the act of ...
